Re: Joe in New Orleans is selling everything in his shop
When I received my K915 X-Motion the shipping brackets?had broken loose and the?boom was set free to float around and got all scraped up as well as the pieces it?rubbed against. Felder sent me a tube of touch up paint. I've purchased at least 20 new Grizzly machines and never a shipping crate problem. So, stuff happens... ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýTJ,? I completely agree.? My Felder KF700SP was well crated but without the shock and tilt sensors.? Prior to the Felder I had a Sawstop ICS and it was incredibly well packaged with tilt and shock sensors.? Contrast that with Grizz.? Tons of shipping damage with them.? Sounds like they are always good about replacements but it sucks as a customer to eagerly await your machine, possibly take the day off to be there for delivery and they have it damaged.? I am convinced that some manufacturers decide that cheaper packing and eating some damage is cheaper than packing right.? Maybe MBAs there??? ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]>

Re: Zero Clearance Inserts for Hammer K-3
I bought a pair of these back in early June, which means I didn't get the extra screws noted in the video.? That's no big deal though.? I used a 1/8" brad point bit followed by a 1/8" router bit (on a router table) to extend my insert for the riving knife.? I might have to extend it a little further though, as there's barely any room to install the riving knife when dealing with a 12" blade.? I haven't had the need to run with my scoring blade lately, so that section is still covered.
I've installed one insert so far, and the only problem I had was that I had to remove a tiny section on the underside near the front in order to get it to fit properly.? It wouldn't seat correctly otherwise as it was pushing against the little bits they have there on the K3.? That was easily done with a beater chisel.? I haven't looked at the other insert to see if it has the same problem. Separately, I found that I can only remove or install the insert with the sliding table pushed all the way to the rear.? This of course is the opposite of where you put the table when changing the blade.? So if I'm switching out the blade for a dado or for a home-made 45 degree insert then I have to move the table back and forth to go between dealing with the blade and the insert.? That's not the fault of the insert; it's due to the tightness of the space there coupled with the extra "meat" of the insert.? But it's a small inconvenience and easily overlooked thanks to the size and strength of the insert.? I've already broken the little sliver to the left of the blade off an OEM insert; I'll stick with Ramon's inserts from now on. |

Re: AD941 vs. Baileigh JP-1898-NC
Understandable. if its single phase then its 941....
When it comes to machine upgrade I always go a little more than what I need, because it will open up opportunities/doors to other projects.? When I was planning the upgrade for my jp combo, I?was going to purchase a SCM FS7, but I had to wait for 6 months so bought the 951 instead.? I started as a hobbyist as well but now my wood work provides 50% of the household income - I still have a daytime job. and I have 2 casual workers on the weekends to help out.? I recently put down a deposit for a SCM shaper Ti145EP (similar to a Profil 45 but cost slightly more) with side tenon table. it will get here in late November.? |

Steve - quite right I hadn't tested the start capacitor disconnected, I was so excited I popped out at 1am to try it, alas it reads the same, though as you say ESR and leakage could still be apparent
Cliff - also true, sounds like it's worthy path, thanks. Thank you all so far - I'll get new caps and report back! |

Re: The Annex workshop addition
I have a 30+ year old Clark stand up, ride on electric lift. It's very compact and will lift 3500#. I paid $500 for it 5 years ago when we moved from a dock height building to a drive in building. It's 1500# battery immediately took a shit after the move. A rebuilt battery was in the neighborhood of $3K, which we couldn't justify for the occasional use that it sees. Instead, we got 4 Interstate deep cycle 6V batteries and made a tray to mount them on the overhead protection cage. The original battery is critical for ballast so we couldn't remove that and put these relatively lightweight batteries in its place. It will lift my heaviest machines, and all the crated furniture I send out. It makes putting lumber in the rack 16' up pretty easy too. I charge it like every other month maybe, and it always does what I ask of it. It leaks some hydraulic fluid on the floor, but for the $1300 I've got into it, it's long since paid for itself. Maybe I'll get to that leak someday.

Gents,
I really do appreciate all of your advice!? This kind of experience is priceless!? I have been doing woodworking for many years.? Worked in a production custom entry door shop for a while before before I dove into the career.? I am just an enthusiast.? Some day when I retire, this will be my gig.? I have a 20x20 shop at this point dedicated to woodworking.? This is way beyond what I NEED and really over what I should buy.? I really don't have the space for two large machines.? This is a one time tool for me.? One and done.? I am lucky to be able to be a little frivolous with the purchase, so I think I am going to take advantage of this sale. I always wanted to stay with single phase, I know the long term advantage of 3 phase, just not there mentally yet, unless a bargain appeared. Here is what I have now for large machines in this little space (still in remodel mode or I would share pics): CWI 37" double drum sander 7.5hp single phase Laguna TSS (2005) 5hp with scoring (will replace someday with something nicer) Laguna LT16HD bandsaw - keeper Laguna 3hp shaper - so far it is ok...? huge bargain Onieda 3hp Dust gorrila cyclone - keeper (in a separate room next to the 20x20) Nova Voyager drill press - keeper Steel City 8" wedgebed jointer - dear lord this has to go...? some bargains are just headaches Delta 785x 15" jointer with a shelix head - is is good, but has issues with age So:

Re: AD941 vs. Baileigh JP-1898-NC
I originally was going to get the 931 I think it was, and comparing the 931 to the 941, the build was better, table easier to lift and it was 1k more at that time. I am not sure if the 951 was out yet but had to draw the line somewhere. I was told by David B and others back then to get separates if possible and I did not. I should have listened and did not.. I seriously regret not doing so now. I can assure you that there is a stand alone planer very near in my future. I stepped up in machines from where I started looking at the entry level Felders. I believe it was the KF700 and ended up with a Kappa 400 and the profil 45. It was A big step up , but I knew enough not to go cheap and regret it. That being said I am very happy with the machines including the 941, And yes I have some issues but I am going to put a lot of that on the operator. I haven't done much programming and presetting up cutterheads and blades yet but I think I did it a few times and just can't remember what I did. Bottom line is buy what you really want, You only cut that check once. Or maybe end up disappointed in your choices. I am in that case for not getting separates as I was advised to do. Glen One more thing, Don't gloss over the options while some are not cheap some are. There were a lot of options that I really thought I did not need but turned out that are great to have. Also Felder does do a preset machine build with a lot preset options lower than the cost of said machine and added options. The machine is not actually built so you can add more stuff if you want. That was the path I took and added to and was a better price had I started from scratch. Alpine Moulding and Millwork Inc. Mail: ?? P.O. Box 257 ??????????
