Minwax Wood Hardener is worth a try. Works well in my experience on mdf.

Maybe add one more melamine board with edge sealed (epoxy) underneath.

Hi Folks,
??? I need some advice.? I've been working on making a vacuum
press table.? I put together a torsion box and attached a melamine
top to it.? I CNC cut channels in the melamine to allow the vacuum
to flow.? What I had not adequately considered was how porous the
particle board is.? My vacuum pump is running continuously, and
while the plastic sucks down, I never get over 1" of mercury.? It
seems a lot of the issue is just the airflow through the particle
board.? Any recommendations on the best way to seal the exposed
edges of the melamine and the grooves in the top?
??? Some of the stuff I've seen online has suggested oil-based
poly.? Other suggestions have included glue (all types), and
Gorilla spray sealant.? Thoughts?
??? Note:? The photo below doesn't show the gasketing (applied to
the melamine in two concentric rings that align with the
extrusion) or the polyurethane vacuum bag (applied to the
extrusion).
