Eurovan Pop-Top Rattle??
When traveling on rough roads (paved or otherwise) my '97 Eurovan
Pop-Top makes a lot of noise as if it wasn't locked down. I'm always very careful about how the pop-top fabric is folded and that the pop-top is latched. I think some of the noise may be coming from the bed-board rattling overhead. Has anyone else experienced this and how did you treat it??? My bedboard rattles too. So, I just wedge in some rubber. Low tech,
but it works. kgkirkley@... wrote: Pop-Top makes a lot of noise as if it wasn't locked down. I'm always very careful about how the pop-top fabric is folded and that the pop-top is latched. We've had rattles as well, although they usually don't sound like the

bed board. They subside if we put a couple tight wraps of electrical tape around the posts that lock into the roof latches. This pads the posts to avoid metal-to-metal contact, and will last for a couple months at a time. Our bed board barely moves when the top is down. We always have the mattresses in place, and usually have a blanket or fleece sleeping bag stowed up there as well. We've noticed that the rubber pads on the bottom and sides of the bed board tend to come loose, so we've cemented them back in place with a stronger adhesive. One thing I notice about our pop top on our 95 evc is that it will latch (you
can hear the click) but sometimes it will latch to different degrees. If you stick your finger into the latch you can tell if the latching mechanism has closed completely around the little metal rods. The top will be "latched" but not as fully as it could be and when this is the case ours rattles. I have to latch each side one at a time. I have to hold the roof handle with both hands and sort of jump down with all my body weight on one side (each time waiting for the handle to break and me to crash to the floor). Stonger folks can probably just pull hard and fully latch the latch. Then, when you stick your finger in the latch area again, you can feel that each rod is fully enclosed by the latch mechanism. One thing I have done to minimize the rattling is to get some foam
weather stripping that is about .75" wide and .5 thick. I got a roll of this from the Hardware store, and it is sticky on one side. I put some on the ledges underneath the bed boards on the top bed, and also under the middle part of the lower bed near the back (the part that covers the "tunnel" you see when you open the rear hatch). It made my EVC noticably quieter. Leon Webster '97 EVC |
Kent,
I have the 93 Weekender. About a year ago, the board on which the "upstairs" mattress rests started banging whenever the EV went over a bump. Investigation revealed two plastic cushioning strips had moved out of place. These strips were supposed to be mounted on the side lips of the hole in the EV top (not the pop-top but the metal portion of the EV's body's top) and to be directly under the sides of the bed board. However, the adhesive had allowed them to move out of place such that the bed board was resting directly of the metal of the EV. I repositioned them since the adhesive was fairly soft. It was a very simple job. I am not sure if this is the cause of your noise. I *think* I lowered the roof noise a lot by leaving the cushions *and* a modest-sized down comforter in the upper bunk while the top is down. I wouldn't want to leave too much up there and do damage to the top, but this seemed like a reasonable step. -- Chuck 99 EVC ======== Chuck Bragg, Santa Monica Bay Audubon cgbragg@... fax: 209-671-6396 ======== |

one other tip is that I ensure mine's fully latched by reaching up and

The top should click twice on each side when you pull on the handles.
On my 95 EVC there was an annoying rattle from the top/bed. I removed the metal plate on the forward face of the rear half of the bed. Behind this were loose bolts on either side, this removed one of more serious the rattles. On the 99 this is the plate that has the hinge screwed to it. Steve in Portland |

didn't quite sound like your description. But... After living with my queaks for a few months, I desided to investigate (Sue, my wife, told me to fix it - please). There are only 3 mechanical/structural attachment points for the top, the latch in front and two hinges in the rear. The front latch seemed secure, leaving only the 2 hinges to checkout. I popped the top open, crawled back to the back hinges (the top can hold up a 200lb person). There are 3 threaded bolts on each hinge (total of 6) that hold the top to the hinges. To my surprise, I only found 1 bolt in the passenger side hinge - and it was loose! I couldn't find the others anywhere in the top. My guess was that thay may never have been there because if they fell out, they would still be up there somewhere. I tightened the loose one, then took one out from the driver side and moved it over. I figured 2 and 2 was better than a 3 and 1 arrangement. I have since added the additional missing bolts. Let me know what you find... Our '97 is very quiet with few if any rattles. Did you characters check on
your bedboards to see if there were those rubber dots stuck on the bottom to stop the rattles? Each bedboard had plenty of these even after several fell off and I replaced them. Since we use the upper bed so little and seeing Gerry Edge's approach of just taking everything out of the roof and using the hollow space for storage, I can say that removing the bedboards did not silence the van any at all because we had plenty of those rubber "dots" in the first place. I may return the one mattress to the roof because it keeps clothes pressed nicely for dressy occasions. Gary from Maine |

Can you tell us how? I've looked and found it all to be very tight
quarters, and could not figure out what to turn to tighten. My rattle is mostly on the passenger side hook.
