Re: Battery charging - completion not auto but based on fixed time period?

开云体育

I do not believe the FT-817/818 "kills" it's battery packs, I've never heard complaints about that and I never saw FT-817/818 owners stream into radio retailers to buy replacement packs for their radios.

I must have had my 817 for about eight years and am still on the original battery. I don't use it very much.

Re: NiMH Battery - does the 817 continue to draw current when powered down?

martinbradford2001

Like most modern devices, the 817 has a simple press button for power on and off rather than a mechanical switch - that kind of arrangement will always have some residual current drain while off - usually measured in micro-amps rather than milli-amps. My 817 spent at least a year without being charged and the batteries still hold a useful amount of charge - can't tell you what capacity is left, but it is certainly not destroyed. That said, I use AA NiMH batteries in the dry cell case, not a composite battery pack.

No. Same charging method reading the manual.

Does the 817 continue to draw current when powered down?

If so, any idea how many mAH?

I guess if the NiMH battery is left connected and the 817 is not used for 6 months, the NiMH's will be depleted to zero with some cells going into reverse...so the end result will be a failed battery pack?

Re: Battery charging - completion not auto but based on fixed time period?

You could leave the radio on until the battery is discharged, then charge it for the full 8 hours. It won't discharge completely, of course, which is bad for Ni-Cd batteries.

Battery charging - completion not auto but based on fixed time period?

Does the FT-817 battery pack normally get hot when charging?

I think I read that the charge current is 200mAH? Is this correct?

It appears that you need to select different time periods ie 6 hours, 8 hours etc.

The official time period for a 1400mAh NiMH pack is 8 hours ie 8 * 200 = 1600 but "energy conversion" is not 100% perfect.

What happens if you don't know how fully charged the battery pack is? A full 8 hours might cook the batteries?

As the battery pack ages, the capacity will probably decline. So again a fixed 8 hr charge might cook the batteries?

Re: NiMH battery - loose inside radio - is there an official "spacer"?

I have just given mine a shake and nothing is moving inside. That said, I had previously wrapped a layer of black electrical insulating tape around the battery pack to create a "handle" to pull on to withdraw the pack, and the slight build up may be securing it. While I was at it, I wrapped a short length of the same tape over the sharp edge of the lower case aperture. (Another poor manufacturing "decision"- when I worked in aerospace manufacturing, it was mandatory across the board that every edge and corner had to be "RSE'd"- Remove Sharp Edges)

Re: NiMH Battery - 2 positive and 2 negative wires - why?

That chimes with my thinking. I read that those connectors are rated at 1 Amp per conductor, so they double up to meet the FT81x's demand. Looking at the chosen connector that seems entirely plausible to me. I guess it was all down to engineering choices driven by restrictions on available space? The fifth wire is only there to sense a (mid pack?) voltage, and thus confirm to the radio that dry cells are not installed before commencing the NiMh charge cycle.

Re: 5 MHz wideband mod - is there some official Yaesu software.

How old is your 817? It needs to be early manufacture, pre2010 at a guess, for the software mod to work. If it is younger than that you will need a magnifying glass and a fine tipped soldering iron. The American FCC weren't happy with the way Yaesu's original 8xx series rigs could be so easily tampered with and forced the change.

Subject: [ft817] 5 MHz wideband mod - is there some official Yaesu software.

My FT-817 is 19 years old and did not come with 5 MHz TX.

I am aware of a software mod which I prefer rather than a hardware mod.

Is there official Yaesu software for doing the mod?

If not, what is the best/easiest 3rd party software?

Thanks

Re: Ceramic filters failure - is this a problem with the FT-817?

The early models of the big brothers(857/897) are the ones where the filters usually failed, I don't think those in the 817s caused any problems.

Subject: [ft817] Ceramic filters failure - is this a problem with the FT-817?

I have read about the failure of Toko ceramic filter in various Yaesu radios.

I have a Yaesu VX-7 and a VX-2200 commercial radio where the ceramic filters failed.

I have recently acquired an FT-817 which dates from 2003/4. The ceramic filters seem to be OK.

I wonder if anybody has an FT-817 where the ceramic filters have failed and whether any failure is linked to a certain manufacturing date?

Thanks

Mine is an early ND and the software fix worked fine on it

I never heard of it working on ND models but It won't hurt anything to try Widebander. It either works or it doesn't.?

Many people tried the software fix on the ND models before giving up and accepting the only option was changing the solder blobs.

Re: New but not new: PA sat on the shelf and the PA is NOT working.

I have replaced the PA board in my FT817 (old 2004) twice, on my 3rd PA.

I ordered the board from Yaesu, was about $65, came with instructions for installing it, is rather easy, do need a current meter to set the bias currents.

Hi Martin,

?

Yes, it is purely to spread the load, probably mainly over the connector pins as they are very small, and the radio can draw close to 2A on Tx.

The NiMH battery pack has 2 positive and 2 negative wires. Is this to spread the load given the thin wiring or are the two positive and 2 negative wires connected to different locations on the 817 main PCB?

Maybe that one of the couples?is temperature sensing. Are they similar wires or different in size?

The "widebander" software is in the files section of this group. If yours is the right model version.
