Re: At least one MP-1 which is not so hot.

I have said it before and it's worth reiterating...the 817 is
good,
but
let's not pretend it enables us to go handheld HF on a five inch
rubber
duck. It doesn't, what it does do is enable us to take radio
where
we
couldn't before. But the laws of AC physics hven't changed to
accommodate
Yaesu.
Yes - the laws of physics - it isn't just a good idea - it is the
LAW!!!

You'd be surprised how the laws of physics bend under the laws of
supply and demand, and marketing people who simply don't know what's
impossible.

Say you went back in time 10 years and suggested one antenna covering
50, 144, 440, and one thousand two hundred MEGAYCLES in one shot.
Impossible? No, it's sitting on top of my Icom T-81. Or a mobile
antenna performing from 7 to 450 MHz? Impossible! Or a rubber duck
covering 80, 10 and 2m. Psycho...

Do they work well? Perhaps not. But they do function.

What was my point again?

Hello,

I think it's already here.. It's "Bluetooth".
The GUI or UI is appliance/OS dependant.

I'm pretty sure it's already been looked at by the

Well, I certainly envy those who have one of the quiet ones. I bought
mine before I had the 817 and never paid it much attention as I was
using it to power a scanner. I can move it around, and place my hand in
different spots to get some quieting but as soon as I remove my hand,
the noise comes back.

Ok, Here's a concept (with tongue firmly in cheek):

Require the radio manufactures to build-in a 2.4Ghz wireless
transceiver in each radio, with a standard GUI for all radios. Then
we just need one of those nifty wireless Part 15 pc-cards for our
palmtops & BINGO! Instant control! Bypass audio connex for
digimodes! Oh, heck, let's just get rid of the radio's front panel
entirely!

Oops, isn't that almost the Kenwood TS-2000???

USB & FireWire are here to stay. USB-2 is coming fast. Someday,
most PCs will NOT have legacy ports. As a part-time network admin, I
long for the day. Most hams who use PCs run into RFI problems at one
point or another. We already know how to handle it.

Re: Radio Shack switching 3 amp power supply

I wonder if grounding has anything to do with it? I found grounding
the radio affected the pickup of hash. If the ground pin of the mains
socket is also a good RF ground, that may do the same job. In which
case it will depend on the socket the PSU is plugged in to, not the
PSU itslef.

How is it possible that one Jaguar XJ-6 is a dream to own & drive and
another one spends all its days in the shop? How is it possible that
one IC-706 is a piece of junk and another is the "best rig in the
world?" It's called production quality control. Some manufacturers
have it; obviously, whoever produces this supply for RS doesn't. It
took Yaesu a while to figure out how to make the '100 right, and it
looks as if it might be somewhat the same with the '817 (my noise
blanker simply doesn't exist, and I can't hear anything w/in 25 kHz
of 7.240).

It turns buying a switching Power supply for the FT-817 into a crap
shoot.
Yup, at least as far as the RS supply is concerned. Suggest you take
the rig with you & test it in the store on 20M receive. I got a
supply for a compaq laptop at Dayton for $10 & couldn't be happier.
Compact, no hash, and dead-flat 15.0V, absolutely no ripple.

You can always try shielding the PS better, and/or opening it up &
checking for loose solder joints, loose screws, poor grounding, etc.
But that kinda loses the point of *buying* the thing in the first
place, doesn't it? You might also try a small gel-cell & a simple
charger, if you absolutely can't find anything that's quiet enough.

Good luck finding one you like!

I've been following this forum for quite some time and am now in the "pre-
purchase phase" for the FT817. If any of you are from the Wisconsin area (or
Chicago, for that matter) are there any good swaps coming up where one can get
a good price (such as what was seen at Dayton) on the FT817? Barring that, is
there a good, reputable retailer who has a price that'll beat AES in-store of
$770?

I'd also be interested in a private purchase, but I've heard that the warranty
is quite restrictive; only the initial purchaser can get any work done under
warranty (and in a retail purchase, one needs to give their name and callsign
to complete the purchase). Yes? Or would the reliability of the radios be such
that I need not worry about this?

Also-having not been a active ham for over 15 years, and having followed the
comments here, I'l like to know more about the whip antennas that have been
bandied about here. I'm hoping to use a whip as a pedestrian mobile, but
for "hom" use I'm just going to stick with simple dipoles for
12M/15M/17M/20M/40M until I can get a good HF vertical.
