I would be very surprised if the FT817 has a FAN!!!!

Re: FT-817 Cool(ing)

Hi Mike,
I doubt that there will be any fans on this rig..... It only runs 5
watts and is meant to be portable NOT a mobile radio, but one you would carry
so a fan would be not only a big draw of precious current from the batteries
but not required at all!

I guess we know who is on the cutting edge of technology. I bet they read
our comments. I hope the cooling fans on the FT-817 are quieter than the
FT-100 and D. the fans on the FT-90 are some what better and you can
custom program them. Hopefully on the 817 RX there will be no fan, just an
adequate heat sink. nothing blows worse that having a fan come on when i'm
trying to copy some weak signal. Difficult to see but looks like a fan
shrouding on the back of the rig to me. Any body have any comments or
information?

Looking at the product itself it seems to me that they are going the

Even though this time I would like to have Yaesu to listen to our
suggestions instead of costly after market mods.

Hi Cameron,
that was me! although what I said was I presumed it would go
'wideband' the same as the other 'rice boxes'! Most of them do with a simple
mod or some basic key strokes.

Does anyone have a list of mods for the FT-817 yet??? I am interested in
out-of-band TX for MARS, CAP, CB, FRS, police/fire, etc.

Thought I'd be the first to ask.

yes, it is basically a transverter. most transverters will only handle 5 watts, but most only a few mW.
Think of it as a mixer you inject your base Freq. say 144 mHz and mix it and double it and you can get just about any of the mico wave bands. SSB electronics and several others have these types of trans verters.

Another use that a friend of mine will use this new radio for is a Microwave base reference frequency.
?
Apparently, they take a very small (in power) precise signal and inject it into there homebrew multipliers and amplifiers and come out on 2.4 gig.
?
Not really too familiar with this application, but the small power and stable frequency has them all very excited.
?
(Quite a few of these microwavers are using Icom 706 and FT-100 radios, but they guys say they have way too much power for their applications.)

Ok guys, my tongue was firmly planted in cheek on that last email.
However, I'm sure someone will figure out how to get 7 watts out of it
instead of 5. Big hootie power!!!!
Also, I'm sure someone will ask "How can I hook the ft-817 up to a
linear?" :-)

I've got 4 months to save my pennies for this rig. I can't wait!
I wonder what the price will be? The FT-100 is running under $1000 US.
It would have to be cheaper, right?

Vic:
Not necessarily. If they do this rig right, they're not only packing a
lot into small radio, but also doing some considerable work to keep the
power consumption low. After all, it doesn't make a lot of sence to have a
5W portable rig that draws 1A on receive. So far I haven't seen any
preliminary specs on power consumption, but it would certainly be worth
extra bucks to me if it was pretty low. What I mean by low is anything
under 100ma on receive and down near 50ma would be real nice. Also, we
certainly don't want a heavy TX power load either. If they do it right, it
will take some work. I frankly think that this is the area where we should
focus feedback to Yaesu. I mean if I need to carry a car battery around
with me, I may as well have a 100w rig! Anyone hear anything on power load
yet?

I like the way this group is going. If the radio is even half as good, we'll
be all right. BTW, I'd like the power upped to around 100 watts, then I
could sell my FT-100 ...

Talking of which, is the '817 using up all the old FT-100 case top covers
(see photos) which were left over when the FT-100D was introduced?

What is the best price you've found on the FT-817?

How do you access the "hidden" menu?

Does anyone know how to get the LCD to have a green background?

How can I tell if my 817 has all the latest "mods?"

What is the most recent serial number?

How does it compare to the 1000MP and IC-756PRO?

Re: More Questions...

Hi Paul,
I think you may be jumping the gun a little here...... the rig hasn't
even been released in Japan yet!

What is the best price you've found on the FT-817? We think it should be
under $1,000

How do you access the "hidden" menu? What hidden menu?

Does anyone know how to get the LCD to have a green background? ?

How can I tell if my 817 has all the latest "mods?" Hold on, I think you may
have the FT-817 confused with some other rig!

What is the most recent serial number? There aren't any out there yet!

How does it compare to the 1000MP and IC-756PRO? It's a portable QRP rig!

Still think you have it confused with a larger relative!

Re: FT-817 Capabilities!

Hi Chuck (& the gang),
If YAESU are sensible they will make the 817 menu
driven to allow certain circuitry to be switched off i.e. display backlight,
speaker audio, syllabic squelch (that's tone or voice activated squelch on
HF)! all designed to keep current consumption low.
The most sensible thing they could do is subscribe to this reflector!
...... anyone want to suggest that to them! I guess the YAESU USA would hold
most sway with the manufacturer...... Just a thought!

As for the USA I have received two email from Yaesu sales and Yaesu
customer service. This is the note I received from amateur sales this
week:

Thank you for your e-mail. The FT-817 should be available in the U.S.
some
time in December '00.

Thank you.

The FT-817 is a new product that was originally only planned for the

The decision has not been made yet, but I am hopeful that we will be
