Re: Antennas

Didier Juges

I have not tried them, but I don't think I will. I think they are too
small, with too many traps to be effective.

For the money, you'll be certainly much better off with a random length
single wire against ground, or a random length dipole with balun (no
ground) and in both cases an antenna tuner, such as the small LDG Z-11.
This will be also much easier to package, more rugged and considerably more
efficient.

This is my $0.02

Memory management software?

Hi, all! While surfing the web, I've found programs to manage the
memories in various transceivers. Besides performing the usual
memory management functions (modify memory contents, clone them,
save them to disk and the like), some can be used to read and write
the data to a .csv file that can be manipulated by other programs.

Does anyone know of such a program for the FT-817? I'd really love
to be able to import and export my memory data to a spreadsheet!

Thanks, and 73! Joe KB6WIJ

Todd,
The MFJ antenna is a copy of the B&W window mount antenna.
The only thing MFJ did was add what they call a balun at the feed point.
The coil is mounted on the mount and the mount is a part of the counter
poise.
They work but you can make a big improvement by adding a 2 foot rod below
the
coil and insulate it from the mounting bracket.
[Don]

BTW, the antenna he is asking about is the MFT-1899. It is made/marketed
by Waters and Stanton in the UK. That is the Walkabout. The B&W is a
window sill/mount antenna as you say but not a walkabout. The mono-banders
are similar to the Maldol.

Off topic! a bit quick on the trigger finger I'd say. The poster may be
running an FT-817 although he did not say so, because his interest was
focused on the antenna more that the rig.

Re: FT-817 and D-104

Hi Mike,

Generally, the old Astatic D104s have a high-impedance crystal-type
mic element in them. The fact that they've been used for years says
something about their value over time, IMHO. There was also a
version that had a pre-amp that, among other things, made the D104
into a low-impedance mic, which will match most modern day
tranceivers.

I have one of the newer retro-versions which I converted to use with
a Heil element. If you've got one of the non-preamp'd D104s, then
all you'll have to do is remove the old element and replace it with
either Heil cartridge. I kept the packing material around the
original element, used some double-sided tape and installed the Heil
element on the back side of the mic head, soldered the wires and let
it go. Currently its running on the Kenwood TS2K I use in the QTH
and I get nice reports. If you're using the FT-817 at home this
looks cool, if nothing else. Unless someone's messed around with the
PTT wiring, that should be about all you have to do to get it going.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

David/KG6IRW

Can I connect this directly to the FT-817 or do I need some kind of
circuitry to match the impedance between the rigs and the
microphone?

Would it be easier to purchase a heil MC-4 element and insert this
into the D-104 head?

Display failing?

Juan A. Bertolin (EA5XQ)

Hi,

Since some days ago (to be honest I did not realize until a week or so and
now I'm always seeing it) I realized that the display, in the mode SMALL
characters and when characters such are 1, 4, 5, in the lowest part seems
to appear a vertical mark. I mean (it is not very easy to explain it in
English, sorry) for instance, if I have the frequency 14.100 in the display
below the 1, 4 and 1 will appear a small and not very bright vertical mark
(|), when you change the number to other the mark disappears. Is the
display failing?

If it is not clear the explanation, please let me know and I will try to be
more concise.

Thanks

I have had good luck with the Miracle Whip antenna. It works well on 40 - 10
meters, and on 50 , 144 and 440 also. It will work on 80 meters but not very
well. It works without a counterpoise and most of the other walkabouts
don't. It is simple and easy to carry.

Hi Gang,
I was just wanting to know why someone would buy a very small radio then fit
it up with a *BIG* MIC.
I was told they don't work well but I never bothered to see how they sound
with a new solid state rig.
I have a new never used D-104 i'm selling if this is what you FT-817 owners
consider a mod.
No plug on it and it has a Amp with some switches on the bottom.

I plan to buy an (used) FT-817 as a second transceiver and mountain

Re: Display failing?

Didier Juges

Is the display working normally when used in the large display mode?

Are the other icons and the soft keys above the menu keys working also?

Please note that the following is what I have observed on LCD displays in
general, but I am not 100% sure the FT-817 display is configured the same way.

Usually, these kinds of display problems are due to bad connection between
the LCD and the PWB underneath it. The connection between the LCD and the
PWB is usually made with a special type of rubber that conducts electricity
only in the vertical direction (between the LCD and the PWB), so to speak,
and not lateraly, so that adjacent contacts are not shorted.

It is relatively difficult to properly align the LCD and PWB and sometimes
a small shock can misalign the two.

If this is the problem, the affected LCD elements would not work regardless
of what mode the display is in. It is difficult, but not impossible to
realign the 2, if you are careful.

A more serious problem would be the glass of the LCD itself that is
cracked, as a result of dropping the unit. The symptoms are the same as a
misaligned LCD, but it is obviously is a more serious problem that will
require replacing the entire display assembly. In my experience, that is
the more likely failure.

If some segments do not work under certain conditions but work under other
condition, that would point also to another severe problem that may also
require to replace the entire display PWB assembly.

"Lollipop" mic.
Been around since...I dunno... the twenties or so
More than not, the best mic you can use on most rigs.
I used one in the '70s on a TS520, and have one now on a 756Pro.
Far surpasses the Heil I had.
I also use one on a TR7, and other Drake gear.

About an hour after I posted the original "disappointment", I was

Re: [ Re: FT-817 and D-104]

The original was a crystal mic and later it was a dynamic mic with a volume control. This later version was popular with CBers. I have an old old one wired for my FT-102. I get lots of compliments on the audio. To me it is too giant a mic to be using with my little FT817. The web is full of articles on this old classic....try google.

A three watt power supply just isn't going to cut it, even at 2.5W, as
the finals are not 100% efficiency, and there is overhead to boot.
You take all the power available, voltage drops below minimum, and the
rig shuts off. I will say that the rig gets there a bit fast for my
taste on alkalines, but we have to be realistic. I'd definitely get a
friend to listen carefully to your signal when you're operating 500mw
with that 3W PS, as supplies that small usually don't have a lot of
filtering - you're probably putting out a bit of a hum.
Now, that 3W PS is perfectly adequate for low duty cycle use in
conjunction with a gel cell (sealed lead-acid) battery. As long as
the battery is near 100% charge, you won't be getting down into the
ripple much, and if it is getting in, choke it. Choke it anyway, if
you have one handy.
With that setup, with good connectors, you are then set up to grab the
gel cell along with the rig and have a competent portable station.

I bought a couple of 5m long steel tape measures from Maplin (three
quid each - that's around $5) and silver soldered pigtails to the
steel thumb tags at the ends. I thought this would make a handy
portable dipole, as all I would have to do is attach the tape
measure cases to trees or other nearby objects using bungees or
cable ties, and hoped it would resonate at 20m -- other bands being
usable via my Z11.

I haven't been able to try it for transmission on HF yet -- soon,
Igor, soon -- but I did pop out and test everything the other day on
Hampstead Heath, at least as far as I could. I hooked the aerial up
to two branches of a tree, pulled the tape measures out to their
fullest extension and ran it into the back of the FT-817 via ten
metres of RG-58; no tuner. The ends of the dipole were around 2m off
the ground, and the middle was around 50cm. Not ideal.

I was rather surprised to find it hit 1.3:1 on Six at full extension
and with no tuner, but even more surprised to have a LZ3 come back
to me when I answered his CQ. I may have babbled a bit...

From what I've read, the steel used in these tape measures is quite
resistive, brittle and difficult to work with, which is why I
decided to leave the tape itself intact and just connect to the end
bit. But for six quid per self-packing dipole, I reckon it's worth a
go -- and not only does the aerial tidy itself away after you've
used it, but you can measure stuff with it at other times.

Photos? Sure. I'll do some this week... but really, there's nothing
much to see except my lousy soldering. Next weekend I'm away, but
the weekend after I may revisit the Heath and take some pictures of
the dipole in action.
