Overhead Sawguard Locking Screw
My 975 is from 2006. When I got it ~3 yrs ago I completely disassembled the guard because the nylon screw meant to hold it at desired height did not work and was bent. I ordered new nylon screw and it has been holding but the screw is still getting bent. BTW, this is what my guard looks like:
Here is the nylon screw and the base that it locks against: It just occurred to me that perhaps the gas strut has gone bad. Can anyone with similar guard let me know if they can feel any assist from the strut. This may be hard to tell but worth a shot. I may need to buy a scale to measure lifting force but near I can tell, force to lift feels similar to what I feel when it comes down. Appreciate any feedback anyone can provide. Imran |
Re: Kappa 400 has arrived
Great spec JP! ?That¡¯s about as good as it gets and I think if you¡¯re coughing up for something like a Kappa 400 you may as well get it spec¡¯d well. I¡¯ve gone almost identical to you except 3200 slider but I didn¡¯t order the length compens. I¡¯m really glad to hear that the dust extraction is good. That was my one apprehension.?
I¡¯ve got to second the gratitude towards David B. who has also been of immeasurable help to me in my decision making process.? And also to Lucky who has had to endure an avalanche of emails from me asking for advice all of which he has replied to in great detail which was also been invaluable - thanks mate!?
Lastly, how¡¯s the Vyperchair? They look amazing. It looks like you got the lower model. Is it high enough for workbench stuff??

Re: SCREWS.....
Last year, I was working with someone who used the Hafele Zip-R Screws (Phillips). ?I really liked the way they would self countersink and also liked using them with the Milwaukee M12 SURGE Hydraulic driver (2551-20), which is in my near future.?
For many years, I have used the McFeely's #2 square flathead screws for most things. ?However, it seems that the Zip-R with the self drilling point and the nibs under the head for self-countersinking are superior. ?I did a search here and saw this thread. I am thinking of changing over to them (the #2 square head version). ?If anyone thinks there is a better product or the McFeely's are comparable, I would be interested to know. ?Thanks. |
Re: Kappa 400 has arrived
I will have to second what David just discussed. I bought the third right hand stop and it does not digi compensate. I guess the Felder sales person I delt with did not know this among a few other little things I have discovered. I have had my kappa commissioned twice and neither tech could get it to work. So it got shelved. David sent me his videos on how to get all the stops set up and calibrated and they are perfect and easy to do thanks to him. I do want to add one thing. If you start his process and the settings don't reflect what he shows then the unit is set in German and needs to be set to English it is the last setting in the list "LAN" I believe with 1 for german and 2 for English, or visa versa. So after a year of my third stop collecting dust on the shelf, It is now on my saw and working. Thank you David best for getting me through that issue! Also I am learning a lot more about my machines as time goes on and the issues I have, and will try to answer the best to knowledge , But David B. knows these machines pretty much inside and out and more than the Felder people in some cases. He has been extremely helpful to me helping me out over the years. Thank you David for that. Glen ? Alpine Moulding and Millwork Inc. Mail: ?? P.O. Box 486 ?????????? Re: Kappa 400 has arrived
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI just want to clarify one thing, perhaps specific to JP¡¯s configuration. ?He opted to add the digital crosscut stop with the flipper on the right to his configuration, bringing the total number of crosscut stops to two units on the main fence, along with the digital stop for the telescoping extension. ?In that sense, his configuration is identical to mine as discussed here: ?If you are thinking of ordering a machine with the X-Roll outrigger table and length compensation for the digital stops, there is one aspect you should know that is not documented or well known by the Felder sales team. ?If you order the digital stop with a right-flipper along with the length compensation upgrade, the right-flipper crosscut stop does NOT support length compensation tied into the X-Roll outrigger angle DRO - only the stop with the left-flipper on the main fence extrusion and the digital stop on the telescoping extension will have length compensation. ? This has been thoroughly discussed in the past, but often overlooked. David Best https://www.instagram.com/davidpbest/

Re: How to determine max shaper cut
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý?Thanks Greg and Mac. It is interesting that Rangate recommends a heuristic approach, essentially increasing feed rate till finish suffers and then dialing back feed rate 10% from that point. While it would be interesting to learn if there is a way to calculate/project max depth of cut but since I only have a 3KW (3p) motor, I think it is safe to say that I will run out of HP before taxing the bearings. Re: Kappa 400 has arrived
Michael, forgot to address your last questions. My current planing & thicknessing setup is a Hammer A3-41, but thanks to PK and his videos on the AD941, I decided to order the AD941 with electronic height control and went with 3 phase 7.5hp motor now that I have a Phase Perfect converter. Hopefully it so be arriving next month. Other goodies? well based on advise here I purchased 3 Tenyru 300mm blades, Felder 400mm rip blade and Felder dado blade set. With all of this I am ready to settle down on purchases and get back to finishing up setting up my shop and making sawdust.

Re: Kappa 400 has arrived
Hello Michael, ?my decision process was as I kept adding options to the K700 the pricing kept increasing to the point that it wasn't that much of a stretch to go with the Kappa 400 which gave me features I desired that weren't available on the K700. Also at my age I think this will be my last saw and I really didn't want any regrets. As to final specs attached are photos of the order, the buying process isn't very easy with Felder and they really don't do a good job of listing all the options available. I went with 2800mm slider, all digital crosscut stops, X-Roll for outrigger, Quik Lock and tool compartment for 5 saw blades. I had multiple conversations with my salesman that I wanted the Digi Compensation and was assured that it was included in the options I had chosen. When the Felder Tech was commissioning my saw I asked about the Digi Compensation and he said I didn't have it, he pointed out that my digital crosscut stop and angle display did not have the wording " Digi-compensation with the blue tooth icon in the top left corner of each display. I have called my salesman and included past email were I had discussed having it included, he is going to check into this further and get back to me next week, he said his computer system did not have an option to select to include it. Page 26 of the current catalog discuss the NEW: "digital-compensation plus" but doesn't list it as a machine option for the Kappa 550 or Kappa 400. I spent the day in my shop yesterday and so far I am extremely pleased with the saw as I get more comfortable with all my DRO features and totally like the motorized rip fence controlled by overhead display panel. Also I had some concerns about dust collection on this saw based on reports from several years ago but I am happy to report that I find dust collection quite good on my unit and equal to my expectations.?

Re: How to determine max shaper cut
I am sure there are folks here that can impart some wisdom on this. Reading here and on the net, one thing that comes up is chip load calculation, which is
Chip Load = Feed Rate / (RPM x Z) Z = # of cutting edges For the example in my video this calculation would yield a chip load of (3m/min x 39.37 in/m) / (7800 RPM x 4) = 0.0038¡± This means that each cutting edge is biting?4 thousands of an inch every time it comes in contact with the work piece. I have seen that recommended chip load for hardwood and soft wood is very similar, around 0.02¡±, but this appears to be for end mills. I assume it is different for shaper tooling that has considerable more mass to aid cooling. But how does this relate to the depth of cut. Obviously, the angle of attack is changed with the depth of cut and this is considered in metal work. Before, I dig deeper into understanding this, I thought I ask again for wisdom here. Re: Kappa 400 has arrived
That is a beautiful saw indeed. I ordered a new K700 and I am stoked. I hope it doesn't take 8 months to get.? On a different?note: talking about a blast from the past. I saw his post and had to write. Special shout out to John Renzetti. It's been over 20 years since I was on a Felder owners' group. Hey John, are you still making those great zero clearance inserts? Re: Kappa 400 has arrived
Wow JP,?
You must be stoked!? Funnily enough I've ended up ordering a Kappa 400 X-motion too. It's funny how there's a few of us here that have ended up at the Kappa 400 after initially looking at 700 series machines. What was the decision making process for you to finally go with the Kappa? What was the final spec you went with? It looks like you got the X-roll outrigger (as I have too). Did you get the length compensation? 3.2m slider?? As others have said, your shop looks great.?My workshop will be a similar size to yours I think, but a little smaller. I looks like the saw fits in very nicely.? What is your planing and thicknessing setup? Are there more goodies on the way?? Cheers Michael? |
Re: Fat300 and Material Handling
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýFelder carries some of the Ruwi stuff (the bars and locking mechanisms as well as the swivel top). ?Otherwise, you must order from Europe. ?The carts are not available for export, but the other stuff can be ordered from places like Sauter. ?They wanted an arm and a leg to ship though¡I¡¯ve just designed my own knockoff of the Ruwi top in Fusion 360 and intend to build it using a Parf guide to drill the 20mm holes.
