Re: Thoughts on Automatic Dovetailers?

Well I just made some dovetails with the Northtech.? Looks like I will be keeping her.? It was dialed in for 16mm thick sides and fronts.
?
Sorry to have wasted any of your time!? It took 5 seconds to make a 5" drawer side.
?
Now I just have to get my lengths figured out.

Re: How to connect a 400-800 Morticing unit to a Felder BF6-31

Hi Davide,
? You can adjust the height of the mortiser on the stand with a bolt that goes through a slot in the back of the stand (see photo)
?
?
Here are some photos of part 71 with the lever attached. There is a cam at the end and two rounded slots that a spring loaded ball bearing fit into to hold the lever in the up position while the mortiser is slid into place.?

?
Hope This Helps,

Re: DRO on a shaper fence?

Imran,?

I've learned over time that play in the hood (or other devices where backlash play is an issue) is best handled by always engaging the the final movement "toward the action". On the F700, I recall also lock-down clamps slightly dragging for fine tuning before locking down fully.?

The DRO in Brian's photos was for my machine (which I have since sold). It worked better than I expected, reliably. Alternatively, a creative application of Lamb Tool Works parallel guides might be a better use of funds that would also add versatility for other purposes including being able to offset split fences for infeed/outfeed and use for adjusting and aligning outboard fence contraptions, bonus points for mounting to Aigner? rails bolted to shaper table edges.

I was just looking at Brian's photos, and that looks like a way better way of doing it. (Might have to find the time and copy it) I am not concerned with whether the DRO reads the same or not when remounting the hood though, as i primarily use the DRO by zeroing it in to a particular projection of the cutterhead, then adjusting the hood according to that. I don't use it everytime i use the shaper, but when i do use it, it does make setup faster than without it.

It is - took about a half a day to get it all set up, but I haven¡¯t touched it since and now dovetails take me like no time whatsoever. The 650 is not automatic, though you just move with your hand.

Re: How to connect a 400-800 Morticing unit to a Felder BF6-31

Dear Felder friends,
?
I have managed to get hold of nearly all the missing parts from Felder to revive the old 400-800 morticing unit and attach it to my beloved BF6-31, but it seems they no longer stock one critical part, the rods that lock the morticer to the unit (part 71 on the attached numbered parts diagram for the series 7 machine, but same parts), and they are unable (or unwilling) to send me drawings or dimensions of these parts. I wonder if any of you have these locking rods connected to the locking handles, and whether you would be so kind as to take some photos and possibly measure some of the critical dimensions so that I can see if I can have them made at a local machine shop.
?
Another mystery I have not solved is that the stand (75) appears to be too tall to slide under the morticing unit when mounted, and hence is not helpful in moving it into place to attach to the machine. When next to the machine the rod 66 is supposed to line up with the upper hole in the morticer 4, but the stand 75 is higher than the rod and hence I cannot slide it into place no matter how I raise or lower the morticer relative to the stand. If anybody has any ideas I would be most grateful.?
?
Please note that the diagram they have sent me is for connecting to a series 7 machine, I attach the diagram for the series 6 machine but the individual parts are not all labelled on it so it is harder to explain the issues.
?
Thank you so much for your help!
?

????? What a great topic and I've asked those same questions myself. I often just use biscuits to join drawers together in certain circumstances. I have also found that if I make drawers myself, they do come out more square than if I go to a cheap company like Decorative Specialties and buy their dovetail drawers. But if I buy them from Deco or DBS ( a better quality LA area company) I do hate the wait and the raft of cardboard, plastic wrap and the wood pallet that I have to get rid of. Sometimes I get them to take the pallet if I can unwrap them quickly. I do have a Porter Cable jig and my first attempt at using it with Baltic birch ply was a disaster. I think it would have gone better if I was using 5/8" material and some other improvements. The other problems were my fault. There is a local company here that I'm sure makes great drawers, but the price is way more than other companies. Having said that, I'm just starting a large kitchen and whole house project and I'm thinking about trying them as the budget will allow it. I have also thought about getting a dedicated dovetail machine like a Grizzly, but I definitely have fears that it would be a mistake. I'm very curious to hear what others are doing.? Tom Ruth

Re: Thoughts on Automatic Dovetailers?

Now you can make 10 degree variable spaced through-dovetails, 3/8" and 3/4" box joints using PantoRouter with new ULTRA-SHEAR router bits made by Woodpeckers .

It is faster and easier, the result is really impressive.

All great points.? All three of those machines ain't cheap and they take up floor space too!?

The Barth Multipress can make for a box clamp/clamp wall/door clamp and face frame clamp.? Those Barth accessories sure do add up though. And the wall takes up some serious space too.

Re: Thoughts on Automatic Dovetailers?

Hey PK:
I have the Leigh dovetail jig as well as a Pantorouter that allows me to make dovetail drawers. This is fine for the occasional small batch of drawers when I am not crushed on time. For larger projects, I outsource my drawers to a local supplier that is close enough for me to pick up, so i save a ton on shipping. I pay about $40 per drawer depending on size, including finishing, and notching for Blum undermount slides. I just build the cost into my pricing. If I were churning out drawers on a regular basis I would consider (and have considered) a dedicated unit. Keep in mind if you're in this camp where speed/efficiency is your reason for going the dedicated route, you would also benefit from a drawer clamp and notcher to keep up with the part production -- and either of those units ain't cheap.

If there is any chance (and there is ALWAYS a chance when writing manuals or instructional guides) that the reader is going to miss an important point and you have placed special emphasis on that point, a simple explanation i.e. "Doing so will create a dwarf black hole in your shop that all of your most expensive tools will fall into" is worthwhile, and oftentimes, necessary.

I have plans but not done it yet. So, interested in seeing as well.

I have some concerns about repeatability as there is some play in the fence - significant when measuring at 0.001¡± scale. This does not show on the micro adjust as the hood and the micro adjust move together.

Still want to try it as I don¡¯t like walking around to see the micro adjust scale and splitting lines.
