Re: Sotabeams speech compressor vs The One Big Punch by W4RT
Hi David,
?
I have both the One Big Punch (20 years old now) and the SOTAbeams speech processor (labeled DYC-8x7).? The OBP is a real speech processor, not just passive components.? They both work.? I think the SOTAbeams gives a louder signal, from on-air testing with remote SDR's.? (There were some other mods floating around the internet to change components in the stock mic to implement a passive high-pass filter, but this is something separate.)
?
The OBP suffers from RF getting into the speech processor in the mic, causing a feedback squeal.? Care needs to be taken to isolate the mic as much as possible, but this is hard in the field when the antenna is often feet from the mic.
?
The SOTAbeams processor seems to be less susceptible to RF back into the unit.? But it has happened.? I tried using a flat cable to connect the mic to the processor to reduce bulk in the pack, and it was particularly susceptible to RF back into the unit.? The stock curly microphone cord has better isolation.? ??
?
Care needs to be taken with both units in reducing the SSB mic gain setting on the FT-817/818.? My setting is around 30.? I listened to myself on remote SDR's to find the right setting.??
?
When it is all set up, I get the effect of 1-2 s-units of gain from the SOTAbeams processor.? I concluded this by using 0.5 Watts with the processor on, compared to 5 Watts with the processor ff and mic gain returned to 100.? 0.5W with speech processor was still louder on a remote SDR than 5W without processing and mic gain set to 100.? Greater than 10 dB of effective talk power.?

Re: Sotabeams speech compressor vs The One Big Punch by W4RT
开云体育I wonder of anyone has “The One Big Punch” adaptation done to their mic by W4RT when he was modding the 817? ?If so it would be neat to see the difference between?“The One Big Punch” and the Sotabeams processor. ?I think “The One Big Punch” is just a capacitor or a few other parts to knock off the wasted frequencies in the audio but for the price the Sotabeams processor is probably better for one reason or the other. ?I know the W4RT (BHI I think) audio processor that I had i stalled does make a difference in the receiver but that was the most expensive upgrade W4RT did back in the day. ?Any thoughts on the transmission audio between the two transmitter processors?? Re: Sotabeams speech compressor
Hi Martin,?
The update isn't firmware or software related, it was simply me reporting on the received audio reports from other stations and my own observations of it's use. Its a great piece of kit especially if running the 817 barefoot.
You can get the compressor from sotabeams as Robert said, and yes they do sell out when in stock. If you buy one you won't regret it.

Re: Sotabeams speech compressor
This will be the last update from me on the speech compressor. Had several good chats this afternoon with airfields on the air stations and a portable station in Ireland. Tried with compressor on and off, all stations preferred the compressor on, they reported better, stronger audio and increased S meter readings. Typically I am heard first call with no-one asking for a repeat of callsign.
One station had me at 59+ and couldn't believe I was using a 817, he was particularly impressed with the sotabeams compressor, although he had heard of it he had never heard one on air until now.
On a pep meter the compressor gives increased wattage. I have mic gain set to give 3 bars of ALC with compressor on and both pots set halfway, only regret is not buying one earlier, it has transformed ssb on the 817.

Re: FT-817ND power takes time to reach 5 Watts after powering on
You might try doing the pa install tuning. There are 2 pots on the pa board where using inline Amp meter with pa an?adjust each pot for proper current. Must do separate for each pot.?

Re: FT-817ND power takes time to reach 5 Watts after powering on
Hi Mike!
This is definitely a sign that something in the radio is getting worn out and likely will need to be replaced soon.? Based solely on the observations you've had, my initial suspect is a capacitor that is wearing out.? There was a pretty big problem with them between the late 90's and about 2007.? You can google "The capacitor plague" to read up more on that. ?
If you have someone in your local club who can do some basic radio repair, it would be probably be worth it to have them take a look.? Replacing capacitors is a pretty straightforward process but can be a bit difficult in a radio this small just because everything is close together.? However a package of capacitors will run you <$30 and maybe a couple hours of your time compared to buying a new radio.
?
Good luck with it!

FT-817ND power takes time to reach 5 Watts after powering on
Hello,
?
My FT-817ND (bought new in 2004) takes some time to reach 5 Watts after first powering on.?
?
Example: apply 12V external supply, power on rig, key down on 28.060 MHz CW.? Power is initially about 3.5-4 Watts, and current draw is about 1.6-1.7 Amps.? Keep keying down.? Current draw drifts up and power output drifts up.? After about 5-10 seconds, the rig reaches 5 Watts output at 2 Amps.? Thereafter, the rig puts out 5 Watts as long as the rig is kept powered on.
?
I observe this more pronounced on a few bands, e.g. 30m and 10m.?
?
If I give the rig 13.8V, the time to reach the 5 Watts output after power-on is shorter.?
?
If I turn the rig on, leave it on in receive mode for a several minutes, and then key down on 28.060 CW, I get the 5 Watts at 2 Amps immediately.?
?
Is this normal behavior for this rig, or is it a sign that something is aging and should be replaced??

Re: FT-818 Odd SWR Readings on 70 cm
Re: SWR. My FT817ND was purchased new in early 2006. The SWR readings don't match this table: On mine there are no SWR bars on 145 MHz, but 2 to 3 bars on 435 MHz with a dummy load good to over 1GHz. The rear and front connectors don't make much difference. Note SWR due to higher apparent resistance rather than lower is less of a risk, the 2:1 could be 100 Ohms or 25 Ohms, but 25 Ohms is higher current. Most SWR meters don't tell you which it is. Also an open circuit on the end of a transmission line will look like a short circuit at specific lengths and frequencies. I have a 50 Ohm load that can be connected as "through load" and with a 50 Ohm on that and an electrically short cable you then have 100 Ohms = 2:1 (which is safe) to check your SWR meter(s). The service menu settings don't calibrate the SWR metering. |
