Re: Memory management software?

Many thanks to everyone!

It appears that FTBasic is the only program currently available that
will import/export the FT-817's memory data to a "user-friendly"
file format such as a .csv file. I'll have to research the "Yaesu-
native" format of the file produced by FT-817 Commander and see if I
can write a Perl script to translate it.

If I learn of anything new and interesting, I'll post it.

Thanks again! Joe KB6WIJ

MFJ/W&S/Sandpiper Aerials

The MFJ 1899 is the same as the ATX Walkabout sold by Waters
& Stanton in the UK, and both appear to be really badge-
engineered versions of the Sandpiper Plug-In.

There is also a non-telescopic version sold for mobile use as the
ATX Driveabout, which is what I have, but the Sandpiper Plug-in
come with both whips (telescopic and rigid) for only slightly more
money, so I wish I had bought that version instead! There may be
some other differences between versions sold under different
names, for example the power ratings may not be the same.

The URL for the real manufacturer is:

I have indeed broken many DX pile-ups using my FT-817 to my ATX
Driveabout whilst mobile. It takes patience, and it _is_ getting
harder as the sunspots are decliniing, but I hope to be receiving the
parts for my HF Packer linear soon!

I wouldn't expect performance using a counterpoise wire to match
what I get using the car roof as a groundplane (I use a 4-way
magmount). There again, I wouldn't advocate using the telescopic
version mobile either!

The D-104 with the ceramic or crystal elements do not produce good audio
with the new digital radios unless you can shape or equalize the output, and
it's my understanding that Astatic has discontinued the production.

I guess this post is a word of encouragement to all those 817 owners who are overly concerned about output - antennas and being heard in kilowatt alley, es[ecially when mobile.

I have just come back from 2 weeks up north travelling some 5000 kms and never failed to make scheduled contacts either on 40 or 20 metres.

Regular morning and evening scheds were arranged and on 40 metres I was still receiving reports of 5 & 8 from blokes who were running no more than dipoles at 20 feet and at distances up to 1500 km.

Each day contact was maintained with the VK travellers net on 14.116 - not once did the little rig fail to make a check in.

The 817 was run in a mobile situation using a Terlin outbacker mounted high up in the centre of the dual cab diesel - the only mod to the rig was the inclusion of the OBP in the factory supplied mike. Incidentally, I tried with the OBP on and off and the general reports supplied was that the OBP was worth two S points over the standard mike setting. I guess most manufacturers set their S meters to around 5 or 6 db per S point, so the OBP was certainly equal to a considerable gain in output power.

So, dont be concerned about going mobile with the 817 - it does the trick very well indeed.

And, for those who may be interested - the VK travellers net operates for about an hour each day commencing at 0300 UTC - it really is worth a listen if that sort of thing takes your fancy.

Happy with my 817? you betcha!

Ive got two configured as a dipole. Check www.ngunn.net
They appear to work OK although not as well as a full sized antenna of course.
I've never compared it with any other similar sized antenna.

Well--I have not seen any rave reviews on "Dave Edwards" tuners or other accessories!

All my MFJ stuff works as advertised, although I have had to do some tweaking here and there on occasion.

I see that MFJ has a couple walk about antennas for sale - one is 6m
to 80 and the others are single banders. How well do they work and
are they worth the dollars???

Re: Antennas

Rudy Marcelletti, K8SWD

I have the MFJ1899T 6-80 antenna and it works OK. You must have a counterpoise wire attached to the rig's ground lug appropriate for the band. A rule of thumb to follow with antennas--SIZE MATTERS! Bigger is better.

The MFJ-1899T antenna packs really well and is a great antenna to take along for SWL'ing or an occasional contact. I would not expect to bust any DX pile-ups with it nor would I rely on it for emergency communications, but in a pinch, it would work. This antenna (and counterpoise wire) always gets taken with my rig IF the rig is the only thing I am taking. I tried the counterpoise "kit" made of various lengths of wire and connectors--but had better luck using a 23' Sony SWL wind up antenna.

Remember, the sunspot cycle is going downhill, and this antenna does not cover the new 60 meter band.

Re: disappointment !!!! The conclusion...

Hi All,

Following the tip of W4RT to reset the CPU, the keys sometimes worked
sometimes they didn't, finaly when I realized that the reset was no
solution I took the radio back to the dealer, what solved the problem
was a cleanup of the freq mod solders, the rasin that was left over
after the radio was modified created the problem !?!
The radio is now working nicely and makes a great pair with the Z-11
tuner and OTT (by W4RT)... Can't wait till I get time off from work
for some QRP work !

My rig was FRQ converted by the factory, I suppose they forgot to

This morning I received my Z-11 autotuner and I'm now ready to QRP

Re: Memory management software?

While Commander is one great piece of software(and FREE to boot), it
really isn't designed to import/export memory frequencies. If you
tale a look at Commander's memory files, they're in what I'd
call "Native FT-817" format. Not very human readable, or intuitive
as to what the actual frequency is. And there are other lines in the
file that shouldn't be changed.

Great program otherwise, but then as I said it wasn't designed to
allow import/export of frequencies(no such function in the
program). Maybe there'll be that option in Ham Radio Deluxe, the
next generation of rig control program Simo's working on now.

Does anyone know of such a program for the FT-817? I'd really
love to be able to import and export my memory data to a

Did you take a look at Simon Brown's FT-817 Commander?

Re: Power shuts off during transmitt

One solution for the shut off problem is to put an electrolyte
capacitor accross the output lead to the radio.
I use an 4700 microfarad 25V unit (you may need two if one still
causes shut off) this provides a buffer for the power supply as
transmision power surge occurs.
Make sure you dont get the polarity wrong or the Capacitors may blow.
If this still does not fix the problem, then check at full power if
it shuts off on all bands or just at 2 metres only.
If all bands are ok especially on FM, then its an RF problem as the
144Mhhz is close to the 50 to 60Hz resonance point, and you may need
to shield the power supply in a metal box ie a child's pencil case
stc.
I would be surprised if this doesnt fix it.

Hey this was how i did it, but maybe go backwards try the metal
pencilcase first!!!!!, the get the caps.
