Re: JT 65 or JT9

Andy, I have used the handy little CP2102 boards to build programming cables for Baofeng HTs.
?
I was wondering if the CP2102 could be used for a FT-817 CAT Cable!
?
If you have time, please advise:
?
? How many connections to the CP2102 board (Only needed 3 for the Baofeng's) for the FT-817?
?
? Does the CP2102 cable provide only programming via Chirp etc, or can the CP2102 be used to construct a full CAT control cable?
?
? Can you provide any wiring details?
?
Thank you very much!

No.? First, the 818 is only 6 watts, not 10 watts.? For myself, the 6-watt output of the 818 was a big step backward.? What is a 1-watt increase in output power worth on the air?? Perhaps ? of an S-unit?? From S-5.00 to S-5.25?? Could anyone really detect that?? But what does it do for you when on battery power?? A 20% decrease in battery life is what it does.? The only thing I see good out of a 1-watt increase is perhaps more drive to an amplifier.? Even then, there are better radios for high power.? But to get the 6-watts level, you gave up the 0.5 watt level.? This was perfect for driving transverters.

?

If you are going to go for a new radio, have a look at the ICOM IC-705.? I love my FT-817ND.? I have two.? But if I needed a new radio, I think the IC-705 would be picked over an 818.

Good luck finding the parts, the FT-817 IMHO is worthy of repairing.

Re: Repairing the VR-UNIT of a FT-817ND

Group, got the FT-817ND unit repaired, and did my first VHF qso to a local repeater. All functions are fine (~1.7A tx on VHF). I am missing a few screws (previous owner had no idea of types of screws) and need to get some foam padding for the new battery cover, but otherwise all is fine. The front AF knob wasn’t shipped by accident by Yaesu but they are doing so and then it will be complete, and due for a nice re-paint job. I even got a programmable switched PSU (china made,) to provide 2.5~3A limited power to the rig, which takes in 20-40VDC and outputs 13.8V.

?

Do any mobile operators have comments on using switched mode power converters / supplies with this rig? Or are you all on DC battery all the time.

?

BTW, I would like to ask, what’s a good low-cost remote control software/hardware for a laptop based control head? Bluetooth? Serial? ?I’ll be doing comms from my home lab and exploring some digital modes/new communication modes and need to stop adding USB ports!

Just the fact that the serial number begins with 8N indicates that it was manufactured in December 2008 which was well after the ND started being produced so it is an ND.

Yes, I first thought I had the FT-817 original and was locating parts using the service manual for that, and then a few days later I was inspecting the final module PA transistors and it hit me, this is the FT-817ND – huh, a welcome discovery indeed. So I was able to find the FT-817ND service manual which is more or less the same, (with the same mistakes) but? additional sections.

?

I agree with others who say the label on the new radios should have read FT-817ND. Perhaps the FCC filing requirements were too onerous for the new batch, or that the original FCC filing for FT-817 covered the 60m band coverage? Who knows.

?

Can anyone tell me the observed max current draw at full Tx power on DC input for the FT-817ND? I am expecting a bench linear power supply shortly, and need to make cables and set the current limit.

On the other hand, it just struck me that the ham can make up an interface (cheap) to the FT-817 from his / her laptop and continue to use the radio … so no need to go deep into hardware just yet. The radio should still be functional and perhaps the LCD screen is partially functional?

?

Waiting to hear an update.

Hmmm,

?

The Yaesu part numbers have commercial equivalents, I wonder who is the manufacturer (typ. S. Asia) as I can’t seem to locate it through google? I did a search on the mfr part number DU3L1AF005A from the service manuals.

FT-817/FT-817ND ?DS4001 LCD Unit – DU3L1AF005A – Q7000291

?

If a manufacturer could be identified, perhaps the original poster would be lucky in calling them from his QTH and asking for a sample / repair single order qty. I think it may be a japan/china/Taiwan source, but need to know more designators/icons on the LCD panel. Does anyone have a broken FT-817 to inspect?

I have a problem with a FT817nd which the frequency display module cracked on me, I made the mistake of packing it inside a suitcase as a check-in and when pulled it out I found the screen was cracked.

?

I contacted Yaesu and they insisted?I needed to replace 2 items which if combined was around $600 as my son mentioned for that price would be like buying a new radio.

?

Anyone know where I can get this item its been at the repair shop for nearly a year due to the covid19 situation.

Hi, again,

If the whole front panel is damaged, show us what it looks like, maybe it's not so bad.
