Are the other icons and the soft keys above the menu keys working also? Please note that the following is what I have observed on LCD displays in general, but I am not 100% sure the FT-817 display is configured the same way. Usually, these kinds of display problems are due to bad connection between the LCD and the PWB underneath it. The connection between the LCD and the PWB is usually made with a special type of rubber that conducts electricity only in the vertical direction (between the LCD and the PWB), so to speak, and not lateraly, so that adjacent contacts are not shorted. It is relatively difficult to properly align the LCD and PWB and sometimes a small shock can misalign the two. If this is the problem, the affected LCD elements would not work regardless of what mode the display is in. It is difficult, but not impossible to realign the 2, if you are careful. A more serious problem would be the glass of the LCD itself that is cracked, as a result of dropping the unit. The symptoms are the same as a misaligned LCD, but it is obviously is a more serious problem that will require replacing the entire display assembly. In my experience, that is the more likely failure. If some segments do not work under certain conditions but work under other condition, that would point also to another severe problem that may also require to replace the entire display PWB assembly.
