Re: New Version of the RATS FT-817 GUI Available - It Has A New Look

Am I the only person who thinks that it's amazing that users
of software sold for the FT-817 are being asked to learn the
physical interface (in plain English, the front panel) of
another rig? I guess it's OK if you already owned an
FT-847, but I don't, and I sure don't need how to operate
radios I don't own or operate. Heck, there's barely enough
room in the gray matter to remember how to operate the rigs
I _do_ own. %-)

Re: Frequency Calibration

I'm a new FT-817 owner. I picked up mine at The Dayton Hamvention
last week. Once I got it hame and got it fired up I noticed it was
about 260-300 cycles off frequency. I concated HRO and they are
shipping me a new one.

in the displayed received, and transmitting frequency. Basically
the
radio display read LOWER than the actual frequency on both transmit
and receive. Using an AOR AR7030, VX5-R and an Optoelectronics
Scout
frequency counter, I found the followig:
440 Mhz: transmits and receives 15 kHz low (e.g.. to xmit on my
local 443.4 rpt, I must enter 443.415)
2 meter: 5 kHz low
10 meter: 0.650 kHz low
21 meter: 0.450 kHz low
etc.

Problem Number 2: There is something wrong with the power output on
SSB compared to AM and CW. When I transmit on AM and CW and set
the
meter to read Power Output, the meter behaves as expected, i.e.
more
bars for higher power and the battery voltage on my gel cell
decreases appropriately for high current draw (e.g. goes from 11.9
v
to 9.0 volts at high power). HOWEVER on both LSB and USB, the
Power
meter never shows any bars despite my ramping the power output up
and
down. Furthermore, the battery voltage only comes down to 11.4
volts
implying minimal current draw and minimal power output. I CAN hear
myself transmitting (off frequency) on the AR7030, so it does
transmit.

Problem Number 3:
This may not be a problem - I might just be doing something wrong -
in adjusting the microphone the manual tells you to dial up the MIC
GAIN menu, then speak and look for increasing and decreasing bars -
I
NEVER see any bar despite varying the gain from 0 to 100. I DO
hear
the effect of increasing and decreasing gain when I monitor my
transmission, but the radio just does not show it.

10 meter: 0.650 kHz low
21 meter: 0.450 kHz low
etc.
It's possible that the FT817 is off frequency. Probably time to send it
back. But before you do, you need to make sure that you measurement
methods are calibrated correctly (although 15kHz is a lot of error).
Have you tried listening to WWV and determining the error from a known
reliable source? Have you validated the frequency measurement on the
frequency counter?

Problem Number 2: There is something wrong with the power output on
SSB compared to AM and CW. When I transmit on AM and CW and set the

Are you injecting tone or noise for SSB? Has the mic gain been reduced?
SSB without any audio has no output power.

Problem Number 3:
This may not be a problem - I might just be doing something wrong -
in adjusting the microphone the manual tells you to dial up the MIC
GAIN menu, then speak and look for increasing and decreasing bars - I
NEVER see any bar despite varying the gain from 0 to 100. I DO hear
the effect of increasing and decreasing gain when I monitor my
transmission, but the radio just does not show it.

The mic gain controls are shown in numbers, not bars. Reset all of the
mic gains to their default 50. Actually I'd suggest thinking about doing
a complete reset on the radio (as indicated in the back of the manual)

For not having power out on SSB and being 15 kHz off, that's not what I
would call "excellent condition"

Two things. Receiver tuning and CW sidetone.

I know from all of my pro audio gear that one of the bigest problems
with DSP gear is latency.
125ms delay is very,very poor.
The SGC processor has some effective algorithms in it and no doubt the
long delay is due to the computation needed. It includes de-noising,
of course, and for voice, formant filtering, whjihc is rathe
reffective. Ther are voice, CW and data presents, and it is also
possible to adjust the stopband edges normally with front panel
controls. All in all, I have no complaint with how it works. And as I
mentioend, I may be able to stop it processing during trnamsissions by
hooking it up to the PTT line.

Now, in the SGC-2000 CLear Speech option (the same circuit) I believe
the DSP is bypoassed for 1. CW and 2. tuning. Obviously this is more
difficult when using a unit externally. Incidentally, it's not
available separately any more, and the lack of FCC Part 15
certification may be part of that. Also, other effective audio DPS
boxes are being sold now that are less costly to build (new
technolgy) and -- more important - cost us less to buy.

I have several Radio Shack DSP boxes, which are an interesting design.
I was at Tandy (doing EMI) when these were conceived and designed, and
the initial design had an 8-bit processor, which almost made
de-noising moot, as they had a higher noise floor than the receiver.
De-noising was never implemented in the RS DSP. But at theprice it is
a useful accessory anyway. I bought two of them for about $40 each
(half price sale) and the last one for $15!

Didn't MFJ sell something like this several years ago? Seems it was
a box abt. 3x2x1 w/male bnc on one side & female on the other with an
on/off switch. I think I remember looking at this, then hearing
about the wideband rx mod for my IC-O2AT & deciding to try that
instead. I'm sure they discontinued it when those darned radio
manufacturers started building in wideband rx. ;)

sounds familiar

No, no. The rig will not overcharge NiCds in the alkaline holder when the
green wire is snipped. On trickle it only puts in 18ma or so.

I had not planned on buying anything, but thirty minutes after I
arrived I got stuck in the crowd around the HRO booth. Next thing
I know I'm at the front of a line, and noticed that they were
selling '817's for $639, and there were just two '817's left in a
stack behind the counter. The guy in front bought one of them and I
immediately lost control, gave them my credit card and took the last
one. Obviously this wasn't the last '817, but at this price it could
have been.
Oh yeah, oh yeah

My only regret is that I've only had enough free time to manage an
hour of operation on 15M since last weekend. But, I've worked two
stations in Cuba and two in Jamaica on SSB from PA, with 2.5W. All
four contacts were 56 or better. What a great little rig! Everyone

Ed,
I forgot to mention I make my living playing music in the studio and I deal with DSP latency day in and
day out. I play on between 400 and 500 recording sessions a year and now days 85% of recording is
digital and 100% of my effects rack is digital.
I pray every night when I go to bed that DSP processor speeds will increase so when I play thru them
everything will feel and sound natural.
As you can see the latency thing is a bug in my bonnet, Hi Hi.
Sorry if I seem like maniac. Someday things will be perfect!

To the post on the guy who asked about not using other AA cells
other
than Alkaline, in the case . This has always been a sales pun from
all manufacturers so you buy their ni-cd packs etc. Just be careful.
If the 817 is used as bought and you charge AA cells externaly you
should never have a problem.

RT Systems have just posted their computer control

for the Icom IC-Q7A and it works pretty well.
Has anyone tried the FT-817 software yet?
It seems the company wants $25 with $5 shipping
up front, with no chance to see what you're getting.

Re: what battery system to buy

John,

Check out the One Plug Power battery system from W4RT Electronics. You can
see it on their website www.w4rt.com This battery pack has a
flush-mounted jack on the battery compartment door (they use Yaesu doors)
which totally isolates the pack and allows charging in 3 hours. You can
even run the rig from the rear deck external power jack with another power
supply (or battery) while you're fast charging the internal pack.

I have never used the internal battery option, always from 12 volts.
I now want to have internal batteries. I been looking at the past

from RS, and live with the long charge time. I could use a 3 amp

works fine, but now I want to be more portable. Thanks, and emails
