FT-817 and D-104

Mike Jenkins

I got a good deal on an old D-104 at a hamfest this weekend. The
D104 is the 3-wire version without the amplifier.

Can I connect this directly to the FT-817 or do I need some kind of
circuitry to match the impedance between the rigs and the microphone?

Would it be easier to purchase a heil MC-4 element and insert this
into the D-104 head?

Mike,
I don't know much about the FT-817 but I did do a lot of reading on the MIC.
Also on QRP-L some time ago there was a big discussion about it.
It's really best for AM use.
I have one here with the amp and when it was on an older FT-901 DM my audio
reports were not as good as the stock MIC.
I think they sell a MIC made by Yaesu that has an apm built in.
IMHO I would keep the FT rig matched.

I bought a couple of 5m long steel tape measures from Maplin (three
quid each - that's around $5) and silver soldered pigtails to the
steel thumb tags at the ends. I thought this would make a handy
portable dipole, as all I would have to do is attach the tape
measure cases to trees or other nearby objects using bungees or
cable ties, and hoped it would resonate at 20m -- other bands being
usable via my Z11.

I haven't been able to try it for transmission on HF yet -- soon,
Igor, soon -- but I did pop out and test everything the other day on
Hampstead Heath, at least as far as I could. I hooked the aerial up
to two branches of a tree, pulled the tape measures out to their
fullest extension and ran it into the back of the FT-817 via ten
metres of RG-58; no tuner. The ends of the dipole were around 2m off
the ground, and the middle was around 50cm. Not ideal.

I was rather surprised to find it hit 1.3:1 on Six at full extension
and with no tuner, but even more surprised to have a LZ3 come back
to me when I answered his CQ. I may have babbled a bit...

From what I've read, the steel used in these tape measures is quite
resistive, brittle and difficult to work with, which is why I
decided to leave the tape itself intact and just connect to the end
bit. But for six quid per self-packing dipole, I reckon it's worth a
go -- and not only does the aerial tidy itself away after you've
used it, but you can measure stuff with it at other times.

Photos? Sure. I'll do some this week... but really, there's nothing
much to see except my lousy soldering. Next weekend I'm away, but
the weekend after I may revisit the Heath and take some pictures of
the dipole in action.

If they got the idea from Collins then why did Collins buy Hy-Gain
tape dipoles for the KWM-2 portable set ups?

Re: Battery charging...

Rudy Marcelletti, K8SWD

Nope--mine works fine. Battery Tender charger. The charger will go into float when the rig is trickle charging, however, if you set the rig to use its higher charge rate then the charger will remain in the second stage. I just did that last night. I had 15 minutes left of charge on the rig and shut it off and the charger immediately jumped to float, indicating the battery in my go-box was full charged.

I use a Rigrunner strip (5 outlet) rubberbanded to a 7 AH SLA and power every thing from that. The first outlet on the Rigrunner strip is for the charger, then the next one goes to the battery, then the remaing ones go to the rig, amp, tuner, clear speech dsp, etc.

No, nothing to do with solar cells!

I have a 7AH Yuasa SLA battery and a three-stage AC charger for it.
It all works fine, and will be part of my HF backpack when the UK
authorities give us no-coders full access later this month (we
hope!).

In the past, I've always float-charged such batteries while using
them to power various bits of equipment. However, with the FT-817
the three stage charger doesn't always go into the third stage - I
suspect because the Yaesu continues to trickle charge the internal
NiMHs and the extra current fools the charger into thinking the main
battery still needs second-stage charging.

Is this right? I thought the change between stages in lead acid
battery charging were marked by voltage, not current, so I'm not
sure my initial idea is correct. And if it is, is there an elegant
way around the problem? It can't be good for the SLA for it to be
stuck in second-stage charging, I don't want to disconnect the
charger and leave the Yaesu connected (if I forget, that'll
discharge the SLA over time to past its safe point), and I don't
want to be faffing around removing and replacing the internal NiMHs.

Hi Mike, I agree with what your saying but, do you think
owners of other model radios are not capable of "user-error"
I have not heard of any other radio (Yaesu or otherwise) with
this sort of problem.

Because the user could have contributed to the problem as well
- overheated it by operating in an enclosed case
- applied overvoltage
- change the calibration settings to disable SWR-protection,
disable overcurrent-protection, increased power output to 15 watts
etc etc

Despite this possibility of "user-error", Yaesu still seems to be
fixing blown finals for free.

Re: Power shuts off during transmit

Hello,

Sounds like your problem is that the power supply is not putting out enough current to operate the radio at the two higher power settings. You stated that it is a "3w" power supply but I assume it is 3 amps. It is probably marginal.

Hi all,

I picked up my new 817 this morning, but what a disappointment !!!!
the "MODE, A, B, & C" buttons don't work...
The rest seem to work OK.
The rig needs to get back to the dealer !
God I hate having a malfunctioning radio right out the box...

Re: [ Power shuts off during transmit]

Actually, my first guess is that the power supply or battery voltage is
falling below the power down threshold (around 8 volts - I forget the
exact number).

If you select the PSU voltage display option, you will be able to see the
value right before it shuts down.
