Isn't the added power requirement going to shorten your operating time?

Subject: [FT817] Re: Ant. Tuners for backpack?
Well, in anticipation of the FT-817 i went and bought the Z-11 from
LDG. It is a automatic tuner, coax only, with lo-z and hi-z L-
network. It runs on 9 - 16 V and has a low amp requirement.
I have already modified it with a 4:1 built-in balun and stand-off
posts for wire and twinlead. It is very compact, almost the same size
of 817 (5" wide, 1,5" high and 9,5" deep (with connectors and
controls)), and with it's black enclosure it would look good with the
817.
I have looked at the schematics of the 817 and found the Z-11
possibly could be powered from the AUX (CAT/LINEAR) connector, pin 1
13.8V and pin 3 GND depending of the drain one can draw from there.
The Z-11 draws around 10 mA in standby/sleep mode and up to 400 mA
for max 2 sec in tune mode. It is usually faster when tuning and my
measurements show that it peaks arund 200 mA.
The next project is using a surplus military collapsible whip (7 17"
sections and flexible foot for a total length of 10') from the AN/PRC-
77 series, a metal or plywood box with slip-on connectors, where both
the 817 and Z-11 could slip into, and fasihion the whole contraption
as a manpack, either for inclusion in an existing rucksack or with
some kind of harness (proberly both).
Now the only thing I need to get on with the project is a 817... ;-)
Will keep the group posted with details as it comes along.
