Re: CAT commands ?

Bo W4GHV

Interesting project, I'd love details. I've worked a bit in that area.?
Currently with a Teensy 3.2, Arduino, simple encoder, & switches. It has a USB 'output'. ?( forgot the correct name).
The encoder changes the value pointed to by the mouse & the buttons enter any keys or messages to the 'keyboard'.
That should work for entering CAT commands. I'll be trying that soon.
Working on SDRUNO, Win4Icom, fldigi at present.?
Does your project work TWO WAY? ?The display unit on eBay for sale only displays and has no command ability.

Very interesting report Steve, I'd like to see the pictures, thanks.

Re: Lithium Battery Options

I simply use an external RC battery - a Turnigy 2650mAh 3S 1C sourced from Hobby King.

The battery discharge is rated at '1C' - this is fine for QRP use - and it doesn't need a specific storage voltage when not used, unlike many higher capacity cells. It is tiny and weighs in at just under 5.5 oz. I also bought a suitable charger from them, and with any lithium cell & I heed the manufacturers instructions on safe charging.

I added XT60 connectors - and most importantly an in-line fuse. I don't want the FT817 PCB to perform that task in the even of a fault :-)

I mainly use it for occasional operating /P when on holiday. The battery capacity is far greater than my kids patience, so I've never run flat ! But at this price, you could have a main and back-up battery in the to-go box.

The only problem I've had was explaining what it was to an airport security guard when leaving Cyprus - it went through the X-ray a few times !

The RC world has a lot of battery and connector options - all a lot more affordable than ham radio accessories, so it's worth taking a look.

CAT commands ?

I have just finished putting together a 'remote faceplate' for my '817'.

This is a Nextion touch screen coupled to an Arduino and is based on the excellent work by EA3DMM (see the Nextion Facebook Group), plus not to forget IK1JNS who helped me in obtaining the correct library files - thanks gents.

This Allows me to control the radio via the touchscreen with features such as direct freq entry, mode change, signal metering etc etc.

Now, before i build a case I was wondering if i could include a Rotary encoder for up/down tuning with perhaps the push button of the encoder used to select fast/slow tuning . The stumbling block, after many google searches i can't find any mention of tuning or fast/slow functions being available as CAT command ?

Are these command available ? I am guessing so as i vaguely recall these functions being in some of the PC based CAT applications, unless they are doing something clever in software !

Any tips or guidance would be appreciated.

Rgds, Peter (G1FXE).....

Re: Ldg tuner

I have a number of the LDG tuners, AT100, Z11Pro and Z817 I use with my FT817.? I like them all, but really like the AT100, has forward and reflected bars on front so can see power output and reflected and really see when tuned.

Yes I advise anyone getting one of these tuners to go with one of the larger ones that can handle 125W, As said can also be used to 100W rigs.? The tuners will tune down to less than 0.5W so at 2.5 or 5W from FT817 not a problem.? I just wanted smaller & lighter tuner for my FT817 so got the Z817 for it.? I am pleased with it's performance.

Crud, how'd I miss that.

I went right to their battery listings (which didn't mention the charger) and ignored the statement on their homepage!

Obviously you were right John, thanks for sharing the link.

Re: Windcamp WLB 817 - recharge with a charger for LIPO

The? Windcamp WLB 817 battery has a some form of internal BMS
How do I know my, Windcamp WLB 817 about 10 months old and? which was being recharged by the supplied charger died.
The pack was purchased from? Windcamp? direct ,when I sent emails with no response from? Windcamp At that point I decided to see what was going on.
Attached? probes to the thin + - wires no voltage? then decided to open the shrink wrap and found that the pack has 3 flat pack labeled 3000ma cells, one cell was bubbled and all cells are connected to a black chunk that after removal of what looks like some form black hot melt substance? reveled some form of 3 cell? basic "bms".
With the removal of the bad cell the other two cell showed voltage.
This looks very similar to what is in use with the many avalabel Blue heat shrink China batteries, and the chargers are identical since I have them that I use to power my Signalink when I operate in Parks
Well I will not be spending $90 with Windcamp ever again,?
Picked up? (3) 3000mAh? Ni-Mh 9.6 v packs? that even included a new USB up charger I connecterised with Micro Plug"s 2R's, they provide on a average 2900mAh? and my FT-817's are happy. I still have my old 2200 mAh but they are "old" .
If any one is interested i can? provide pictures of the disassembled? Windcamp WLB 817.

I can attest to the quality and robustness of the Bioenno LifePO4 battery. ?I use the 12v 3ah with my FT-818 and get ~5 hours of runtime at full power. ?Additionally, the battery/charger allows for full power TX while charging the battery. The Field Power 3 from PortableZero makes for a great looking container for the battery that allows for a safe and secure battery enclosure.?

I bought an LDG Z-817 tuner but now wish I'd bought the Z-100PLUS because it's still extremely compact and light, but has the ability to handle 125W, so it could be used with other radios, say on Field Days or in the shack.

The Z-100PLUS still uses the battery saving technology incorporated in the Z-817. I have both ATU's.

Thanks Gail,
I had already found this written in the instruction booklet (I had also written it).
What I wonder is:
how does the non-original charger receive the stop charge command?
assuming that the recharging circuit contained in the cover cuts off the power supply (the original charger LED changes from red to green), will the non-original charger stop?

Re: Lithium Battery Options

Although I have the internal Windcamp battery now, I've run my FT-817 and other radios off one of these:

As it is able to deliver enough current to start a car, I had no trouble powering a radio. As a bonus, it can also run laptops up to 19V.

Specifically batteries that use Lithium Cobalt chemistry. They can and do fail in a spectacular manner. Lithium Iron (LiFePO) do not. I stopped fooling with LiCo batteries.

Well... I think that this falls into the 'too complicated' bucket.
My solution will be to use a 12vdc to 240vac inverter, driving the supplied wallwart charger.
Job done...

Beauty of that solution is, I can also use a 240vac to 12vdc psu to run the FT817 'off the mains' whilst recharging the battery?!

Thanks again
