Re: Wax/oil finishes

Check and see if your dog/dogs have a UTI, that looks like urine dribble to me. I have all tile in the house and when one of my dogs gets a UTI, that's what it looks like... fortunately it scrubs right up off the tile, we use a steam cleaner to clean the floors, so just water turned into steam.

I do not know what is staining the floor. My guess is drool from a dog. There are several locations now that have these spots. In the darker boards the spots are not as pronounced.
?
I’ve used nothing but Rubin’s special soap on the floor. The soap does not affect the spots at all.
?
The product is a blend of 2/3 “Pure” and 1/3 “Dark Oak”

I will reach out to the installer for recommendations.?

Re: Wax/oil finishes

Hi John,?
?
I'm curious what is causing the staining on your floors??
?
We bought our home in 2018, a 1952 ranch home in rough shape. I pulled up most of the main level floors, screwed down the subfloor to reduce squeaks, then installed 1.5" Red Oak flooring, rift and quartered. It took me a long time performing the work on evenings and weekends but I think it came out nicely in the end.?
?
For finish, I used Rubio "Pure". That was in 2020, and I think I'm due for a cleaning and reapplication, mostly due to the schmutz (oils, dust/dirt, etc...) which have accumulated on the traffic areas. In the mean time, I think the surface has held up quite well, particularly with our 2-3 cats who have a habit of barfing on the floor. If the barf has sitting on the floor overnight sometimes there will be a distinct black ring around the perimeter, but some vigorous buffing with the Rubio cleaning agent seems to make the stains disappear.?
?
On the advice of my local flooring shop, I bought an buffer to maintain the floor. The instructions were to use a brown (rather aggressive) buffing pad with the Rubio cleaning product to thoroughly clean the floor, let dry, apply the Rubio "Pure", then buff off with a white pad.?
?
Something I haven't seen discussed yet are the supplementary Rubio products. I forget all of the ins- and outs-, but the advice from my supplier was to continue using the Oil Plus 2C as a maintenance product. The reason here is that some of the maintenance products preclude going back to the 2C product. So, if a user is using the "Pure" or other relatively untinted products, then the maintenance oils are probably ok. However, if you're using a heavily tinted 2C oil, then using one of the maintenance oils might preclude you from maintaining the color over time. Again, I forget the specific details, other than the high level message to just stick with the 2C oils if at all possible....?

Hi John:

?

Thanks for the inquiry and I’m sorry you’re struggling with stain resistance. My article was recently published in Australian Wood Review Issue 124 which is available for purchase at

?

Or at this specific link:

?

If the link does not work, I simply Googled “Zinio Australian Wood Review Issue 124”. It is a very extensive article and totally sh$ts on the recent Fine Woodworking review on a similar topic (in my not so humble opinion).

?

I did look at the durability of the tested oils but I may not have covered your specific problem. What are you having trouble with?

?

To elaborate, I performed three specific tests, using water, acetone and red wine. For each test, I added a set amount of product on the surface of each hardwax oil (including Rubio), and then carefully cleaned the surfaces after 24 hours and visually examined the results. I did this for each of the three application methods and across two species (roll, brush and pad/buff, on both softwood and hardwood), although Rubio really only likes to be buffed out according to instructions. It was pretty much the strongest performer, alongside Fiddes Hard Wax Oil.

?

Rubio was ‘waterproof’ in that a puddle of water for 24 hours left behind zero damage. No marks, no blushing or haze, nothing. Rubio was also largely unaffected by the red wine puddle (also left for 24 hours). I say ‘largely’ because there was a strange yellowing effect from the red wine on the softwood samples (kauri pine). Rubio suffered the yellowing alongside all other oils tested except for Odie’s Oil. I could not explain that result. And finally, I did an acetone puddle test. Obviously the acetone evaporated quickly but I flooded sample areas for 15 minutes and then left the samples for 24 hours, cleaned the surfaces and inspected. Rubio, along with several other products, was completely unaffected. I was surprised by this. While I like Livos and Osmo hardwax oils for other reasons, acetone completely destroyed those samples.

?

If you’re struggling with water, red wine or acetone (are you putting on toe polish again John?) ?, then I’d say something is wrong with the application process. But you may be struggling with something else.

?

Do tell. Otherwise, there are so many knowledgeable people here and some of them use Rubio and may have more insight.

Warm regards,

Lucky

Lucky,

?

What became of your article on Hardwax Oils? Was it published, and is there a way to acquire a copy?

?

Did you investigate stain resistance? I’m having issues with stains on my new floors with the Rubio product.

I was able to get copies of everything I needed after providing Felder with the serial numbers of my "new" machines. Makes a big difference having actual documentation.

Hi Mike,

Maybe I was not clear. My experience is same as yours. On occasion I get double increment but normally it works fine. I much rather have it than not but I can also understand one’s frustration who paid $2K for the feature which is not perfect.

I have PowerDrive on a ~2021 KF700S. I'm glad I spent the money. It's especially useful for setting the shaper. I keep a log of where I set various knives and go back to the setting next time. From there, I micro-adjust. It's also handy if forgot something and need to go back to the saw. I drop the shaper and bring it back up to the same exact location.

The controls must be different that Imran's: There's a knob for up/down that accelerates as you hold it. There's also a push-button to creep up on an exact height. Admittedly, the button may occassionally skip by 10 thousandths, but if you demand the accuracy you can get to the 5 thousandths location in a couple tries.
?
Note: I remember the directions for calibrating the saw height being either cryptic or incorrect.

Re: Upgrading slider

I have the hand wheel on my K700S, and that is not very convenient either. I find myself either walking around the end of the slider to get to it, or leaning over the slider to reach it. If the rip fence is within a few inches of the blade the lock lever of the fence is in the way. Lastly the hand wheel does not secure to the machine, and it took me a while to learn how to spin the hand wheel without it coming off in my hand.
?
i have a new saw on order, with X-Motion. I’m curious to see how that works out.

I don’t think there is any reason to replace the telescope fence. It is a sticky tape that is glued. When I removed the imperial tape, there weren’t any glue residue from the old tape.?
The only problematic thing is once the new tape touches the fence, it is irreversible.

For me Felder sent two of those tapes since the first time I put it in, it was too far into the stop, and I was 0.8mm off (when the stop at the edge.?

Okay, things have changed. Mine has both scales. I would ask Felder to swap the telescoping part if machine comes with wrong scale.

Yes, the telescoping fence scale is permanent. It is not a replaceable scale because both metric and imperial are there. My saw is old, unless things have changed, it is an option so really not something to gripe about.

Are you sure about glued scale? How would one align?

I have KF700 and K975, neither with glued scale.

Same experience for me, I ordered metric and got imperial. Felder shipped both replacement scales. Easy to install the rip fence scale, but the crosscut is a bit trickier as it is glued and is quite rigid.

Re: Upgrading slider

i got the replacement scale and installing them was relatively easy.
