The batteries are nickel metal hydride. I have seen some on eBay for $18. I have ?some gel cells and one of the Tallentcell packs for other qrp rigs so if they don¡¯t work it¡¯s no big loss. I will check the files for the info. Thanks

Re: 817 compatibility with Elecraft AX-3

I have one of the EleCraft AX1 small whip verticals.? I am not impressed, it shows over 20 db less on rcv than my 40m long wire.? I am sure you can make contacts, but I am sure you will miss many.? For the price one does not get much.??

But if you like this type of operation with very quick setup go for it.? One issue most follow is the counter poise wire, ground side, should not be left on the ground.? Many have separate pole or tripod for the wire.

Re: Final board version

When using some of these LiFePO4 batteries I would definitely insert a fuse in the positive lead.? For fT817 a 5 Amp fuse would work.? These batteries can supply a lot of current, even the smaller 9AHr.? Maybe not for long, but can deliver lots of current if have a short.

This might also prevent destruction of the PA transistors when it goes unstable.
F1002 in my ND has gone in the past.
I would probably add it if I had an '817 I was fixing.

Re: Final board version

It was over 10 years ago when Yaesu went with the newer PA board, claimed changed due to transistors on old board were no long made.? Yaesu never admitted to the oscillation issue.

I am sure the PA board you have is the newer version.

One thing to prevent the oscillation was to reverse the coax input and output cables of the PA board.

There is in FILES instruction and info on the PA board replacement.

Re: Final board version

I believe the original FT817 is subject to this problem, but it was repaired in the FT817ND. The best way to tell if you have an 817ND is by the choice of backlight colors for the display. I think the original FT817 only had two color choices, and the ND has more. I have never had any problems with my FT817ND.

Hi John and the group,

I have never used the internal battery for this exact reason, only external PS and my 817 is from the pre lot 45 so very very early production, this has original finals..I bought it new in 2001 from radio world in Toronto.
Best regards and enjoy that 817, they are incredible little radios!

The "unique" method of charging the internal batteries was something I struggled with, but I think it's really a case of set-and-forget - once you arrive at a charging method that works for you it's no big deal.

There are lots of resources online about the "Care and Feeding" of the internal FT-817/818 batteries, once you know to look for guidance, it all sort of falls into place.

Good luck!

It sounds like you may be sorted, but I'd rather repeat something you know than let you have a disappointment in the field with a flat battery - it'll only charge the battery if you first turn the radio on, then select charge in the short menu options. If you then turn the radio off again the screen will remain on but unlit with a countdown timer reading out the charge time remaining. The charge times can be edited in the long menu.
Just plugging in the radio will not charge the battery unless there was time remaining on that countdown timer from the previous charge performed.

PA-44B Charger

I recently posted a question regarding the use of the PA-44B charger with the FT-817, and its use also for the FT60R HT dual band transceiver. After reading a response from one of you, I plugged it into the 817 and the radio came on automatically and showed 11.9 volts immediately. So after leaving it off for 24 hours my 817 is now ready for ops in the field.
The previous owner of it had some type of laptop supply and voltage regulator attached to a suitable plug. This last time to recharge with it was not successful 7after leaving it to "charge" for 24 hours. I will be using the PA-44B charger from now on with the 817. 73's y'all

Re: Neptune 50w amp repair(s)

After six months I finally found two problems with this Neptune amp and the 6m band output.
?
A lead from one of the toroids in the 6m section was not soldered into the board and a post from one of the relays in the same circuit? had a bad solder joint and was not making contact.
?
I decided I would go into the board one more time before throwing it out and began by checking the relays. They seemed fine. With 5X magnifying glasses I began looking at the solder points under the board and noticed a few had burned marks and poor soldering. Turning the board over I went over each item and that is when I saw one toroid lead was off to the side of the hole and was not even soldered to the board.
?
To confirm I was not seeing things I took the board and looked at it from the bottom with a bright light above. Lo and behold there were two pin point light sources; one from the toroid and one from a relay contact! Some of the solder points looked brittle and cracked so I straightened out the lead on the? non soldered toroid? and attached it to the board. I then resoldered the relay as well.
?
Powered it up and presto, 30w out with 2.5w going in from the FT817.
?
I also found the correct right angle momentary tactile power button by taking a picture of it and letting Google identify it for me.
?
I've still not heard from the maker but that is history. The amp has been working on the other bands and now it's back to spec.
?
I want to thank those of you who gave me suggestions and trouble shooting. Now the 817 has a Mirage 2m 30w amp and the Nepture HF-6m 50w amp. All packed in a small case.

Re: Power AC adapter compatibility

None of the portable radio chargers are designed to run the radio. Especially the one supplied with it! They're just designed to charge the radio, and do it best with the radio powered down (after first turning on and selecting charge of course).
That out of the way, if the jack fits and it the same polarity (it's almost certain to be) it'll be fine.
I charge my 817 from whatever I have to hand. The FT2 charger for example is the same size barrel and output.
I have a USB type C power delivery to barrel adaptor too that kicks out 12V at whatever current the USB power supply can deliver and does the job. Very handy to charge my radios from a powerbank on the go, and I can travel with just my phone charger to do everything.
?
I've also fitted an Anderson Powerpole adaptor to one of my 817s (printed and made at home, but commercial offerings are available) and then it can just charge from the shack supply at home, the club, wherever. Those shack supplies are outputting 13.8V.
Similarly I've made a USB type C to powerpole adaptor, and that'll run the radio off some of my powerbanks.
I've also put powerpoles on an old internet router power supply that kicks out 12V, and that charges the batteries fine.
?
All the radio wants is something like 10V - 16V DC in and it'll be happy, but anything over 12V is just more heat dissipated in the regulation circuitry inside the radio. 10v might not fully charge the batteries, but it'll charge them to 10V.
?
Hope that helps.
Richard M0RIQ

Re: Power AC adapter compatibility

Hi Mark,
I have a FT-818ND and I operate it together with a compact Meanwell power supply (12V / 3A) for medical applications. I use it for both normal receive/transmit operations as well as for charging the internal battery.

Re: Power AC adapter compatibility

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

The FT-817 charges its internal battery pack from rig power, so the question is can you power the FT-817 with the PA-44b power adapter.

I presume you can, since the supplied power adapter for the FT-817 is only 0.5 amps.

Are you sure about the PA-44b part number? I see the PA-48b as an FT-60 accessory, but it too is only a 0.5 amp 12 v power source.

Both the FT-60 and the FT-817 can be powered by the EDC-6 power cord, so I see no reason you couldn't charge the battery with the alternate power adapter that is also 12v and at least 0.5 amps, but I've not done it.

Hope this helps,

Ken, N2VIP
