Re: PA-44B Charger
That's great news.
It sounds like you may be sorted, but I'd rather repeat something you know than let you have a disappointment in the field with a flat battery - it'll only charge the battery if you first turn the radio on, then select charge in the short menu options. If you then turn the radio off again the screen will remain on but unlit with a countdown timer reading out the charge time remaining. The charge times can be edited in the long menu.
Just plugging in the radio will not charge the battery unless there was time remaining on that countdown timer from the previous charge performed.

PA-44B Charger
I recently posted a question regarding the use of the PA-44B charger with the FT-817, and its use also for the FT60R HT dual band transceiver. After reading a response from one of you, I plugged it into the 817 and the radio came on automatically and showed 11.9 volts immediately. So after leaving it off for 24 hours my 817 is now ready for ops in the field.
The previous owner of it had some type of laptop supply and voltage regulator attached to a suitable plug. This last time to recharge with it was not successful 7after leaving it to "charge" for 24 hours. I will be using the PA-44B charger from now on with the 817. 73's y'all |

Re: Neptune 50w amp repair(s)
After six months I finally found two problems with this Neptune amp and the 6m band output.
?
A lead from one of the toroids in the 6m section was not soldered into the board and a post from one of the relays in the same circuit? had a bad solder joint and was not making contact.
?
I decided I would go into the board one more time before throwing it out and began by checking the relays. They seemed fine. With 5X magnifying glasses I began looking at the solder points under the board and noticed a few had burned marks and poor soldering. Turning the board over I went over each item and that is when I saw one toroid lead was off to the side of the hole and was not even soldered to the board.
?
To confirm I was not seeing things I took the board and looked at it from the bottom with a bright light above. Lo and behold there were two pin point light sources; one from the toroid and one from a relay contact! Some of the solder points looked brittle and cracked so I straightened out the lead on the? non soldered toroid? and attached it to the board. I then resoldered the relay as well.
?
Powered it up and presto, 30w out with 2.5w going in from the FT817.
?
I also found the correct right angle momentary tactile power button by taking a picture of it and letting Google identify it for me.
?
I've still not heard from the maker but that is history. The amp has been working on the other bands and now it's back to spec.
?
I want to thank those of you who gave me suggestions and trouble shooting. Now the 817 has a Mirage 2m 30w amp and the Nepture HF-6m 50w amp. All packed in a small case.

Re: Power AC adapter compatibility
None of the portable radio chargers are designed to run the radio. Especially the one supplied with it! They're just designed to charge the radio, and do it best with the radio powered down (after first turning on and selecting charge of course).
That out of the way, if the jack fits and it the same polarity (it's almost certain to be) it'll be fine.
I charge my 817 from whatever I have to hand. The FT2 charger for example is the same size barrel and output.
I have a USB type C power delivery to barrel adaptor too that kicks out 12V at whatever current the USB power supply can deliver and does the job. Very handy to charge my radios from a powerbank on the go, and I can travel with just my phone charger to do everything.
?
I've also fitted an Anderson Powerpole adaptor to one of my 817s (printed and made at home, but commercial offerings are available) and then it can just charge from the shack supply at home, the club, wherever. Those shack supplies are outputting 13.8V.
Similarly I've made a USB type C to powerpole adaptor, and that'll run the radio off some of my powerbanks.
I've also put powerpoles on an old internet router power supply that kicks out 12V, and that charges the batteries fine.
?
All the radio wants is something like 10V - 16V DC in and it'll be happy, but anything over 12V is just more heat dissipated in the regulation circuitry inside the radio. 10v might not fully charge the batteries, but it'll charge them to 10V.
?
Hope that helps.

Re: Power AC adapter compatibility
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe FT-817 charges its internal battery pack from rig power, so the question is can you power the FT-817 with the PA-44b power adapter.I presume you can, since the supplied power adapter for the FT-817 is only 0.5 amps. Are you sure about the PA-44b part number? I see the PA-48b as an FT-60 accessory, but it too is only a 0.5 amp 12 v power source. Both the FT-60 and the FT-817 can be powered by the EDC-6 power cord, so I see no reason you couldn't charge the battery with the alternate power adapter that is also 12v and at least 0.5 amps, but I've not done it. Hope this helps, Ken, N2VIP On May 8, 2025, at 08:53, Mark via groups.io <KD5SMF@...> wrote:

Power AC adapter compatibility
I own The FT-817, and a FT60R. After coming home from a POTA activation I immediately set up to recharge my batteries overnight. When I bought my FT-817 it came with a charging/power supply which I use just for it. My FT60R has a PA-44B AC adapter to charge the handheld.
I noticed that the plugs for each are similar. However, the charging/power from the PA-44B is 12v 2.0A output. I'm just wondering if it is compatible with the FT-817 since the max output of the transceiver is 5 watts? Can I use the PA-44B to charge my battery in the FT-817? 73's de kd5smf |

A fix for a dead Ft-817ND/Ft-818ND
Hi folks
I have owned at least 5 of these radios over the years and have enjoyed each.. After strokes I sold/gave away all of them. Since Ive gotten better and needed a CW radio (sans of course the now MASSIVELY expensive CW filter). I purchased a used FT-817ND and I was given an almost new FT-818ND which was completely dead. This is about the dead one.. I fixed it. I have fixed several, but this is the first one like this for me.. I spent about 7 hours poking around and measuring things.. the pwr button simply would not work... Not the fuses... check.. there are several smd fuses to verify. No burn marks anywhere.. the owner said it just died one time when powering up.. he did not say what he had connected a computer I think and maybe something else he does not remember.. he just set it aside..and eventually gave it to me.. So I spent some time with the Technical document with all the schematics.. what I found was 12-13V getting to all the right places. I removed the front and carefully probed the regulator for the 5V supply.. 13.5 in and 2.5 out... and it was some HOT! Aha.. The fancy regulator a 5V 100ma regulator was either loaded down or it had gone bad. It supplies the Power up regulator and 5v to the CPU... I removed this regulator and checked the load.. all was fine.. I checked the availability of the S-812C50AUA-C3E-T2G regulator.. its obsolete.. unobtainium so.. I thought.. hmm.. 5V 100ma with overvoltage protection.. I have several 78L05 regulators.. better dissipation, but pinouts not the same... pin 2 is gnd.. well.. I carefully fanagled the device and leads to fit in the spot on the front control board. I VERY carefully soldered it in.. Its not very pretty, but guess what... it WORKS now.. I have tested now for days.. all is well. This radio has parts that are next to impossible to find.. has VERY expensive CW filters for a $300-$400 premium.. but if one thinks about needs then it can be fixed. Like the old boatanchors. Sans the filter.. The SOTA filter (audio) or external audio filter like the NEScaf or a used FL-3a filter (I have one) for like $30 can be used! It is still a fine CW radio.. SSB works but I dont use this... Pictures here: Thought some here might be interested.. These are keepers for me ! neat radio 73 N1GMM |

GB4VVV Special Event Station tomorrow 8th May
Hi All, The Special?Event Station GB4VVV for the 80th anniversary of VE Day will be operating on 20m SSB from around 16:00 to 19:30 utc using an FT-817 and a 20m dipole made from two AMPRO mobile whips at 3.6m agl. I'll be as close to 14.1945 MHz as I can, other users permitting. Other bands will be in use depending on who turns up. We will be operating from the club car park so at the mercy of the weather. Then on Saturday 10th we'll be active from the clubroom of South Notts ARC on 20m running more power, and on 2m/70cm, from 12:00 (or perhaps a little earlier) until 16:00 utc. Please listen and give us a shout. We are hoping to attract new members to the club. Vy 73, John G4EDX/G4JBC John Fletcher |

Re: FTX-1 Pricing Announced
HRO called me regarding my reservation yesterday evening. Gentleman on the phone was super nice, but sounded tired. Went with the Optima package, 1899.95 for the radio before tax. Almost didn't pull the trigger for many of the reasons listed in this thread. I have an 817nd that I use for HF only for POTA and love it.? An FT-300DR in my vehicle that I loath because of the horrible UX.? Plus an FT-710 AESS that I had set up in my shack at our old house, but have not gotten it out of the box in the 14 months since we moved. I really like the 710. Easy to use, great audio, decent tuner, just feels right to me UX wise.? Just no decent place to set it up in the house, my wife would tolerate a day or two on a folding table in the dining room... Maybe. Hoping for similar UX on the FTX, none of the rants or reviews on radios cover that part well, and is one of the most important things. If good thinking to gift the FT-300DR to some fresh ham in our club, and sell the 710. Put it in the vehicle most of the time with an ATAS-120, pull it out for the occasional dining room visit. I will probably keep the 817 forever, it just does what it does well. Just my thoughts.? Greg KO4SOV On Fri, May 2, 2025, 11:39?AM Ken N2VIP via <ken=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: FTX-1 Pricing Announced
I plan to wait a year or so before deciding but it looks like a pretty good setup if you get the 100w Package. That package acts sort of like a cross between an 817/818 (or 705) plus FT-891 plus FT-991a. I say this because it¡¯s 100w, all bands including 2m/70cm and the interesting thing is that it includes a tuner. It acts like a base station 991a or a 100w field radio like the 891 or remove the head and it acts like an IC-705 (or 10w FT-817/818). It¡¯s an interesting design.? |

One thing I noticed on 6m? with the VX6?? on 6m is that a big antenna? will let too much other freq RF in .
Needs a filter on 6m.
Otherwise an exce;ent radio.
Saw a VX6RE?? on qth,com for $100.
May just need? a? jumper change to convert it to US .
Good price!
