Re: Shaper Power Feeder Issues

A false/continuous/sacrificial fence only (generally) works on a partial profile cut.? On a full profile cut, the outfeed needs to be offset the same as the depth of cut.?

You would need a stepped board, or a shim/packing attached to the outfeed.? There is a method of partially feeding a board into the planer, where the DOC on the board matches the depth of the shaper cut, resulting in the step needed for the continuous fence.?

In practice the outboard fence is faster, unless you have a lot of different widths for the stock being?used.

Re: Shaper Power Feeder Issues

Thanks fellas for the responses and some observations/questions:
?
1.? I am making full depth cuts resulting in the material being 1/16" less wide than when started and did NOT make any adjustments to the outboard fence to accommodate for this.? I will pull the outboard fence forward to see if this helps.
?
2.? Along with the above, will reorient the feeder with greater focus on the outfield side.
?
3.? I like the idea of the sacrificial fence as would eliminate any material being sucked into the cutter area.? Will this work given that ending width is 1/16" less than the original?
?
Thanks again!!!

I also had this problem, and spent a lot of time getting the fence coplanar, but the problem still persisted. For me the cause was very slight bowing in longer pieces causing the trailing edge to drop in once leaving the indeed fence.

Better timber prep/conditioning/storage solved the problem for me, but a sacrificial fence would have prevented the snipe

You can try a combination of things to correct this:

1 - Reorient your power feeder so that it drives the material against the outfield fence with better control as Jared suggested
2 - Stagger the outfeed fence forward as Joe recommended if your profiling cutter is taking a full-depth cut that leaves the resulting material less wide than it started.
3 - Add a pressure module or featherboard that pushes the material coming off the cutter against the outfeed fence. ?Like the following - or sho-made featherboard clamped to the sliding table):

But for full profile cuts like this, a more stable setup is to run the material against a back fence (sometimes called an outboard fence). ?You can make your own out of a scrap of plywood, and fellow FOG member Steve Rowe has a YouTube video discussing this: ?.?

I’ve also posted about this in this series: ?

Salt Lake City

Hello All,
Do any of you live in or near Salt Lake City? Do you also happen to have a jointer/planer with the mobility kit?? If so, I have a very odd request. Could I borrow your lifting lever for a day?
It comes with the mobility kit except for the lifting lever. I'm in the process of trying to buy just a lever from Felder but in the mean time, I would love to borrow a lever just to get it off the pallet when it arrives.
I know the chances of this are tiny...
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Shaper Power Feeder Issues

Looks to me the fault is in the fence setup. Snipe at the end usually indicates the outfeed fence has to move forward. To use the split fence effectively requires tuning the fences to a high degree. If you don’t go through the process of this the outboard fence is a better solution as Jarred suggests.

Re: Shaper Power Feeder Issues

You can try more toe in on the feeder and swapping to poly wheels would possibly help. Alternatively I rarely run sticking against the main fence, and almost always use a outboard fence for a full profile edge cut. It just works better.

Re: Veneering Advice Sought

David, I used Unibond 800 for most of my veneering work. There are various colors of powder to mix with the glue. For example darker colors for darker wood, etc.
?
Here is are acouple of photos of a kitchen I did quite a few years ago in lacewood veneer and lightweight MDF.? A vacumm press is pretty much mandatory when laminating large surfaces. Also is the norm to match the thickness and hardness of the veneer on the reverse side to keep the panels from warping. The rule is to always have an odd number of veneers to make up any lamination. For example, core is MDF, top veneer and back veneer equals 3 pieces.

I am interested in seeing the saw next week if it still available.? I plan to be in Seattle on Monday.? Would late afternoon work?? If so, please give me your address and phone.

Hello, I am in the middle of selling things and have been taking some items apart to make it easier to pack for shipping. I found this on the ground and am trying to identify what thing it goes to so I can put it in the proper box.

It is about 24.8mm x 35.5mm at the outer curves and about 1mm thinck with a small solid round cylinder in the middle. The cylinder must fit into a hole in order to keep it in place.

Your help is much appreciated. John

Could it go to the parallel guide on the end that goes into the fence? I already boxed up the fence rod exstension rod inside.? I took everything apart and put the pieces in a baggie.
