Subject: [FT817] Frequency Calibration I just received my FT817 - The radio came in excellent condition and turned on properly, but there were several problems on startup - any fixes for this, aside from sending back? Problem Number 1: On transmitting and receiving I noticed a frequency dependent error in the displayed received, and transmitting frequency. Basically the radio display read LOWER than the actual frequency on both transmit and receive. Using an AOR AR7030, VX5-R and an Optoelectronics Scout frequency counter, I found the followig: 440 Mhz: transmits and receives 15 kHz low (e.g.. to xmit on my local 443.4 rpt, I must enter 443.415) 2 meter: 5 kHz low 10 meter: 0.650 kHz low 21 meter: 0.450 kHz low etc. It's possible that the FT817 is off frequency. Probably time to send it back. But before you do, you need to make sure that you measurement methods are calibrated correctly (although 15kHz is a lot of error). Have you tried listening to WWV and determining the error from a known reliable source? Have you validated the frequency measurement on the frequency counter? Problem Number 2: There is something wrong with the power output on SSB compared to AM and CW. When I transmit on AM and CW and set the meter to read Power Output, the meter behaves as expected, i.e. more bars for higher power and the battery voltage on my gel cell decreases appropriately for high current draw (e.g. goes from 11.9 v to 9.0 volts at high power). HOWEVER on both LSB and USB, the Power meter never shows any bars despite my ramping the power output up and down. Furthermore, the battery voltage only comes down to 11.4 volts implying minimal current draw and minimal power output. I CAN hear myself transmitting (off frequency) on the AR7030, so it does transmit. Are you injecting tone or noise for SSB? Has the mic gain been reduced? SSB without any audio has no output power. Problem Number 3: This may not be a problem - I might just be doing something wrong - in adjusting the microphone the manual tells you to dial up the MIC GAIN menu, then speak and look for increasing and decreasing bars - I NEVER see any bar despite varying the gain from 0 to 100. I DO hear the effect of increasing and decreasing gain when I monitor my transmission, but the radio just does not show it. The mic gain controls are shown in numbers, not bars. Reset all of the mic gains to their default 50. Actually I'd suggest thinking about doing a complete reset on the radio (as indicated in the back of the manual) For not having power out on SSB and being 15 kHz off, that's not what I would call "excellent condition" thanks, Fred Kelcz N9SLR Yahoo!
