Re: Windcamp Battery

Thanks Kevin for the reply. I am trying to find someone that just sells the battery alone. Not the charger or battery plate. I already have that. Just need a smaller battery than the 8 cell one I have.

Ok Martin the battery is a 8 cell 2000mAH. Size is 4 inches x 2 1/2 inches. Takes up the entire compartment. No way will the Wind camp panel I ordered will fit.

Re: Iambic mode - A or B?

Thank you for the quick reply, Bruno. I've used a Vibroplex semi-automatic key and a Lionel (I still have that) so I'm used to dits with the thumb and dahs with the index finger. In this case, though, I'm using the left hand and still have dits?with the thumb, dahs with the finger but of course they are on the opposite sides. I was told by my mentor (50+ years ago) that using a fully automatic key would ruin my fist, so I'm using the other hand.?

Rightly or wrongly, I've mounted my tiny stainless twin-paddle key on a box with knee straps. The box contains a PIC, a lithium cell and a 2.4GHz transmitter to make it cordless. I wonder whether this makes iambic keying more difficult because the key can twist slightly on the straps. I've tried turning the box around so the paddles are pointing away from me and my hand rests on the box to steady it, but the box has a sharp edge which needs to be padded.?

I might try a single paddle and forgo the iambic mode, or make? a sideswiper. I've never used one of those.

Thanks again and 73,

John G4EDX

Hi John

It’s a matter of preference, i would risk saying that Iambic B is the only mode on the FT817 and also risk saying that it is the most common mode to be using a paddle. The main difference is how it handles “squeeze” that is maintaining the dash paddle held down and insert a dit on the right timing.?
?
Also if you are new to paddle use, i would also recommend dash on the right dit on the left. You can learn either way and there is no right way but it’s what most people use.
?
hope that helped.

Windcamp Battery

I recently ordered a Wind Camp Battery plate. Seems the battery I have is too large for the plate.?? Dumb question, is the Wind Camp Battery that much small than the battery I? have? I assume so?

Iambic mode - A or B?

As a long-term straight key operator trying to get to grips with iambic keying I would like to know whether the 817's internal keyer is mode A or mode B. Whichever it is, there isn't a choice, and I'm convinced that I would find the other mode easier!?

Any advice, please?

Re: Digirig APRS

That sounds like a really bad design. The cells do not stay matched and how do you match capacity? Any proper charger for multiple series LiIon cells needs a controller than measures each cell.

Re: Power bank questions

Or search for "aili 18650 powerbank".
This is the kind that satisfies the requirements. I haven't tested it for EMI with my FT-817 yet. Using it as an extra power for laptops.
It can charge from a 19V laptop power adapter with 5.5x2.1mm barrel tip and can output 5/6/9/12/15/19V selectable by mechanical switches on its 5.5x2.1mm socket. Has a USB-A output for the phone as well.
The best part for field operation is that you can replace 18650 cells with ones pre-charged at home, so essentially "unlimited" capacity.

Digirig APRS

Hello,

Does anyone use the Digirig for APRS? How does it work?

Re: PAT board and FT818

Hi Dick
Thanks for help.
I did some search over the internet, but didn't get across this page. One thing that didn't came across my mind yesterday, was that you can calculate new values by multiplying lpf component values with freq(a)/freq(b). Thus the multiplier in this case is 50/75=0.67
The page you linked verifies that i am on the ballpark with calculations.

Re: Power bank questions

I have a 12V 24 aH (13.8V 24,000 maH) LiFePo as the largest practical size pack. I have two sets of Anderson Power Poles for 12V gear and two 12V to USB-C plug 5V 3A step-down inverters (for raspberry Pi + QHD screen or whatever). I got it to power my FTdx10, but of course it's fine for my FT817ND (and optionally PAs). It's charged by 2 x "100 W" solar panels easy enough to put in a small car. I mean to get a car charger and mains charger. The MPPT controller is a Victron (cheap model with no BT, so I had to interface the TTL serial to change it from Lead Acid to LiFePO4.)

Lives in a carry-case with shoulder strap along with LED meters.

The LiFePO4 has 3000+ full cycles rating (down to 10%) and a 1/3rd of weight of Lead Acid. Safer than LiPoly/LiIon. The cheap Lead Acid Gel / SLA for emergency backup (UPS, lights, Alarms) don't even quote cycles. The more expensive ones (more expensive now than LiFePO4) are about 100 to 200 cycles, but only if not fully discharged. The 200 cycles is about 70% usage.

Re: Power bank questions

Also, note - the power bank you linked to claims 20,000 mA, but at what voltage? I suspect at 3.7 volts, the voltage of the internal cells - 20,000 mA at 3.7 volts will be closer to 5,000 - 6,000 mA at 12 volts, maybe less. That may or may not meet your needs - that is something to consider when choosing power source.

?I’d stick with a 12 volt lifepo4 battery and use converters to power/charge 5 volt usb devices. I recently added the Windcamp battery kit?designed for the 817/818, it’s about $75. Also 3 18650 batteries in a 3 battery case work well and can be recharged with a 4 cell charger. Don’t risk messing with alternative power sources.?
