I used the 250lb strut, did you try to compress it with a Bessey parallel face clamp, the one that look similar to this:
Mine are older K-body clamps, but same idea. Stretch the clamp over the ends, slide it tight with the screw all the way out, then tighten as much as you can get with the travel of the screw.
As for where to mount the bottom bracket, tilt the upper portion to figure out where it¡¯s the highest, bolt on the strut, mark the bottom bracket holes and then move up a 1/2¡± to 3/4¡± with the holes and you are good.

It's a big lift, the homebrew version of the felder bracket. My machine is too old for the felder version.?
I'm thinking I have the bracket too high and that my spring my by oversized. I have a 250lb force spring, but I have light weight feeder that only weighs 31 pounds (plus the weight of the post assembly).?
