Re: Power bank questions
开云体育Mmmm, careful.? At 88 watt-hours, that's barely more than 7ah at 12v, not counting internal conversion losses.? The inverter may be able to source 100 or 300 watts, but not for long.? 300 watts from an 88 watt-hour battery will drain it in something like 15 minutes.? Of course the FT-817/818 draws considerably less - you'd likely get 5+ hours of use - but there's no Tardis-derived magic here.? Start plugging other stuff in, and the run time can drop very quickly. When looking at these "Solar generators", the important spec to look at is the watt-hour rating of the battery.? The AC output spec is just for the inverter; it's a limit for how much (peak) power can be drawn, not for how long. Greg? KO6TH Ron Wright via groups.io wrote:

Re: Power bank questions
Martin, Yes there a lots of power banks that put out USB power and 12VDC power and also 120VAC power, all in one battery box.? I have 2 with 120VAC output along with USB and 12VDC outlets.? They come in a verity of power levels, mine are 100 & 300W. There are other that can power a FT817 for hours that put out USB and 12VDC. Here is one on Amazon.? No tsure if you need 120 or 240VAC.

Re: Power bank questions
Two ordinary 5 volt power banks of sufficient ah ratings wired in series creates 10 volts which is about the ideal voltage for the radio.

Re: Power bank questions
There is USB-C, the connector standard, and USB-C PD which supports higher voltages and current ratings (like charging laptop batteries).
?
If I understand the OP's desire, he wants a power bank that outputs proper voltages for both their cellphone and their FT-817.
?
TalentCell has some interesting power banks, like this:
?
?
But this particular model lacks a high-current/high-voltage USB-C PD port...
?
Personally I'd prefer something like this:
?
- A Bioenno 9 Amp LiFePO4 battery & charger (still on BOGO at $115 plus shipping for TWO batteries and TWO chargers)
?
- This PowerWerx USB-C QC adapter: $30
?
- A powerpole panel mount to power the FT-817
?
- A small Harbor Freight case, like this:
?
Yes, that takes you to $200, but if you can find a friend to split the BOGO deal on the battery, you're now under $150 for a great, robust power solution.
?
Hope this helps,

Power bank questions
I was wondering if it is possible to have a power bank?to charge my phone (while hiking) and also to have it as a backup power source for the?Yaesu. Not only voltage and current ratings on websites like Amazon are confusing (and probably wrong),?but I'm also insecure if a USB-C to DC cable would?handle the?~2.6 A current the?Yaesu uses to TX?(I use a lot of FT8).? Is it possible to have a power bank to meet my needs? What kind of criteria should I look for? Daniel PY2TDB. |

Re: Antenna question
Daniel:
If black is the radio, which is about 20 cm, they are functionally equivalent. ?Neither is optimal, however due to the radiator of the antenna you described being shortened by about 1/3 relative to a 1/4-wave radiator and there being only one radial. A few more radials in this configuration could add a few more dB to your signal. Basically, with one radial, you're cutting effective power to less than a third. I'm assuming a vertical radiator and 1/4 wave radial at 90 degrees.? ?

Re: Sotabeams speech compressor
OK so, my ssb mic gain is now 50, without compressor my ALC shows no bars, with compressor it shows 3 bars. Power meter, set to PEP not AVG no compressor shows 1.5w with 5w on a whistle but with compressor shows 4w with 5w on a whistle.
Say @ 4dB extra.?
Using a kiwisdr in Germany without compressor showed no signal on waterfall but very very faint audio, not enough to copy. With compressor there was a trace on the waterfall and audio was stronger, clear and copyable. This was from an efrw in gloucestershire back garden in inverted L highest point 6m. Next doors house is currently encased in scaffolding and tin sheets so my signal was probably not very good.
Looks promising, next time I'll be on top of gloucestershires highest point with a full sized dipole.
Pot settings inside compressor are as set from factory, halfway through adjustment.?

Re: Sotabeams speech compressor
A compressor will increase average loudness and thus power, but readability is reduced as it is increased and beyond a point very much. Those with hearing impairments may find readability reduced more. In practice 3W to 4.5W isn't much increase in range, so compressor may not help much compared to so simply adding a 20W PA, which on average with uncompressed SSB might look like 10W. A peak reading power meter gives a better idea of power and a DX signal report of readability. Almost all power meters will give an average, not even RMS, with speech. |
Re: Witch DSP Filter is Better? BHI or Sotabeams?
I had the laserbeam filter unit installed in my 817nd for a while. It does work but has a couple of annoying side effects. Well, at least mine did.
?
First, the metering for signal strength is thrown way off. Not the end of the world, but a bit nippy.
?
Second, and most annoyingly, the filter creates ghost images of strong signals. These were a couple of kHz away from the actual signal. I can't remember the exact offset but it was a pain in the hoop to constantly flip the filter in and out of line to see if I was listening to a real signal or an image. This could partially be worked around by using the IF Shift on the radio.? The filter was installed exactly as per the instructions. I am very comfortable working with surface mount components and have confidence in my work. I even removed and re-installed it in case there was some hidden issue with my work but that made zero difference.?
?
The second issue was annoying enough for me to eventually remove the filter and throw it in the bin. I approached sotabeams about the issue at the time but they were less than energetic in their response.
?
I eventually managed to source a 500Hz Collins mechanical filter for a VERY reasonable price and use that in the radio. The difference is night and day!
?
Given the current cost of mechanical filters, I'd go for the BHI option.?
?
This is just my experience and I'm sure others are happy with the laserbeam. It is cheap after all.?
?
Cheers,?

Re: Witch DSP Filter is Better? BHI or Sotabeams?
Another option is the external 4StatesQRP HI-PER-MITE audio CW filter kit . ?This filter ?is 200 Hz wide and has no ringing - a truly ?amazing 4 pole filter with 3 low pass filters and 1 high pass filter cascaded together. ??
All background hiss is essentially eliminated when the filter is engaged. ?

Google ‘HI-PER-MITE’ for more info including an audio demo of this CW audio filter in action. |
