Re: Recommendations for a replacement battery pack for F-817ND

I don't see a big problem with not using the built in charger. Just one different connection is all. Advancing technology never guarantees compatibility. And in this case yaesu chose to stay behind the times in the battery department. A deeper bottom cover by a mere ~18 mm would have allowed the use of a? 18650 pack moved indoors instead of underneath the radio. An alternative could be for yaesu to offer such a thing as an option or as an upgrade kit. If I was still working I'd have whipped one up pronto just to prove a point.

I have a 20 year old ft817 with original finals and still works great. I gave up on internal batteries years ago. I use bioenno 3ah or 4.5 ah 12v with a PowerPole adapter on the bottom of the radio.? Best set up to date. I use same batteries on multiple rigs and have not had any issues with bioenno batteries. KR6AI? Kevin.?

$60 for an 8 pack, 1560 mAh/each, recharge via usb octopus.

You pay a steep premium to maintain AA form-factor.

No, you can't charge them using the internal charger.

I use 2 5200 ma RC car batteries for the FT-817.? Works very well and lasts quite a while till finally going below the required voltage of the unit.? Fairly light weight and small.

High SWR on VHF / UHF

Steve R

I have a RFC 2-23 RF concepts amp that I wanted to use for 2 Meters with the 817. I have high MAX SWR on 2 Meters on the rig SWR meter.. Thinking it was the amp, I connected straight to my antennas, (2 Meter yagi and a X50 Vertical) both have max SWR on 2 and 440.

I have power out it appears. I tried going directly from the rig thinking might be the Z100 tuner. Still the same. I took my SWR Meter and checked the VHF antennas and they are both around 1:5 to 1.

When I connect to HF, 6 Meters all the way down SWR is good. Faulty SWR meter on 817 or do I have an issue with the rig? The PO meter changes levels when I switch power levels, and ALC seems to adjust fine. I am puzzled. Any ideas?

I've had good luck with Windcamp batteries. Only complaint is they are a bit tight fitting in battery compartment. I've also seen some lightweight lithium batteries on Amazon. A bit large perhaps for SOTA hikes (no "summits" on Cape Cod) but should be good for sea level here. 73, Rich W1GBB

For a budget purchase the tried and true 12 v 7 ah sla is hard to beat at $20 - $25. A 9 pack of 18650 cells will fit nicely in the radio footprint. 3 banks of 3 cells in parallel, each bank in series for a range of 9 to 12 volts over the pack discharge curve is a nice fit for the 817 operating profile. Ah ratings for 18650 cells are all over the place as are prices, and some ratings are outright lies.?
? ?Ive been happily using an SLA on my nd almost since I got it in 2004. I gave up on internal batteries almost from the start being as anemic as they are.

Re: Pros and Cons for keeping my FT 817ND

Joe -

My wife is NOT a hand-quilter. She uses machines to cut (AccuQuilt), sew (BabyLock and Janome) and quilt (a BabyLock mid-arm Tiara--fortunately not a long-arm yet). She describes herself as more of a "piecer", as she loves to assemble the quilts, and is less fond of the actual quilting. Of course, her use of machines has meant that we've spent more on her hobby in the past few years than on mine.

And I can assure you that there are a lot more in the Championship than hand-quilters. She may not be in the Final Four, but she's ranked somewhere in the brackets!

Re: Pros and Cons for keeping my FT 817ND

I had a KX3 and sold that, I still have an FT-817ND. The price difference meant I could achieve my next purchase more easily by selling the KX3.
My main gripe with the KX3 with the poor speaker volume, I like to remain unencumbered by headphones where possible on a summit. I could never understand why Elecraft hadn't addressed the issue, it must be a very easy fix.

So a pro for the FT-817 has to be the great speaker and ample volume. The sound that sometimes comes out that little speaker is nothing short than amazing at times.
I have an ICOM 705 now - a truly amazing rig. However, on a recent trip to Austria, knowing that I would potentially be operating in the mountains and harsh conditions I took the FT-817.

Regards, Mark.
