It's my understanding that the melamine will seal the faces, and if you use the plastic heat glue edge banding that will seal the edge. Then all you have to do is seal the slots that penetrate the face... I've heard Zinzer primer and then any latex paint.?

Perhaps shellac? It is fast and relatively inexpensive, and easy to apply. It is compatible with most other finishes, so if does not do what you want you can try something else without removing the shellac.
