FT817 ordered from HRO
david feldman
At HRO yesterday I asked if I could go on a list to notify
when 817 arrived; they said it was in their price list and took an order (back-ordered). I don't know when it is due to arrive - they'll call me - but I imagine it's not long. 73 Dave WB0GAZ wb0gaz@... _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at . I tried all of your combinations , with a and b vfos programmed to different frequencies and or bands and split enabled all of your combinations work fine .

Re: Price
Tracy Underwood
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYes they can, and always do. As a former radio
dealer, I remember when we actually had a radio in stock a few days before we
were allowed to sell them. Also, we had a price listed for the SGC SG-2020
months before they ever even built the first one, let alone received type
acceptance. On most amateur radio equipment, type acceptance is only a formality
anyway.

Re: 817 tx observations
Howard Z
A few more observations on my FT-817 , after studying the specs of the final amplifier it became aparent that the "FETs" used in the final are extremely robust ( ) and can safely run 10 watts out per piece , each device can disipate 10 watts of heat with a max junction temp of 175C . I decided to modify some parameters in the radio just to see what could be accomplished , in fact the radio at max power was outputing 4 watts at 1.88 amps , removing the transmit limiting current completely in hf only (HF1IC1 ,2 and 3 and increasing the drive (HF1H1 , 2 and 3 see the alignment on egroups) the radio ran 10 watts at 9-13 volts with 2.5 amps total consumption , simple math proved that the TX was 50% efficient and max current parameters were never exceeded , however I did not test any further and suspect that since the transmitter was probably running full bore there was probably no headroom left for ALC so I then adjusted the IC settings for 7 watts and the drive "H1" settings for a max of 6 watts , alc was not affected and so I left it this way . I realize that this represents a very small DB increase going from 4 to 6 watts however I felt that this setting was the best option in high power setting ( the rig has 4 switchable settings with a warning power icon in the highest setting when on battery power )

Re: Received FT-817 today
Gus Treewater
I heard Howard on 20 meters late this afternoon. I listened
critically to the audio, and I thought the rig sounded great. I was mobile in California and I guess he was in Eastern Canada. Although he didn't move the S-meter I copied most of his transmission with relative ease. With all my road noise I have trouble copying lots of mediocre audio signals, but his was great.Enjoy your new radio Howard. gus k2gt |

RECEIVED MY 817 TODAY !
Howard Z
Hi everyone I received my ft817 today from my friend in Japan , The radio is as nice as can be imagined and is indeed a dream come true , The first qso was with a w0 reporting 5/9 on 17 meters . Battery current is around 310ma at zero volume and with the lamp off subtract 30 ma at comfortable volume add 50 ma , I will make more measurements when I have time . I purchased the new 1.6ah Sanyo/GE NiMh AA cell batteries , the radio as it comes will not charge batteries in the AA holder , the radio requires that you purchase the optional FN72 battery pack however a quick glance at the schematic and I simply cut the green wire on the battery holder (there are 3 wires going to the holder ) . The batteries now charge at a 180 mah rate , the charge time is programmable , 2 settings 6 hours and 10 hours , the charge rate is fixed so obviously the 1.6 ah batteries need more than 10 hours for full charge ( 150% of their rate) The charge cycle is manual , in otherwords you have to turn it on , the batteries charge whether the radio is on or off and in the off mode there is a count down timer which displays how much time left until the charge turns off . There are no safety circuits so it is possible to repeat the charge cycle and overcharge the cells , however a 6 or 10 hour rate will not damage them .
The S meter is "cute" not only is there a bar display as in all radios but there is a digit to the left of the bar displaying the signal level ( example "S4" ) . My next project will be to probably change some jumpers in the front panel to enable the USA 70cm and 2 m bands . Since this rig is "Japanese" it only covers 144-146 and 430-440 . The 817 comes with an antenna similar to the one supplied with the VX5 which covers 144 and 450 and with the screw on extender 6 meters as well (all 3 bands ) . I have some beautiful whips from my JRC JST10 hand held hf "lunchbox" for 15 and 40 meters and will try them in portable use . Yaesu should make antennas similar to those . ANYONE OUT THERE FROM YAESU LISTENING .. :) 73's for now Howard VE2AED I beleive the 817 will set a trend _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at . Current etc

I have an 817 in the air presently from Japan , As soon as I receive it (I hope this week ) I will make all measurements and confirm all of your questions . I just picked up at a hamfest this weekend NiMH AA cells made by Sanyo ( 1.6 AH ) so this should provide the 817 with alot of hours between charges . It appears that the batteries will charge in the radio only if the status of " Battery" terminal is modified . This terminal is meant to sense the FNB-72 Yaesu battery and I don't think anything else will charge without a mod . Fortunately I picked up all schematics . Will keep you all posted .

Re: QRPp or better?
My guess is its customised to 150 or 300mw it has 3 or 4 settings,
however a set like this will surely wind down internally to milliwatts not being like the FT100/IC706 and only having a 10w amp I would have thought it shouldnt be a problem. another thought is use lowest dc current in possible 8v ?? may reduce it further. this will also reduce heat dissipation from components as opposed to using 13.8v. keeping case cool (that's if it does get warm at all on rx). de John --- In FT817@..., Rohn Blake <rohn@p...> wrote: Apologies if this has been covered... has anyone heard how low thepower can be dropped? |
Re: 450mA???
Cannot remember where I seen figures but it should, if I remember
correctly draw 150ma on low to medium vol levels ok if you have cans on or are listening with a quiet background. But also bear in mind most handies draw similair currents and run of approx 4 AA cells , the 817 has 8 AA cells. Personally this has not deterred me in the slightest. Thank goodness Yaesu have had the decency to add an AA holder as opposed to a custom sealed ni-cd pack or similair. We all know the AA battery is now an industry standard in most applications, the technology is slowing to ideas of shrinking components with low consumption. This leaves it wide open to battery manufacturers to take over. Again watch this space , My guess is that we will see an AA Li-on cell with voltage to 1.5v as opposed to 3.6v (as present) with excellent amps per hour possibilities, hence a good life for all us FT817 user's.
