Re: OT: Teknatools USA affiliate (maker of Nova drill presses) files for CH 11 reorganization

So......
?
I wanted to have a mobile base for my drill press to be able to move it around. Nova explicitly recommends against this in their manuals¡ªunderstandably, due to center of gravity, top-heaviness, and tipping risks. I still wanted the drill press to be mobile so I went with the and I took some extra steps to make it stable and as safe as possible.
?
I opened the base fully to maximize its surface area¡ªthis makes it a lot more difficult to tip the drill press over. I then made a very rigid, stable platform for it using an inner frame of aluminum extrusions and sandwiched that between two plywood sheets and bolted the whole platform to the spider base. I then mounted the drill press column onto the platform. See pic below. This has worked out great - it's easy to move the drill press around and the whole thing is super stable. If you¡¯re wondering whether I snapped something because the whole thing toppled¡ªrest easy, that¡¯s not what happened. The challenge I had after mounting the column to the platform in this way was that I had to cantilever a lot across the platform with the drill press head in my hand while trying to mount it and there was no way my back could support that heavy load so far away from my core. I tried it with the help of a friend and that didn't work either.?
?
?
So, I decided to use a crane to help. The drill press head doesn't really have great attachment points that I could think of. It is tiny and heavy. I built a cage for it using 2x4s and hoisted the head inside that.
?
?
Although, I had planned the drill press head to be fully captured inside the cage, it didn't go exactly as planned. The drill press head moved a bit and took a lot of pressure on the speed knob, which then snapped off. There's a small rotary encoder board behind the face that has a rotary encoder with a D-shaft and that's what snapped off. . Teknatool sent instructions on how to take the face off and examine the part, remove it etc. with photographs of the process - so it was pretty straight forward.?
?
?
Hopefully that¡¯s the last hiccup, but time will tell. I¡¯ve been slowly chipping away at the setup after my day job, bit by bit.

Can you share a pic of what you snapped? Just be good for other owners to watch out.

BTW, I was able just pull the column down and rest it on the edge of the foam and add the base. I am a slight guy and was able to lift the head up and go vertical. Obviously, each has to make sure of their capabilities. I certainly would not try to install the head on the stood up column unless I have help

I also did not want to take the head off as I thought there may be some factory calibration as there are set screws, which could be just for locking. Does anyone know, in general, can the DP head be removed and installed without loosing calibration between the chuck and the table?

Sorry Wade for the name spelling, I hate this autocorrect
Mike no problem.

Re: OT: Teknatools USA affiliate (maker of Nova drill presses) files for CH 11 reorganization

Solberga is an excellent drill press! The geared head will last forever but probably overkill for woodworking. However if anyone wanted one, let me know and I can sell you one at a discount off list price.?

Re: Feedback on the sliding saw selection

Stan, sorry to hear that. I had the exact same experience two years ago. They used long screws for thin material so I had a ton of scratches all down the main surface of the slider.
?
After much back and forth, along with some help from David Best, I was able to get them to pony up for it. They offered me a replacement slider (with 8 month lead time, at the time) or a partial refund. I opted for the refund since it was only cosmetic and didn¡¯t impact the function. I¡¯m using this saw in a commercial shop so it¡¯s bound to get scratched up further. I put those funds towards a set of Mac clamps.
?
I hope they get this sorted for you quickly. Happy to lend some advice in any way I can.

Hi Natanel. I¡¯m going to withdraw my request for two improved T-nuts.?
Looks like a great deal, but I¡¯ve since made the F& F jig and that works well enough for my uses.?

Re: Feedback on the sliding saw selection

Stan, don't accept this and they should replace the table and don't let them tell you to pursue damages through the shipping company.? Out of the 5 machines I ordered all arrived in perfect condition except for the slider which arrived in that long crated box and the crating was badly damaged by the shipping process - I took copious pictures but luckily the slider was undamaged.? For the price, Felder needs to beef up their packaging to more accurately reflect what really happens to those crates across intermodal shipping methods.

Re: Feedback on the sliding saw selection

I have a K500 I bought secondhand from a guy who couldn't wait to get a Sawstop. It's a short stroke.? I can't crosscut 4x8 panels on it but I do find it useful.? The 50" fence is mostly a hassle for me since I never use the full capacity.? ?I move the saw with a? pallet jack often.? I've never had it lose accuracy from that.? It has a square cabinet.?
?
I have other ways of ripping and crosscuting full sheets and my shop is only about 420 sq ft and I have a lot of tools and machines so even if I wanted to use the Felder for full sheets I would have to move other stuff to do it.?
?
The main annoyance of the short stroke for me is I have to take the fence off and replace it often, which takes about a minute each operation.? ?This is because the fence being there limite how far you can pull it out of the way for ripping.
?
I was a pro. I have stuff hobbyists wouldn't be interested in.? Those machines take up lots of space.? I may start another business in the future so I'm holding onto the big machines.??
?
One thing that has been known to happen on long stroke sliders used in pro shops for a lot of short stroke cutting is they can develop a wear pattern in the sliding component from it.? Some shops with a vertical and/or CNC to may have been doing that with a big slider for years.? If you buy a secondhand slider that's something to consider.

Re: Salt Lake City

Jim, as an alternative do you have a narrow palette jack as that is the best way to get that machine off a pallet with a plywood ramp.

Re: Feedback on the sliding saw selection

I agree with David. ?It's a hard lesson, but the only way Felder will get the message is if the customer refuses to accept poor service. ?If the show room piece was all scratched up, none of us would be interested unless they offered a significant discount. ?And some of us would not be interested in a cosmetically damaged saw, regardless of the price. ?New is new. ?And the incompetence of their packaging people is not the fault of the customer.
?
Demand a replacement table, and strongly suggest they commission the replacement table at their expense.
?
That's my two cents worth.

Seven have apparently missed the target, but one did not and left a beautiful, deep gash right in the first quarter of the nine foot table.

Netanel,

Quick name correction, it¡¯s spelled Wade. ??

Did you see the pictures I posted to you a while back from David¡¯s Flickr account regarding the flip lever. ?It¡¯s far superior to the original junk Felder gave us! ?He outlines the benefits very well. ?If I had an opportunity to get one I wouldn¡¯t pass it up. ?For someone like me who uses this smaller crosscut fence often, it would be a nice upgrade to have. ?

Thx,

Hi Wedge,
?
sorry, I missed your question.
currently it looks like we have only 2 people who are interested in the two machines configuration (that has upgraded flip lever).
I would need to ask the metal shop what is the cost of making 4-5 of those flip stops.
I initially enquired about a minimum of 20 flip stops (assuming at least 10 will be 2-machine)

Having said that, is there any specific reason you want the flip stop? I don¡¯t really see an advantage with a single machine?

I sure hope they take better care of the product in Sacramento than in Dallas. Good luck Rohit.

Re: Feedback on the sliding saw selection

Oh I am definitely not going to let that.... slide.

Upon opening the main pallet I discovered that the xcut fence was not secured to the chassis so I now have a scratched chassis (whatever) and potential issue with the fence (attached). Does this look bad? I do not know if the bottom surface is supposed to be machined or just an aluminum extrusion I could buff out.

Re: Shaper Power Feeder Issues

Thank you all for the advice and pointers and saving me from more frustration!

Managed to eliminate the snipe by pulling the outfeed fence forward by around 1/16" (had to play around with this) and adjusting the power feeder.??

On the next project will look into making the outboard fence and I actually did look into the shaper class out in Colorado...someday!
