Re: Does this look like a dead capacitor?

Mike,

Just curious, does your capacitor has a bleed resistor attached (can't tell from picture)?? This just reminds me of my DIY revamp of my house's AC/condenser units.? Those start capacitors needed bleed resistors.??

Hi Mike,
?
Look for a 80uF 400 or 450VAC 60Hz start capacitor in same case size or if you have room you may be able to accommodate a slightly diff case. Most likely it would be polypropylene film cap but verify just to be sure.

40/085/21 is the test standard original cap went thru and you likely will find same/similar on the replacement but personally I do not think it is critical especially if you have the machine in a climate control area or like mine where environment is not extreme.

I recently tried to find one for my grinder and could not find it in same case size so I used one on hand instead. What I had was rectangular as opposed to cylindrical but it fit the space. So you may have to hunt around a bit.

Re: Ceiling mounted overhead guard #diy

Eric,

I was thinking about something similar. I am currently using a simple jig for cutting tenons (and also for resawing on the table saw). It is not exactly dead on accurate, but at least for larger tenons it does the job well enough.?I was looking into getting a large groove cutter, in order to cut tenons on the shaper instead, but I hardly couldn't find anything with enough depth of cut and fixed width. There are 250mm groove cutters with 100mm depth of cut but variable width and thus rather expensive. Which is the Rangate blade you are referring to?

My shop is a bit on the small side, with about 21m2/230sqft. I attached a few photos. I just moved around some stuff, the A3 switched places with the table, so the hand tools appear a bit displaced. Next steps are to build a proper work bench and to get an HS-950 and a band saw. Right now the kids got a better workbench than I do :o).

Best,
Michael

Re: Questions for users of ??Euro groomers??

As another hobbyist, I use a dado stack. I do not use it often, and so the set-up is not particularly onerous.

I use a dial adjusting Freud model, so I do not have to fiddle with shims to tune the width.

I probably use it more for tenon cheeks than for actual dados. It works quite well.

Michael,?
nicely done, as the whole shop appears to be. WRT Lucky's comment on Z - axis ( cutting into endgrain on longer pieces) I was having a far too large scrap rate- then I got the Rangate saw blade for my shaper and, Mac- clamped to the slider, it's far more accurate and repeatable. Only downside is depth of cut.

I have dado stacks, but I hate setup changeovers. As such, dado stack is last choice cutting notches. I prefer shaper tooling infinitely more. But I also consider an adjustable groover among the basic family of shaper tooling anyways - if you don't get one now, you will get one later.

Re: Electrical question[FOG] Finally found and purchased my Kundig wide belt sander

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

The Kundig Manual is not super helpful.? The seller gave me three copies on the manual and all three have different specs for electrical.? One is in a college theme paper binder and it seems to have the most complete specs but it too is confusing.

?

  • ¡°Connected load¡± = 130A at 230V? (connected load is supposed to be the FLA for all motors).? The machine has a 25HP main motor, 1HP feed motor and 1HP height adjust motor.? Does not seem like these three could get to 130A.
  • ¡°Required Fuse¡± = 63A
  • ¡°Power Cable Size = 6 AWG

?

I have not looked at the motor plate on the 25HP machine but google says 25HP motors @ 230V draw 68A.? Plus the feed motor.? Seems odd that Kundig would spec 6AWG which has a max of around 65A.

?

The original owner had a licensed electrician wire his machine and they wired it with 2 AWG wire which looks like it was sized for 130A as that¡¯s the max spec for 2 AWG copper.?

?

There was about 35 feet of 2 AWG copper already wired to the machine.? So I decided to extend that with 2AWG and I used a 100A breaker which I found in one guide as the right size for a 25HP 230V 3 phase motor.

?

The dust collection specs make no sense either.? The machine has a 7¡± port and the manual says it needs 2700 cfm and an air speed of 4500 ft per min.? The mechanical engineer in me wanted to dig into that.? The math is pretty simple.? With a port there is direct relationship between CFM and velocity.? For a 7¡± port:

  • 4500 ft per min velocity equates to 4810.56 cu ft/ min
  • 2700 cu ft/min equates to 2525.69 ft per min velocity

On the road so can¡¯t send pics.? 25HP 3 phase machine.? Was wired at sellers shop with three 2 AWG copper conductors and a smaller gauge ground wire.? He had it wired to a knife switch was connected to a VFD.? I kept the wire he had from the sander the knife switch, about 30 ft.? I would like to use that wire but I need 40-45 ft to my breaker panel to go up to the ceiling, across and down.? The wire will run in steel conduit.? I am assuming I can have a junction box to extend the existing 30 ft of wire to reach my breaker panel.

?

Questions:

  1. I think you need a disconnect for the machine.? Does the factory Kundig euro rotary disconnect meet the code requirement or must I add disconnect near the machine?
  2. Any issue with a junction box to extend the wire?

If your 2 AWG wire that came with the machine is copper, then you can use a 100 amp circuit breaker with it.

?

?

If you want to run 6 AWG copper, then the circuit breaker should be 50 amp.? ?Since you already have the 2 AWG wire, I would go that route.

?

question 4 seems like a NO answer,? ?Just put the 100 amp circuit breaker in the panel and connect the 2 AWG wire to it.? ?Is the 2 AWG wire 2/2?? ?Meaning a white, black and bare wire in the group?

I don't know anything about Euro disconnects.? ?So question 3 is unanswered here.

The Kundig is now safely in my shop.? As to wiring and breaker size, I am confused.

?

There are three different current specs in the manual and machine data plate.

  • The machine plate says 86A at 230V
  • The spec sheet says ¡°connected load 130 amps at 230V¡±
  • ¡°Required fuse 63 amps at 230V¡±?

The seller had an electrician wire it to his rotary phase converter and they used 2 gauge copper.? I think the manual said to use 6 AWG.

?

Questions:

  1. What size breaker should I order??
  2. What wire gauge should I run?
  3. There is a euro disconnect on the machine, does that meet US code?? The machine is about 30 feet from the breaker panel.
  4. There is about a bit more than 30 feet of 2 gauge wire that came connected to the machine.? I assume it¡¯s ok per code to put a pull box and have a junction there so I can use the existing wire and just add to it to reach the panel?

On dust collection the spec sheet does not make much sense.? The machine has a 7¡± duct.? The spec sheet says 2700 cfm and 4500 fpm.? But when you do the math, with a 7¡± duct and 4500 fpm you get 1200 cfm.? Or for 2700 cfm you would need over 10,000 fpm.? Clearly wrong.? Prior owner had a 5HP Oneida with about 50 ft of duct and no issues.? My collector will pull 4500 fpm on a 7¡± duct? at the machine.

?

The machine plate says 86A at 230V

?

The spec sheet says ¡°connected load 130 amps at 230V¡±? but it also says ¡°Required fuse 63 amps at 230V¡±?

The motor is 25HP.? I do not yet have the machine in the shop so I don¡¯t have the motor electrical data.? There is also a 1HP feed motor and a 1HP table height adjust motor.

The machine is in a workshop with a gravel driveway (rigger needs the right forklift) and at my shop we have 120 feet of pavers.? Estimate to pick up and deliver and place in shop is right at $1000.?
