I don't know much about the FT-817 but I did do a lot of reading on the MIC.
Also on QRP-L some time ago there was a big discussion about it.
It's really best for AM use.
I have one here with the amp and when it was on an older FT-901 DM my audio
reports were not as good as the stock MIC.
I think they sell a MIC made by Yaesu that has an apm built in.
IMHO I would keep the FT rig matched.
