Re: Voltage vs. Power out
Hi Keith,
Beware putting battery packs in parallel! Not a good idea. Let me offer you a thought that I have put into practice. I put onto the power cord to the FT-817 the mating Molex connector to the one that the RS battery has on it. I cut the power cord to about 9" to reduce the voltage drop over the cord. I also put the same Molex connector that is on the battery pack on the output of my AC power supply. You may now use a cable clamp mounted on the groud post to keep any strain off of the power jack/plug. When I want to work using the AC supply, I just plug it into the Molex connector. If the internal battery dissipates, then I just plug in a RS pack into the external Molex connector (but just a single pack). I keep the internal battery pack and two extras in my travel kit. Hope that made sense. :-) 72 de Barry - W4WB --- In FT817@y..., krandino@s... wrote: Sorry if this is in the faq. I looked and didn't see it. Has anyonepower start to drop off? Voltage vs. Power out
Sorry if this is in the faq. I looked and didn't see it. Has anyone
checked voltage out versus power out? At what voltage does the power start to drop off? The reason I ask is I am thinking of bundling a group of 4 or 5 of the radio shack 9.6V 1600 maH battery packs together in parallel to make a field battery pack. But my latest experience with them makes me wonder if I would be better off with a 12V battery. The power out (based upon signal reports) seemed to drop off rather quickly while using the battery packs. Thanks in advance, 72, Keith N1XTK |
Re: Pictures ...
So what did you do for a ground? I've only seen pictures of the Alpha
Delta tripod, and it looks as if the only ground coupling is three pieces of metal that lay flat on the ground from the bottom of the tripod legs. Re: headsets for FT817
Hi Doug, I purchased a CT-26 (modular to 8 pin), computer headset and
located the pins for Mic/Ground/PTT. Wired up a cable to the CT-26 along with plugs for the headset and a PTT switch. Works fine and told cost after getting new plugs from RS was less then $40.00. The CT-26 is sold at AES under FT-100 Accessories but does work with the FT-817 according to Yaesu, because I asked them before I tried it. You can always get a cable with RJ45 connectors on each end and cut one off and then located the wires and hookup your headset that way also. Poll for Windows CE
Bob,
Yes, this would be an appropriate topic for a poll. Go ahead an create one using the Polls feature of this site please. I suggest that you make a post about 3 times over a week letting readers know that the poll is there to take should they desire. Re: Windows CE??
Oh well, never mind about it being a private email - and here's the
reply I sent as well!! -------------------------------------------------------------------- Believe it or not, I have just ordered the Windows CE 3.0 development pack from Microsoft. As your mail came in I was on the web looking at Developing Applications for the Pocket PC with Microsoft? eMbedded Visual Basic? 3.0!! As they say - watch this space... The downside of all this is that the equipment to run it on does not come cheap. I am already faced with finding $300.00 for some better tools in developing on the traditional Windows platform. I can't fund all this from thin air, so there may have to be - as they say - a few dollars more! Perhaps I should ask eGroup what interest there would be in a CE 3.0 version. -------------------------------------------------------------------- So, is there much interest in a Windows CE version? From the development point of view I guess it would be a lot quicker to get going than using Palm kit. Is this something suitable for a poll? Bob G4HFQ |
Re: Windows CE??
Hi Bob,
I've been using a Windows CE device running a DOS emulator as a portable controller for some time now and it works well. A dedicated CE program would be great but I think it should be at least Ver. 2.01 compatible as well as Pocket PC (ver 3.0) as the slightly older devices are quite cheap on the second hand market. 73's Vic Tuff G7PYR Tel: +44 (0) 7802 449658 |

Big rig audio
Don
The MFJ equalized mic (MFJ 299) works very well with the FT-817 and produces great audio reports. For those times when I use the little rig as a base station, a large external speaker and a good base mic make the ft-817 seem very grown-up.
If you plan on getting an MFJ 299, you'll have to either make your own cable or re-wire the enclosed MFJ cable provided for Yaesu radios. Still, it's a great mic! Don Johnson |
Re: DK9SQ 33' mast.
I just bought the MFJ mast which is 30 feet I think. It works great.
I can put 5/8 wave vert on 10-15 meters and 1/4 on 40. I am working on a G5RV. I have not seen the DK mast. It might be a bit stronger and heavy. Comments on the Outback/Outreach combination
Hi Guys (& Gals!):
I've been a member of this list almost from the start, and have been reading the comments about the Outbacker & Outreach. I have had this combination as my "portable - take anywhere" system since they first came out. I have used it at our Radio Club's Field Day site for several years first for the 6-Meter VHF station and then for the HF Digital station. I even operated a 1B station one year with it. I am not an '817 owner YET(Think I'll wait for the -D model!), but have operated some QRP on it. I LOVE THIS ANTENNA!! Although you probably wouldn't want to go take it hiking, it would work great for a weekend trip to the beach, or to the park, etc. I put Hustler Quick-Disconnects on mine, so I can also use my Perth-Plus for 6/2 meters. Yes, it is a little on the expensive side, but a well-made quality product that will perform and will last. 'Nuff said... 73 de N4ZCG |
