Hi, I personally use 4 Li-Ion cells and I get more than enough capacity to tackle mountain outings in QRP. with an excellent power/weight ratio. Since 4 cells produce a higher voltage than the FT-817's nominal voltage, I use a small voltage regulator to accommodate this. Obviously the Li-Ion batteries are placed in an external container equipped with a small digital voltmeter. I hope this helps.
