Re: Measuring the output power

Bernard,

The website you provided does not work. Could it be a typo? The call is not good on QRZ.? Maybe the website is no longer around?

You can build a simple RF probe but you need to calibrate it.? A simple SWR meter does not measure power over a wide range of frequencies.? If possible, borrow a Bird 43 wattmeter from a local ham.

You can use that device to calibrate the power of your measurement equipment.

Check out .? He sells some great kits and gives excellent service.

You can also build own watt meter using a Arduino UNO, a power tap and dummy load

See my rather crude video that I produced 4 years ago to see a demo of a talking watt meter.

Re: my ft 817 flashes unstable

It sounds like you need to look at the radios reference frequency/tcxo if it has it fitted,
Or the std module,

thanks for you reply
i have everything on display but the bands flashing dont work? only when i put voltage up to 14 volts some bands about 4 only become stable?

Re: my ft 817 flashes unstable

Flashes?? Does it indicate anything on the display?? HSWR, or something else?? Do you have a battery installed?

Multimeters rarely will measure above a couple of hundred Hz.? You could use an RF probe and a dummy load.? I bought a Surecom power meter on Amazon a few months back for UHF and VHF.? They also make one for HF at about $65 on Amazon. ?
You will still need a dummy load.

And with a good dummy load.

?

Or use a terminating wattmeter such as the Bird 6104 Which has scales down to 2W FSD.

The best way is with an accurate wattmeter. I have a Bird 43 with an assortment of slugs, including 5 and 10 watt slugs for HF, VHF and UHF bands.

Hello ,
Have you encountered this problem? my ft 817 worked very well for 2 years in digital mode, now it flashes on all bands if I increase the voltage towards 14 volts it stabilizes on a few bands.
thanks for your help

Re: Measuring the output power

And don't forget to check the rf output on the 6 bands mentioned in the service manual in case a golden screwdriver has been in the alignment menus, there are 24 outputs in total that can be altered.

Re: Measuring the output power

Measure the peak-to-peak voltage across a dummy load with an oscilloscope.

Re: Measuring the output power

A swr meter aint gonna give you a power reading is it, its gonna give you a swr reading, unless you get something like a cross needle power/swr meter or the like, as for the mulitmeter, err i dont think so.

Re: Power question - Battery related

Hi, I personally use 4 Li-Ion cells and I get more than enough capacity to tackle mountain outings in QRP. with an excellent power/weight ratio. Since 4 cells produce a higher voltage than the FT-817's nominal voltage, I use a small voltage regulator to accommodate this. Obviously the Li-Ion batteries are placed in an external container equipped with a small digital voltmeter. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Steve. Sounds like the way to go.

Re: Power question - Battery related

Kevin, The WindCamp Battery is Way OVERPRICED and one of the (3) 3000 Mah Cells will "Fail"even in conservative Use, I know I found it the Hard $ Way.
Real 3000 Mah NickelMetalHidride Packs are available at way lower COST (sometimes in a 3 Pack deal) then the ONE WindCamp unit and can be easily retrofitted by Using the wires from the OLD pack, and you can still Use The FT-817 as the "Charger" source Yes It Will Take A Bit Longer, and you can build a small slide switch into the battery cover. ? ? ? ?
Best Regards.

Re: Power question - Battery related

Well it turned out to be the battery. It’s been working well for a while (10 months or so) but didn’t have enough poot for the radio to recognize it. I ended up putting my much larger 12ah that I use for my 891 on it and it came up fine. I also have brand new power pole connectors thanks to my buddy.
Problem solved.

Re: eBay filters

Thanks John. I don’t have much use for the CW filters as I am an SSB op. Haven't used CW since my test haha. I think I’m going to skip the filter entirely. Doesn’t seem to make enough difference to spend the money on it.

Power question - Battery related

Hi all. I am experiencing a weird situation, I apologize ahead of time as I am a newbie to the 817.?

When I plug in an external battery the radio is not seeing it. I have a car power adaptor which it sees perfectly but for some reason it isn’t seeing the lifepo4 battery. I have checked the battery voltage and it is fine, I have a power pole adaptor on the radio but it is fine (car power cable is Anderson).?

I have checked the battery cable and it is showing both continuity and voltage on the Anderson connector going to the radio, nothing seems to be loose in the connection and I did check the contacts on both sides for corrosion and everything seems to be fine. I’m suspecting the power pole connectors even though they seem fine but I don’t have any to replace these with at the moment ?

Are there any settings that I am missing? ?It was seeing the connection yesterday just fine but not today. The onboard yaesu battery is suspect right now, I think it’s probably very weak due to age and I am planning on replacing it with the windcamp battery but would really like to know what I am doing wrong.?

thanks and 73
