Re: Thinking of a combo machine #hammer #whatmachinetobuy

Hi Bob:

What an insightful post. I love asking the ¡°why¡± whether of politics, religion, family, woodworking, etc.?

The ¡°why¡± reveals the basis of decisions/views and often exposes assumptions that inform (or not) those decisions/views. The ¡°why¡± also allows for a more accurate application of opinions to different contexts.?

I have separates except for the Dual 51. But your explanation of why you can tolerate your combo positioned 14¡± off the wall makes excellent sense. And I agree that the pallet jack is the way to go, because it is so quick and easy.

Thanks!

Warm regards,
Lucky

I have a Hammer C3 41 and like it. I want to clarify one minor (major?) issue about the fence. On the C3 41, the table saw and the jointer do NOT share a rip fence. There is a dedicated table saw rip fence and a separate dedicated jointer rip fence. I believe there is a shared fence on the C3 31.??

With regard to all the fuss about change over and so forth, I'll say that I don't find it to be a major issue.? I have two shops. A 2000 square foot professional furniture making shop, with all separate machines (a 10 foot slider, 24" planer, and so forth). My smaller space is a 200 square foot sculpture studio, and that's where I have the C3 41.? So I have it "both ways": I have all separates in one space, and all combo in the other.? If I had all the space I needed in the smaller studio, I probably would go with separates, but there simply isn't the space to allow.? Anyway, I really don't feel like I'm sacrificing much in the way of convenience, especially when consider that there is no way I could fit separates in that space.?

One thing that's really helped in the small space is that I opted to buy a pallet jack to move the C3, instead of the Hammer mobility kit. That mobility kit is difficult to move things with, where the pallet jack is a breeze.? I agree that one of the drawbacks of a combo machine is the need to have access on all sides. I find that the vast majority of my time, I only really am using the slider (not the jointer or planer). So I leave the jointer side butted up close to the wall (about 14" away from the wall).? If I have a small "one off" piece that needs jointing, that 14" space lets me slip in and joint it. If I have anything more than that, I simply jack up my pallet jack, pull the machine out, and do my work.? Then I push it back in place. Easy as pie.

You're doing the right thing. Ask a lot of people a lot of questions. Find out WHY they like what they like and WHY they don't like what they don't like.? There's no single "best way" and no single "right way".? Each person has their own unique circumstances.? ?Let us know what you decide!
