Hi John: I had a similar issue for the FT-818. There was a guy in Indiana who made a dual CAT cable but, he disappeared. The Z-817 + tuner split out the CAT port ?But there was expansion port devices years ago, but not much lately. Garry?

I believe that to be a serial based connection.? (that means it would not be able to run two devices simultaneously)

Added the splitter. Curiously, the radio end had to be connected to one of the split sides to work. Something to do with crossover or something I guess. I whacked a bunch of ferrite clamps on the various leads so the additional bits didn't cause any RF pickup issues. Shame the M-90 didn't just pass through the same as the MD-200, but this isn't too ugly I don't think? Mike

Things have changed. This M-90 microphone doesn't have connectivity between the two sockets. The pain. Luckily there are some RJ45 splitters on Amazon. Will be here Friday to try. Mike

I like using the 817/818 base station and as such prefer a base mic. Since the MD-100 & MD-200 and newer, Yaesu base mics have a reversible cable for using on 8 pin round and RJ45 radio alike. Here's my latest box connected to the new M-90. As the RJ45 socket is not used as the 8 pin round is mic-side, it just goes into there. Photographed with the YF-122C I was fortunate enough to win on eBay a month or so ago, they are like rocking horse... 73 Mike

This is true. It is one annoyance I have with the FT817. Somehow the fast tune accidentally got turned on once when I was portable. I couldn't turn it off. I had a mic that didn't have a FST (fast) button. I later added a button for it to the mic.

Hi Markus Unfortunately the momentary push of the power button used on the larger 8x7s doesn't work on the 817. The quick fix is to borrow an MH31 mic and use its fst button. Alternatively You should have room in your stock mic to get a small pb switch in and the correct wire is probably connected in the plug already to set an fst up. Your only other recourse is to do the partial reset, hold in V/M while pressing power on, but remember that you will lose the memories so do a back up first. Simon, G0EIY

i am using an after-market microfone, with an buildt-in electred-capsule, on my FT-817 (non -ND)
The mike does not have any other 'buttons'! (UP/DWN/FAST)
I know to put on the 'running man' and what it does, (greater steps in VFO-frequenzy-setting, etc.) with the original microfone. (FAST-button)
But, without the MH-31, I normaly can't switch it 'on' this 'running man'!
But it happens that the 'running man' IS switched 'ON', and I have no glue, to switch it 'OFF' again! - Also, I don't know, how it will appear on the LCD. I don't know, what combination I have done, to switch over to the 'running man'. -

I had a similar issue with the swr display driving me mad....
In the end on my unit, it was related to the grey foil for rf shieling covering the pa unit.
I placed a piece of insulationg plasic foil between the pa board and the grey foil and the? issue was gone.
Dont ask, how long it took me, to find out...
Might be worth a try.

The problem I had with some FT
& other such radios, the ape that tightened
the set/grub screw over tightened it. That caused a rise on
the shaft that mad
it near impossible to remove the knob and one, the force
ruined the encoder
attached to the shaft, requiring replacement of the whole
assembly.
There are several possible
solutions, but you have have some mechanical
aptitude.
One is, once the set screw is
removed, drill though to the screw's hole into
the shaft that will remove the rise. You have to then replace
the knob.
The other is to use a pulley
puller, but that requires drilling through the knob
front face to press against the shaft while pulling the knob
off of the shaft.
Neither are fun exercises. B^)

I have a key that came with a spare Yaesu FT81x series VFO knob. I've just measured mine at 1.46 mm or 0.0575" AF.

In U.S. we call them set screws and is almost always an "Allen" type. I assume it's a metric size given other 817 hardware is metric.

I have the Portable Zero Field Power 3 battery case system for my FT-817ND.? It uses a Bioenno Power 3 Amp Hour battery.? I purchased this early this year and so far my experience has been good.? YMMV.
