What came standard with a 2002 MV?

Hello, everyone

I just bought a used Eurovan. In hunting around the web, I came across
this email list and decided to join. Please forgive me for any errors in
asking questions about things everyone already knows, and let me know
(politely) if I am breaking any rules on etiquette.

I assume "EV" is short for EuroVan? I happen to be a big fan of the
other kind of EV (Electric Cars), so it will be a source of confusion
for me!

I bought a 2002 MV with 15k miles on it for (hopefully) the good price
of $22,200 from Burnsville VW in Minnesota. Like too many used cars, the
previous owners had stripped it of everything loose that could be
removed without tools, including the owner's manual. The dealer ordered
one for me, but in the meantime I am having to discover things by trial
and error. That means I don't even know what I may be missing. So my
first question is: Can anyone tell me what items I should have gotten
but didn't?

1. No owner's manual. Even the dealer agreed that this is missing, and

Concur that you should have an owner's manual. It is in separate volumes.
You should be able to look at a new EV and see what to expect.

2. I got 2 keys; one with the remote lock buttons that will start the
car, and one that has only a light in it, and won't start the car
(the valet key, I guess). Should there be two keys?
There should be two keys that lock/unlock the doors plus control the
ignition. You should also get one other key which can be used to lock/unlock
doors manually and start the ignition.

3. The '03s I looked at had rubber pads in the trays between the front
and middle jump seats. Mine has empty plastic trays. Are the pads
missing?
My '01 Weekender does not have rubber pads...a visit to the local hardware
store can be useful if you want such pads.

4. There are no snap-on curtains for the windows, but they were in the
'03s on the lot. The cost to order them is amazing (like $700). Are
they missing?
Yes, you should have a full set.

5. The '03 Eurovans have 15" wheels. This one has 16". Are these a
stock option, or something the previous owner installed?
According to the VW website, the '03s have 16" wheels as did the '02s. No
one should be going back to the 15" wheels used on pre-2001 EVs.

Thanks Jeff, but that's not specific enough. For example:

1. No owner's manual. Even the dealer agreed that this is missing, and
ordered one for me.

car, and one that has only a light in it, and won't start the car

In general, since there were absolutely no changes from 2002 to 2003,
anything that you see in the 2003 should be in your van.

Write up a list, give it to your salesperson and manager of the dealership.
Keep one for your records.

One thing you didn't mention was the roadside service package. You should
get a booklet describing this program (4 years!)

Keep in mind that most VW dealers don't sell many EV's...so they may not be
familiar with them. And sometimes models sitting on the lot are cannibalized
to provide missing stuff for other EV's.

Good luck.

#2. the van came with 2 flip keys that are $100.00 plus programming
each. then there is a tiny black key that is your valet. the key VW gave
you is there $6.00 key to shut the average person up. it's a old vw key
with a light in it to make "most" people happy, the battery can be
changed, but t's still wrong. And yes, all keys should start the van,
and be able to drive away.
#3. the rubber pads should be there. there nice to hold the cup in.(if
they wont give them to you, just "look" at another van and take them.

Aha! Thanks. I test drove the MV with a 'flip' key that had the remote
lock/unlock buttons. When I bought it, they stalled me for an hour while
making a second key. The one they presented was the smaller one with the
light. I tried it on the door, and it worked. But once I got home, I
tried it in the ignition, and it *doesn't* work there. When I called the
dealer, he said "they're all like that."

Now I'm wondering what took them an hour to cut an ordinary key that
doesn't have any of the "smarts" to work in the ignition! We have two
drivers in the family, and will need a second ignition key. I'll have to
go back to the dealer and argue a bit.

No, I wouldn't do that. But knowing they should be there encourages me
to bug the dealer for them, or failing that, order them for a 2003 and
know they'll fit.

also, if the dealer is brain dead about the key, if you give them the
vin #, they can order you a new pre cut key to fit the van. this will be
just the top part, then they have to order the bottom half( the
programable part) then program ALL keys at once to your van.
