Re: An MP-1 that is very hot

Same here, Lynn. I have tried at least 30 different types of
commercial and homebrew HF portable and whip antennas. My antenna of
choice is now the MP-1.

Successful portable whip operation is more dependent upon the
operator than other types of antennas. It's all in how you use them
that counts. Getting the feedpoint and counterpoise up above ground
level adds 6~10dB or more.

No manufacturer is selling a better performing or more versatile
portable whip for the FT-817 at this time, as far as I know. Anyone
tried a better one?

Bonnie KQ6XA

Rules of Thumb: HF Portable Power/Antennas

Relative Scale of Approximate Power and S-Meter Signal Strength
For Various SSB Transmitting Systems at Low Takeoff Angles on 14MHz
(HF-DX)

S9: 1kW + beam = 4kW ERP
S8: 1kW + dipole = 1kW ERP
S7: 100W + beam = 400W ERP
S6: 50W + beam = 200W ERP
S6: 100W + dipole = 100W ERP
S5: 50W + high dipole = 50W ERP
S5: 12W + beam = 50W ERP
S4: 50W + low dipole = 25W ERP
S4: 12W + high dipole = 12W ERP
S3: 12W + low dipole = 3W ERP
S3: 50W + backpack whip = 12W ERP
S2: 5W + high dipole = 5W ERP
S2: 12W + backpack whip = 3W ERP
S1: 2.5W + high dipole = 2.5W ERP
S1: 5W + low dipole = 2.5W ERP
S1: 5W + backpack whip = ~1W ERP
S0: 2.5W + low dipole = ~1W ERP
S0: 2.5W + backpack whip = ~600mW ERP

NOTE: Comparison is approximate, based upon about 6dB for each S-Unit,
and starting with a kilowatt into a 6dB gain triband yagi. Low dipole
is considered to be about 3dB loss, and a loaded backpack whip is
considered to be about 6dB loss as compared to a high dipole.

An MP-1 that is very hot

Hi All
Sorry to hear of the odd problem with some MP-1's. For what it's
worth I have had nothing but great results with mine. Running the
817 both portable and mobile into this antenna I have worked most of
Europe and both coast of Canada with excellent signal reports. When
I first put the 817 in my car I was running off the internal
batteries at 2.5w and put the MP-1 on the trailer hitch with the c
clamp...by the time I walked back to the front seat there was a loud
F6 on the air calling CQ (10m). I picked up the mic thinking "fat
chance" and he came back with a 5x7 report. I drove for about 2
hours and worked a dozen or more European DX. I arrived at my
parents and took the radio and antenna in to show off the world of
minature communications. Again, with batteries and the MP1 on its
tripod with the counterpoise thrown out on the floor, my first
contact on 20m was the Azores...all this from Toronto.
It works well for me. Thanks Verne!

Well, send me an email as follows:

SUBJECT: FT817 (note: no hyphen!)

No message is nedded. Be sure your reply address is where you want
to have it sent.

I don't read these emails. My filters sort them out automaticcally.
If you don't do exactly as stated above, the old filter directs it to
the trash can!

Everyone on the "I want it emailed list" gets it sent each time I
upload a new pdf version of the FAQ. This is now about once a month
it seems.

If anyone has a good tip or knowledge appropriate to include in the
FAQ, please send it to me.

Re: At least one MP-1 which is not so hot.

Gene,

I've never heard of a whip that could compete with a long wire for
short skip (or any other propagation mode for that matter) There is
nothing magical about the MP-1. It's still just a whip, and will
perform as well as other whips it's size.

Nevertheless, it can and does work the world.

Going back to the long wire, we completed the QSO.

Needless to say, I'm a little sceptical about this antenna. This
coupled with the fact that the 817 mount doesn't have the holes

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions to offer on the performance of

WPX Contacts...

I saw Chip's comments on the success he had over the weekend with the
little rig. I can't top his record! But I did want to just mention
that I, too, enjoyed contesting last weekend with the '817.

Over a period of a little better than 10 hours, I made 60 DX (only)
contacts. All but 4 or 5 were in Europe and the remaining few were in
the Pacific (JA & VK) and South America. Three or four of the
contacts were on 10 meters or 15 meters. All the others were on 20
meters. All contacts were with a (15 ft high) 20 meter dipole and no
tuner.

I was using my new CW filter which UPS delivered only a couple of
hours before the contest began! It sure does help - especially when
coupled with the movable bandpass.

I made one contact at the end with the 1000mp just to confirm the
fact that it is easier with the "big rig". It is! But there's no
denying the special kind of fun that comes with doing it with the
little fellow.

I really appreciate how hard several of the guys worked in "breaking
their rhythm" to allow the multiple repeats it occasionally took to
make the contact. I never mentioned in any contact that the rig was
QRP. Thanks again guys!

Re: Display Flashes

Reed,

I also have noticed the display flashing when the 817 is plugged into
external supply, I am running the rig from a SLA gel cell. It also takes
several attempts of switching the rig off and on before the problem
clears. I cannot find any reference in the manual as to what it means.

I look forward to any suggestions / explainations

I use International Power Supply and no internal batteries. Power
supply is putting out 12.4 volts, I have the 12 volt one, and don't
believe the power supply was causing the problem.

I believe I read someone else had this problem, but I can't find the
message.

Any ideas what might be causing this or what to do if it happens
again? I would guess a processor reset might fix it if it happened
again. I can't find anything in the service manual or owners manual
that seems to address this problem.

Thanks,

I was surprised how well the Outbacker Outreach and Alpha Delta Tripod worked,

Re: QSLs ...

Hi Michael,

I think the more people that use elctronic QSL systems the more pressure there will be on the
ARRL / RSGB to accept them.

Here's another though, I have received a number of QSLs printed via computer and then put in the QSL
buro to me, they look no different to the ones I have received via EQSL and printed myself, so
at the end of the day, who will know ????

Just a thought !

Anyways, back to my FT817 !

Hi Group,

I just wondered if any of you are using for your
QSL cards these days ?

I've been using EQSL for a few months now and have had a great
response to my QSL requests, a lot quicker than waiting a year of two
via the buro !

I've even started getting EQSL cards from my FT817 /P operation last
weekend, now that's progress !

Hope this is of interest to some of you ...

Cheers!

The UK -- and some other countries, these days -- would benefit from

I think the idea of using a separate HT or WX receiver defeats

Also, it is correct as someone mentioned that airports have local

I know there was "buzz" at Dayton about the '817 being engineered
