Manuals and drawings dowloadable?

Lars Myrthu Rasmussen \(OZ1HMN\)

Hi

In the process at deciding which rig to buy, FT100D or FT817, i have found
op. manuals and schematics of the Ft817 in the egroup for FT817.
Do these items exist for the FT100D in downloadable form somewhere?

best regards Lars

THANK YOU THANK YOU BARRY. Too bad the install instructions on page
74 don't mention that. All is well now.

Thanks again / 73

Re: CAT CTCSS programming info & Cloning Process

Bob,

Thanks for posting the info on the CTCSS Tones.

From your posts I gather that you are producing FT Basic
at cost/a loss to yourself. And are doing it to further
the 817 community.

Would you be willing to share what you have found out about
the cloning process so that as a group we can tackle the
Palm and Linux interfaces to the radio?

I am currently working with another individual to develop a
LGPL'ed Linux/C++ cloning and CAT class interface to the 817.

Neat riser stand for FT817

I got my FT817 at Dayton and finally put it on the air yesterday
(6/2). Anyway, the rig sitting flat against a table just doesn't
work for me.....too hard to see the display and get at the buttons.

I was at ACE Hardware today and saw a 4 inch paint roller with a
matching size tray. If you turn the tray over, cut off the back half
plus remove the bubble or hump in the back you wind up with a nice
black, heavy vinyl, riser stand for the FT817. It is about 1.25
inches in the back and 1.75 inches in the front. The width is
perfect at about 5.25 inches where the rig sits and 6 inches at the
base where it meets the desk. I finshed off the cut edges with my
dremel tool and it looks pretty good but I think I will spray mine
with black enamel. The open tray cavity under the FT817 fits the
neat little yellow FT817 book from VE3AYR or Palm Paddles, etc.

Also, if you turn the finished tray over the 817 fits right inside of
it. This will be handy for carrying both inside of another bag or
pouch. I will use the Yaesu plastic bag or a bubble wrap bag on the
817 first though. The tray would add some protection for the rig
while traveling.

If interested the tray roller I purchased from ACE Hardware is called
the Speed Roller kit and has a UPC label code of 44359 00500. I'm
sure most paint trays for 4 in. rollers would be very similar.

Just thought I'd share for those interested.

I have never heard of
putting batteries in parallel as a problem. Could you elaborate please. I
don't know why this would be a bad idea.
Hi all,...

I don't see a problem in using multi pack in parallel; The PROBLEM is
trying to charge them in parallel!

Re: CAT-Interface circuit plan wanted!

In the files section, the schematics folder.
I built the CAT/Clone cable portion of the 817cat.gif cable
and it works for me.

I used generic "high speed switching" NPN's from Radio Shack
and picked up the resistors & DB9 there. I picked up the
mini-din from my local parts store. If you search the archive
I also listed a local store that will ship out the mini-dins.

Re: Press Waterman!!!!!!!

To bad John, I was hoping the supply Press was talking about was not a swithching supply.
I did buy a CUP36-12-1 which is the one Universal radio sells and found there was a LOT of RF hash
when using a whip antenna like the ATX. I did try several chokes and nothing helped.
Universal said in their ad "we also added a surface mount capacitor right inside the plug to reduce
RFI. " I dont see how that would help? If so I would do it in a second and be done with this hunt for
THE supply.

My kingdom for a analog 2 amp wall wart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you provide a link to a Code Warrior Web Site?

Re: Voltage vs. Power out

Keith Randino

Barry,

That is exactly what I have now. I was thinking that by taking all of my
packs and putting them in parallel I would slow the voltage drop
considerably and keep my power output higher longer. I have never heard of
putting batteries in parallel as a problem. Could you elaborate please. I
don't know why this would be a bad idea.

Thanks for the response,

Also Doug thanks for your information also. I will look over those charts.
Looks like a great site! Thanks!

I think I paid $26 for mine at R&L, which is much better than trying to
homebrew something that will be a kludge when finished...

Re: 8000 FT-817 Statistic (vertex's estimated profit)

Understand Bonnie. I think we can both agree that the guesstimates
becomes more of a SWAG as the size and diversity of the corporation
increases!

With all this continuing success of the FT-817, it will be a while
before the "Mk II" version comes out. It will be interesting to see
how the declining solar cycle will play into the decisions made by
Vertex in the next round of products. Notice that most have a life
cycle of about 5 years with them. The bottom of the cycle is about
then and QRP will be a bit more challenging. :-)

More power to them, Barry! That's the name of the game for
business.
I'm constantly amazed that the ham radio equipment niche continues
to
produce many new designs.

I was originally replying to several posts which mused about how
much
was being made from manufacturing FT-817s. My guesstimate on what's
left after the bean counters was based solely upon personal
experience
as a manufacturing engineer and corporate executive in the consumer
electronics business. Could be off by a factor of 2 or so.

Can someone tell me easily what power connector the Z11 uses?

a jump on it.

I'm not interested in $$$ -- just having fun w/my FT-817!

(I'm still trying to put together an interface cable -- don't want to
pay Yaesu the incredible $$$ for a simple cable.!)

Re: Press Waterman!!!!!!!

Hi everyone,

I have one of these and tried it with the 817 but it does seem to
generate a good amount of RF hash. Has anyone found a 2A wall wart type
transformer that works with the 817 without the hash ?

Has anyone tried the PS that Universal Radio sells for the 817

Re: 8000 FT-918 Statistic (vertex's estimated profit)

I have no idea what the point of this discussion is; however, if
Vertex is making a good profit, great for them --- they have earned
it and whatever else is yet to come.

A general rule of thumb is that the non-recurring cost to build (CTB)
should be about 20% of the retail price (or $150 in this case).
Looking at the construction of the 817, this is in the ballpark for
CTB. So that means that perhaps there is a GROSS profit of about $600
per unit. Out of this GROSS profit comes retail dealer margin,
marketing, warranty, service & support, amortized R&D, shipping,
general overhead, benefits, and so on. What is left is the NET
profit. In most large companies, this is where the accountants do
their "magic" in cost allocation. On a gross sales of $6,000,000, I
could easily believe that the books could show a net profit of from a
loss to maybe $2,000,000.

The real point here is that we should all be delighted (except maybe
folks at ICOM, Kenwood, etc.) that Vertex hit a home run with this
product. Their management will be more willing in the future to
invest in this "small segment" of their overall business. That is
good for all of us and ham radio in general.

A ballpark estimate: Vertex's profit on 8000 FT-917 radios is
around US$500,000.
