Tires AGAIN - need the quick and dirty

Yes, I have searched the archives, but I would really
prefer not to read through all those messages, so
would someone be so kind as to give me the quick and
dirty synopsis on which tires are best for a 1997 EVC.

I would like to hear about both the Continentals and
the Michelins. Also, are any Goodyears good?

Joan,

There are a variety of EVs being discussed in the forum, and I forget which one you have, but in most cases shocks are very easy on an EV. ?No special tools required that any decent mechanic wouldn't already have, no extensive disassembly/reassembly of other components. ?With a lift, air tools and an honest clock, I would think this is a half-hour job for most EVs.

I am wondering how many others keep a record of trips and nights
spent etc., When I passed our Vanagon to my son it had taken us 330k
klm's (205k miles) and provided 584 nights mostly in forests, on beaches
or on mountain tops and each trip was marked on a wall map along with
the dates.
Since Xmas we have spent 42 nights and travelled 11000klms (6800m.)
@ 26.8 m.p.g. (US) in the EVC and have started another wall map !
It is interesting to refer to the wall map to see when and where we
visited and frightening to see how quickly time passes.

The Michelin Agilis 51s have performed very well after 44,000 miles. The
first 96,000 miles were with Goodyear G64s which were OK except they got
noisy after about 40,000 miles, often hydroplaned with no warning in wet
weather and the radial belts separated from the surrounding rubber making the
tire quite squeaky, which was particularly noticeable at slow speeds. YMMV.

I have no experience with Continentals on an EV.

I ordered the bilsteins last week from shox.com for $349, delivered, and
Steve at Bugnutz here in Sarasota is taking care of installing them for me.
Unfortunately, Shox shipped them to my billing address up north instead of
to Bugnutz like requested, so I have to wait another week. (Nokia, on the
other hand, got my tires to him in 4 days.)

I had the shocks installed on my Vanagons at a regular tire place that I
knew did good work. Is shock installation a brain surgery kind of thing?

Someone on list recommended The Wizard in S. Florida
as a mechanic, but he will not put the bilstein shocks
on our EVC unless we purchase them from him. He wants
to charge us $130 per shock! How do you find a
mechanic who will allow you to bring the part?

Check the vacuum valve switches on the brake/clutch pedals. They can
get out of adjustment as the pedal mechanism wears.

Yep, mine seems to act this way sometimes too and the gauges are fine.
Unfortunately, I don't have any light to shed, I'm baffled as well.

i had a similar problem which seemed related to the gauge problem.
when the temp and fuel gauges were cutting out the cruise would too.
possibly the unstable voltage in the instrument cluster affected signal
for the cruise.

Ron-

Yes, I know VW has had a 4Motion version of the EV in Europe for some time,
that is why I do not feel it is too big a stretch for them to export it to
NA. Now that they are bringing a 4Motion Passat, why not a 4Motion EV? Many
of the components are the same and the 4Motion training for the VW
technicians would cross over between the Passat and EV. I think a similar
argument holds for TDI, it's already in NA, why not on EV's. If VW gets
enough letters/inquires to feel there is a market for 4Motion, TDI, etc on
EV's in NA they will export those products to us.

Trip Report from home.

Greetings to All, you, too!

The first experience I'll report is the perception of immense space in the
house. Immense! We didn't bump into each other getting a cup of tea...even
making the bed last Saturday was roomy. Maybe we had been in the Carpet too
long? That was four days ago; by now it's effect is being modified.
The Carpet did pretty good, for a middle-aged machine now. At 49650
miles we still report no difficulties but one....the yellow light stays on
for longer than ever. But, it does go off once in a while to confuse things.
Any other
comments on the yellow light syndrome would make me better able to give a
realistic report to Thompson VW for a check-up by next week. The new
Michelin tires seemed to do great all thru the weather changes (way below
freeze to tropical 80's). Got two new stars on the new windshield but they
are not in the way of driver. Another $500 from Insurance place, I'm afraid.
We have no interior modifications and did not miss them. There are three
bungies between the roof handles to dry towels as we travel; very handy as
we never stay in a place for long when travelling.
Here's some data for all to use:
Tour distance: 7,704 miles
Gasoline (highest $1.66) 397.98 Gals.
Mileage: 19.4 mpg
Nights in van: 39 nights
Cost to "camp" $459 or $11.77 per nite!
Total days of Tour: 72 days
Cost to sleep all of Tour $777. or $10
per nite.

Well, that's enough data for you living room pilots/navigators to figure
how much you need to "tour" in the EVC. We were usually showered every nite
and always secure inside that steel body. Nope, we don't have a phone yet!
I'll do a little more literal thing about the end of the trip later, but
Bill Armstrong was kind enough (if you could tolerate my writing) to forward
to the group some of the adventure. Photo of Belle walking past three
alligators is being developed and I could waste your bandwidth with it
attached if requested. Looking forward to a summer in the Maritimes...

In other words, you can feel the pedal depress, and it will seem like the cruise is functioning, but it quickly becomes apparent that the EV is steadily slowing down. Yet, there are times (maybe 10% of the time) when I'll set the desired speed and it stays right at that speed, over undulating terrain. If anyone could shed some light on this interesting situation, I would be grateful.

I put them on both my "95 and my "99. Same model number. Pretty good guess
that the "97 is ok (as a matter of fact, when I called Bilstein on this they
told me that they were all the same even if they wern't shown in their
catalog).

"S" switch follow up

 

Thanks to all who let me know the function of the "S" switch. My
owners manual addresses the Sport and Economy modes of the
transmission program. It says that the sport mode is invoked by
pressing the accelerator pedal quickly and economy mode by pressing
slowly.

I thought that this switch might have something to do with the
transmission because last week when I washed down the engine
compartment with a garden hose my transmission acted up the next time
I drove. It shifted erratically (sp?)and even shifted into 1st gear
at 40 mph! I thought I'd discovered why the original owner sold me
this great van for only $3600. But it turned out to be water in the
connector on top of the transmission. When I was driving it and it
was
acting up I switched the "S" switch and the transmission shifted
gears. So I conected it's function with the transmission but just
could connect the "S" with Sports mode. Thanks!
