Eurovan cv joints/axle

Has anyone replaced the CV joints/axles on their Eurovans themselves?? I am getting a loud knocking sound from the driver's side inner CV joint and am wondering the extent of the labor involved.? Parts for my 1995 Eurovan seem readily, available but am wondering if I should tackle this myself or bring to repair shop in West Seattle.? Any suggestions would be welcome.

I have done outer CV joints and full drive axles on my Eurovans.? I woudn't say that they are any harder than on most vehicles but do require some knowhow and muscle.? I did a drivers side on my 2002 full drive axle recently and it took me about 3 hours (having already done one a few years ago).? you need the 12pt. tool (i forget the size, maybe 8mm) and I needed a small pry bar for the transmission side.? It took some wrestling but wasn't overly frustrating.? I would recommend a full axle replacement (I got a quality lobro one for under $400 online) instead of pulling them and rebuilding the CV's.
hope that helps

CV axle on my 1993 driver side was pretty easy.? I think both sides are the same.

My 05 Golf on the other hand had weird angle on passenger side.

Question:? Why do you recommend the full axle?? ? Have you done both?? Or saw some reason the axle should be replaced?? ? ?From watching various videos, it certainly appears that CV joints are quite easy to rebuild (pay attention to the orientation of the cages)? while? replacing that heavy non-wear part (axle) is 4x more expensive.? ?

I have a job pending and plan to rebuild as it will be almost the same labor but parts will drop from $800 to under $200.??

Obviously this is not for people who don't wrench.?

It would depend on what you feel your labor is worth.? For the earlier models, pre 2001, a complete axle is $100 for each side at Europarts-SD.? For the later models that have the AXK engine, they're over $420 each and the sides are different, but Jacques found them for less elsewhere.

I recently did the right side full axle on my 2000 Eurovan myself. ?Much of it was straightforward. ?The most difficult part, where I wished I had a helper, was getting the inner CV lined up and bolted - since the axle grease on that side is exposed, it's hard to get it lined up w/o smearing grease all over, and I'm pretty sure you do not want to get axle grease on the CV joint bolts, since that causes the torque to be off when you tighten.

Sadly, after doing this replacement, the noise I was chasing did not go away. ?So either the noise is coming from one of the left side CV joints, or somewhere else (in the half shaft?)

Picture 1: inner CV joint packed with grease:

Picture 2: inner CV joint flange - lining these up without getting grease in the bolt holes is difficult:

Doing the left side is even more challenging.? There is not a lot of room.? I glue the seal on the joint overnight to help keep it in place during the install.? I wish that these had the metal cover I have seen on some audi CV inner joints.

I agree and understand about wanting the metal cover, but can you say more about "I glue the seal on the joint overnight" ? Not sure I understand this, but it sounds useful...

There is a seal that is sandwiched between the joint and the flange.? It comes with the new axle (usually).? To just stick it on the joint with grease when installing is a crap shoot if it is going to stay in place.? I glue it on the joint with some permatex over night, so it stays when you are installing.

Interesting! ?I'm pretty sure my replacement axle didn't have a seal (nor do I remember seeing a seal on the old axle I removed). ?I wonder if the seal only belongs on certain axle assemblies? ?Perhaps it's manufacturer- or year-dependent? ?Mine is a 2000 Eurovan.

I've been thinking about the issue of the cv joints and the severe knocking noise. Perhaps the issue is a loose or bad transmission mount as the boots are still intact on the axle. Has anyone had this? knocking adjacent to tyranny on driver's side when van is in motion?

Yep.? My 95 EVC has been through a few CV joints over the?years and they can get quite?noisy.? Here's two recordings I did when the passenger side had two good boots but something was obviously wrong.? It just got louder and more consistent?from here:

New half shaft and all was well.??

Thanks for the sound track. Yep, the knocking I hear is very similar to what you've experienced. Thanks for your help.

Ray

This has been quite the trip - in addition to the gasoline fumes issue (detailed in the other thread) and more separated tires (which I will write up) I'm now getting new noises which are likely CV joints.

Being in Bend, OR, I called up German Transaxle - they said they were basically booked solid for the entire year, and also gave some advice - apparently many of the axles on the market these days are poor quality, and can only last a few thousand miles before making new CV joint noises. They recommended if at all possible getting the stock axles refurbished. I had replaced my right-side axle a couple years ago, but fortunately, I kept the old axle so this might be possible.

Does anyone know of a place that will refurbish CV joints/drive axles?

I've used Raxles multiple times for CV joints on our 2003 Passat.? I took a chance on some aftermarket axles one time and they didn't last more than a year before they started wobbling.? Sorry to hear about your troubles!? Tires and CV joint issues related?

It’s been awhile since I ordered (8/2016) but last time I was in need I was able to get these?directly from the dealer.??Please note these P/Ns are for?M/T?axles and joints! The?A/T?L side axle is longer by 10mm iirc and the inner joints are completely different. Please do your homework!

Thanks Justin, I will look into this, though the last time I tired to order a part from VW it was the 2000 Evap canister, which (to this day) is still listed as available:

?and only a few days after ordering did they say "this has been NLA since 2016". ??

I remain hopeful about the axles but will report back either way,
