Re: What came standard with a 2002 MV?
wolfcreekadman <[email protected]>
In general, since there were absolutely no changes from 2002 to 2003,
anything that you see in the 2003 should be in your van. Write up a list, give it to your salesperson and manager of the dealership. Keep one for your records. One thing you didn't mention was the roadside service package. You should get a booklet describing this program (4 years!) Keep in mind that most VW dealers don't sell many EV's...so they may not be familiar with them. And sometimes models sitting on the lot are cannibalized to provide missing stuff for other EV's. Good luck. Nick Ahlfs |

At this point I think you need a really good coolant system flush, an oil change and flush, and a transmission system flush. With all of the proper fluids in their proper places people can start to do some analysis of what is going on. With coolant in the oil you have the symptoms of a blown head gasket in the engine. In those situations or suspected situations I would recommend an oil sample to be taken and sent for analysis. Your situation sounds so strange I don't really know what you would analyze, except that as soon as possilbe I would be trying to get the wrong fluids totally out and the right ones in, and I don't mean next week, or next month. Need RF headlight and turn signal
Thomas Isom <[email protected]>
I am looking for a right front headlight and turn signal for my '93
EV. I lost the right front turn signal on the freeway on Saturday night. The reason it fell out (second one that's fallen off in a couple of months) is that the retaining clip on the headlight mounting frame thingy is broken off so the turn signal is not held in. Plus, the right front headlight has a corroded reflector due to not being water tight. I also need the holder for the turn signal bulb because the plastic broke where the retaining flanges are. The flanges broke off and got lost with the turn signal. (I drove back and forth on a stretch of the freeway at midnight in a wind storm looking for the turn signal, but it was gone.) I am considering converting to European H4 headlights, but the simplest and cheapest option is to get another US-spec right headlight. I could go with either the amber reflective US-spec turn signals or some clear Euro-style ones (I bought those too, but lost the right-side one). The clear Euro-style ones look good and I like the little turn signal bulge, but the reflector kind are the proper equipment for the U.S. and might possibly add some very slight margin of safety (?). European automotive lighting is very good, but I do think the U.S.-required side reflectors and side marker lights are better/safer. (OTOH, the big white billboard-side of my EV isn't exactly likely to escape notice even in poor visibility conditions.) Anyone have a right headlight complete with plastic mounting frame? Any turn signals? Thanks. |

Tranny oil/engine oil/ leaking into coolant
marymau1 <[email protected]>
3 weeks ago the coolant light was on. It was discovered to have
transmission oil in the coolant container. They replaced the transmission cooler, completed transmission service and flushed coolant, and replaced coolant resivior. Friday, the same light came on, they just called me and told me it is now "engine" oil in the coolant. This sounds strange to me. Is it possible they repaired the wrong thing 3 weeks ago? The first time the coolant stuff was much thicker, and more orangy, than this time. They are now trying to diagnose the exact problem, and will call me later today. If anyone can think of some questions for me to ask, I certainly would appreciate it. TIA Mary |

with the van on the ground. In order to reach the slave cylinder, I had to get underneath. Thankfully, my 2 sons are home for the holidays and were able to push the van up onto the ramps. Also, thankfully, I have a sloping driveway. I still have the problem of the cracked mounting plate for the master clutch cylinder which I believe to be a "recall" design fault. However, I haven't convinced the dealer of that "yet". Anyone else have master clutch cylinder problems due to a cracked mounting plate? It seems the sewfine web site doesn"t cover Z-beds and the rear cushion did they do yours? Early westies like Pokey have very squared off rear benches as opposed to later models that are more moulded. Also, it is somewhat of a rarity, but another vanagon seat they don't have is the two person passenger bench that gives you three across seating in front. This was present in panel vans and some singlecabs, plus a few others I'm sure. I have been meaning to measure mine and send it to you but I haven't yet. Thanks, Chris ---- Original message ----

Thanks Mike.
That's what I hoped. As I prefer back roads when touring, varying my speed happens without effort, and the desired intent of a family touring vacation would be to take it easy--I just didn't want to have to keep it to a snail's pace! Whichever side of the pond I do this trip, if I do it this way, I'll factor in a dealer visit at approximately 1000kms to change the oil. RWC --- In ev_update@..., "Michael G. The 02 manual lists 5w30 as an alternate to the 5w40 synthetic.Walmart carries Shell Rotella 5-40 synthetic. It's in the blue bottle and sells for just under $13 for a gallon. Lots of tdi owners are using it. And they are changing it at 10k mile intervals. The white bottles are regular dino oil. |
Rear Heater Not Working ('99 EV GLS)
Brad Schwartz
Hi,
I seems that the rear heater in our '99 GLS is not blowing. I looked inside the vent to see if there were any blockages and there weren't. Looked underneath the van and the heater is getting hot... Just not blowing. Are there fuses associated with this that can be checked? Anyone with a Bentley book care to look this up for me please... If it isn't a fuse... Is it the whole blower unit? Anything else to troubleshoot or check? Anyone know how much a new rear heater is? Can the old one be rebuilt or repaired? Thank you, Brad -- Brad A. Schwartz ----> baschwar@... ----> |

Front Seat Measurements
Larry Chase
Volks,
Based on inputs from Tom Forhan, It appears there are three front seat versions on the 83-91 Vans: VW P/N's 251 881 375 ... Stock 251 881 375A for the swiveling seat 255 881 375A for GL models. GLS vs. MV legroom
Todd Kenyon
Az wrote:
"Ok, I'm having a hard time understanding this. How the heck can it (GLS) have "significantly more legroom" (than the MV) when it's the same vehicle with the same seats?" Well, it seemed to me that either the front seats are mounted farther back or the adjustment track is longer on the GLS. Since I didn't have the two vehicles sitting next to each other, it may be that I just got that impression due to the more limited MV recline (don't think so), or more likely due to the rearward travel of the front seats being limited by the middle seats in the MV. Whatever the cause, I know that in the MV front passenger seat I could barely get my knees off the dashboard, and in the driver seat (I sit relatively close for my size) I barely felt like I had enough room with the seat all the way back. In the GLS I could almost straighten my legs in both seats. Now maybe this is also the case if you remove the middle seats from the MV, but that would negate the whole reason for getting an EV in the first place. Todd Kenyon |

I too am & have been wrestling with the decison to try to keep the
93 going vs buying new while we still can.....Obviously, it's a decision that we can all only make for ourselves. As pieces seem to be falling off my car at an ever accelerating rate, my car is making the decision for me ;-( We're discussing tying the new EV purchase into a vacation and buying it there and driving it home (if we do our usual "visit the family" trip out west) or driving around Europe and shipping it home (esp attractive if we get some of the Europe only stuff). Given the modern engines & oils, how important is the 1,000km breakin period? There are some who say the period is a holdover from the old days, and some who even say driving hard when new is a better way to break in an engine, (though these seem to be mostly motorcycle folk (Az?)). Two local dealers say it doesn't matter at all, but they also are trying to sell (slightly) used cars they bought to ferry their kids cross country to college. Any opinions? RWC |
