Re: W4RT Dual filter PCB
Rick, Excellent question! At Present the Best alternative is the SotaBeam unit, a bit tricky (for older eyes ) to install but equivalent to the W4 board. With a 3000mAh battery the setup is best for power. The cost in comparison in getting a "Collins" is actually minima.l If you are not at ease in doing the install I am sure that a enterprising ham can be found (in the States) that can do it reasonably. I have one installed in Salvaged third 817 she was a Basket Case Flea Market $50 that needed a final board and some tender care, performance is better then my 817 with a Collins CW filter. Regards. Re: W4RT Dual filter PCB
I have some blank boards.? I'd be willing to photograph one, provided someone can point to a way to get permission to copy it from the original designer.? I've no desire to get involved in a dispute over rights.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThere should definitely be a resolution of the board's copyright before simply copying it.According to QRZ.com, W4RT is a club call.? Start there... Greg? KO6TH 'Eric van de Weyer' evdw@...

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Andy, ? I would suggest that, if W4RT is not SK, then he should be approached and asked for permission to replicate his board or, failing that his family should be asked for the permission. ? He may be willing to provide the layout of the board to a successor to manufacture which would simplify the process. ? 73¡.Eric VK2VE ? From: FT817@...

Re: CW filter options
P.S. Linear Technology and Texas Instruments for audio filter ICs as well. One can also homebrew multipole as many orders as needed as Chebyshev, Butterworth, etc. with op amps. Joe On Monday, June 17, 2019 Joseph Wonoski N1KHB <FT817@...> wrote:

Are we talking about IF or audio filters? Are Murata filters a candidate?? It seems to me that National Semiconductor made an IC audio filter left to the user for setting characteristics with passives. Joe On Monday, June 17, 2019 rmckee1957 <FT817@...> wrote:

As I understand it, this is an AF not IF filter that is extremely
effective.? Like any other internal modification to your radio, you need
to be comfortable with a fine-tip soldering iron and be willing to void
your (mostly worthless) warranty. For those in the US, DX Engineering resells almost all of the SotaBeams products. Disclaimers:?
I have a business relationship with SotaBeams and can stand behind the
quality of their business.? I am not being compensated for this
comment.? I have not used this filter but would be seriously considering
it myself if I had a radio that needed a filter.? It might not work
with a FT-818 - I don't believe anyone has tested it yet. jon N0WL |

Re: CW filter options
I have an ND with the sotabeams filter, it is installed so a Collins filter can be run parallel with it and I find it very comparable to the Collins on CW. The slopes of the filters must be similar because to my ear they have almost the same sound.
Depending on your use case it may be a good option. The Sotabeams is always in-line either using the wide or narrow setting. And since it is a dsp audio filter it is always in series with the stock ceramic filter on receive. Ultimate rejection of closed space signals probably would still be a good case for the Collins filters but for just general use I think the sotabeams is very usable. The only interest I have in any of the equipment is as an owner but I do have an 817nd on QRZ for sale with the sotabeams filter installed right now. 73 KV4TT- Mike |
Re: CW filter options
Hi all: Another option as an audio DSP unit is the Funtronics ADSP filter: It receives mixed reviews on eham.net, I have one, and must say that, on SSB, it works pretty well; on CW, it is finicky, but usable. Still no match for my TS590S, though! Stephen KI9S

Re: CW filter options
You're totally correct.? W4RT closed their doors over a year ago.? They sold off all the filter kits, then offered up the bare boards last.? I bought up a few for "FUTURE NEEDS".? AFAIKT, nothing more is available from W4RT.
I have installed the dual-filter kit in two FT-817NDs, and one ICOM IC-703+.? I luv em, and now my German nephew is begging me to a a bare board.? He did his first SOTA activation, and fell in love with the Collins SSB filter, but he also sees the need for the CW filter.? Like me, he wants both.

Re: CW filter options
For the most part the filters are all made by Collins (and are no longer in production), so all the options go back to the same basic filter.?
The various retailers mount the filter on a board suitable for your rig. For me, inrad has been a good source when I couldn't find a used filter on ebay. I dont think W4RT is still in business (correct me of I'm wrong) and they were the one who made the board that let you use 2 filters on the 817. Hope that helped. John - KE7WNB? |
