MY 93 is DYING here - HELP me please
Team Degenerate Motorsports
My 93 weekender with 88K has been running really great since fixing the
fan fuses but now theres a new scary noise :-( It sounds like it's dyin here. Problem began yesterday after a pretty much normal day of use - A noise has appeared from the engine - squeeky almost abrasive sounding noise that appears to not come from any one spot but rather across the entire motor? Noise is present at idle in or out of drive ( auto) and does not go away when RPM goes up while parked - although it may go away when you actually get driving down the road. Noise is there when van is warmed up and is present now on a cold start after sitting overnite - actually it was *very* apparent and nasty sounding while the motor turned over *before* the van fired up - sounding like Scraping or an abrasive noise then more of a squeek once fired up I have hardly any records on this van - and do not think the timing belt was changed by PO - this was something I was going to do before a big 4th of July trip but am wondering if it is the cause here??? What do you guys/gals think it is? and should I even try and drive by the dealer to have him listen??? TIA, Bill |

Well it was not as cushy as the new 29' RV's we rented for the last 5
years but Memorial day weekend trackside at Lime Rock Park was a blast just the same. The Casa Royal EV tent I picked up this Winter from a listee worked GREAT - I put up a few pics: Bill 93 Weekender |

Portable Evaporative Cooling and Air Conditioning Units ?
Jeffrey L. Krattenmaker
Has anyone had any positive or negative experience with such units as
the Swampy or similar 12v units ?? Summertime is here and we're still looking for ways to keep cool on hot / humid nites and to keep the hound cool for short periods of time while shopping. Jeff 97 EVC Dayton, OH |
Water Tank Antifreeze taste
I emptied the water tank antifreeze this past weekend, I've filled it
four times, run lots through the tap and still there's some taste of the stuff. Any recommendations on how to get that taste out of there? I've read the coke and lemon ideas on this list but I'm wary of any sugar or organics in the system. Marty 92 EVCV Calgary |
Re: Timing Belt Tools etc
Michael G. McCarthy
I don't know the exact drill for this particular engine (don't have the Bentley manual) but the typical procedure for a timing chain is to reference the #1 cylinder at TDC (top dead center) of the compression stroke. ?That places the crank in a known position.
toggle quoted message
Show quoted text
Next step, then, is to reference the camshaft. ?On the old 2.2L watercooled 5 cylinders (in Audi, etc) there was punch mark on the inner edge of the cam gear and the idea was to line up that mark with the top edge of the head (ie, the machined surface where the valve cover seal rested.) In any case, whatever the reference mark, when a piston is at TDC both valves should be closed (both cam lobes should be pointing up like rabbit ears). ?If not, you are at the top of the exhaust stroke, and that's not the reference position. When installing the chain, you can be off a tooth one way or the other and no real harm is done (some tuners sell custom cam sprockets that allow you to adjust cam timing a few degrees at a time to change the torque and power curves), but obviously the goal should be to get the timing right on the exact tooth. You can use the factory marks or you can use your own (get a dap of paint and reference each shaft -- crank and cam -- BEFORE you remove the chain). ?As long as your marks are lined up after you replace the chain you are OK. Remember the crank turns turns TWICE each time the cam turns ONCE, so just dapping some paint on each gear for a reference mark is no guarantee the relationship between the two shafts is preserved if either shaft is spun around. ?So, either use the TDC method or, if you are using the paint method make sure you DON'T move the shafts very far during the repair. If you've done a transmission, you can do this repair. ?Apparently the hardest part is getting the harmonic balancer off. ??From what I've read in this newsgroup, getting that off might be a little more than the shadetree mechanic can accomplish. ?If, though, you can get the balancer off, the chain replacement isn't too bad. Use of this tool requires disassembly of motor mount and then shifting of engine. ?That's the by-the-book way to do the job, but you can twist the tensioned roller's spring arm WITHOUT that tool (a 10" pipewrench w/cheater worked fine for me.) << Another essential tool for removing the front axles (for changing CV boots>> << etc, NOT used for timing belt) is Support frames 3250>> I disagree that this tool is essential (and it sure is expensive). ?You can safely and properly disassembly the front end (for CV, bearing, brake caliper repair, etc) by supporting the control arms with jacks and blocks. ?Tool 3250 is effective in shops where time costs $55/hour and up, the customer is charged the book rate for the repair regardless, each 1/10th of an hour actually consumed over book matters. ?For the weekend mechanic, with all day to replace their CV boots, you don't need this tool. Keith -
Can't say that I can help you out, but I am just getting ready to buy the same awning. I was going to get it directly from Carefree of Colorado, the company that makes it for the WV dealers. How much did you pay, for the awning, and what did it cost for installation? What color does the "Eurovan" brand awning come in? Carefree sells the 8' awning for $259 and the brackets for $50. The model is the LB Sidewinder II and it comes in a variety of colors. Timing Belt Tools Ordering info
The VW tools are ordered directly from Zelenda. Dealers normally don't supply
them. Ask if they have any used available, as they serve as a clearinghouse for the tools when mechanics don't need them. The tools aren't cheap, but all three listed below will cost you less than paying the labor for the timing belt job. Zelenda Phone# 800 221 0126 Counter holder 3248a (secures vibration damper to remove crank bolt) Ribbed belt install tool 3299 (works REALLY well) Another essential tool for removing the front axles (for changing CV boots, etc, NOT used for timing belt) is Support frames 3250 Comments on the job: replace the water pump at the same time. However, in order to replace the pump, you must remove the rear timing belt plate. To get the plate off, you need to remove the cam shaft sprocket. I was unable to get the bolt off this sprocket (even while using the special Snap-on tool made for the purpose), so I ended up bending the plate-didn't go back right and I had to wire the top of it back to prevent rubbing noises. That was the only bad part of the job. I imagine without the other tools parts of the job could be bad-especially getting the bolt off the crank. -gb |

Sidewinder Awning and Tent
I recently purchased a Sidewinder Awning and Tent from my local
Volkswagon Dealership, but the tent came without any instructions. Does anyone know what the spring-loaded tent poles and the two small pieces are for?, Also, after setting up the 2 side flaps and the front flap, I found two additional small flaps, Does anyone know what these are for? The v-belt for an EV with A/C is part number 074-260-849-J (list $54.95). You have to get the timing belt correct to the tooth. ?The computer cannot compensate for the physical relationship between the crank and the cam. Mike ---------- From: "RocknRolz" To: Subject: [ev_update] Timing Belt Date: Sun, May 28, 2000, 4:04 PM I have to bite the bullet soon and replace my timing belt. Since several members of this list experienced noisy belt tensioner pullies, I have been thinking about replacing mine just in case. Does anyone have the VW# for that part. Re: EV 5 cyl oil filters
Some threads back - the Purolator oil filter for the EVC 5-cyl was discussed
The t # listed then was #4136. That number has been changed the new part is #L40316 The filters are over-painted in olive drab and hand stamped ¡°Made in Germany¡¯ The white Purolator box is also hand stamped ¡°Made In Germany" in purple ink. My guess is a Mann or Deutsch filter repackaged. At $5.99 on sale (regularly $6.99) who can complain!!! And best of all it has the BELOVED 27 mm NUT on the bottom. To all those who do their own oil changes, I highly recommend a filter with a nut for ease of doing the NEXT oil change Don¡¯t have a 27 mm nut. A 1 and 1/16 inch socket is identical and works just fine STEVE with 95 EVC |
Re: Window blind repair
to Bob Lang: sorry but we had a roll of cord left over from a repair job.
My wife purchashed a lot of pleated blinds that had been custom purchased, returned to the store and finally donated to a church sale. They were like one dollar each. Only problem is they were too short for out windows (very narrow casements 23 inches wide and 64 long. ) So I went to a blind repair place and purchased a coil of the cording, Cant remember the price but it was under $10 hope this helps.
