The "unique" method of charging the internal batteries was something I struggled with, but I think it's really a case of set-and-forget - once you arrive at a charging method that works for you it's no big deal.
There are lots of resources online about the "Care and Feeding" of the internal FT-817/818 batteries, once you know to look for guidance, it all sort of falls into place.
Good luck!

I wasn't aware of a menu option within the 817 regarding charging the battery.? This may explain why it did not charge the previous time following my POTA activation.? I have upgraded the internal battery to a LiON, and may have adapted the settings upon installation of the new battery.? I don't know because it's been a long while since the installation. Thanks for your help.

That's great news.
It sounds like you may be sorted, but I'd rather repeat something you know than let you have a disappointment in the field with a flat battery - it'll only charge the battery if you first turn the radio on, then select charge in the short menu options. If you then turn the radio off again the screen will remain on but unlit with a countdown timer reading out the charge time remaining. The charge times can be edited in the long menu.
Just plugging in the radio will not charge the battery unless there was time remaining on that countdown timer from the previous charge performed.
