Subject: [ev_update] RIP 93 GL

Well, dear friends, I'm afraid my trusty 93 GL has been unexpectedly
retired.? I was struck by an inattentive driver last week, and the
damage has resulted in a "total loss" declaration.? No injuries to my 11
year old or me, but the van's a goner.? We were struck in the left front
by another car that failed to see me in the right lane.? We ended up in
a ditch of muddy, stinking water with a bad list to starboard.?
Significant body damage and untold mechanical damage.? Broken tie rod
for sure, possible front end drive damage, too.

One one hand, I was hoping for a possible repair since the van's been
paid off for a few years now.? On the other hand, it would never run the
same.? I'm sick about having to replace a fully functional lien free
vehicle and incur those dastardly monthly payments.? Ugh.

I'm waiting on the opening low ball from the adjuster, and the degrading
process of settling up.? It's almost as frustrating as buying a new
car.? The only good thing I've been able to determine is that I don't
have to worry about leaking fuel lines, a clunky transmission, ordering
new Bilstein's, and a cranky starter anymore.

I'm now searching for a replacement.? I would really like to stay with
an EV, since I've grown very attached to my old van.? After 157,000
miles, I feel like I know them pretty well.? This list and the Maller
predecessor have been invaluable for long term ownership and
maintenance.? My bride is quietly pushing for a Honda Odyssey.? We're
not considering any other vehicles at this point.? I can tell you that
both vans are hard to find.? The Honda's are in high demand and short
supply even though production is increasing.? The new EV's are hard to
find simply because most VW dealers don't want to carry them.? Of the
five VW dealers in Dallas/Ft. Worth, only two will order them.? If
anyone knows of a dealer with some inventory, I'd appreciate a
heads-up.? Delivery between dealers is an easy task.

I've been driving Granny's new Olds Delta.? It's a nice ride, but not a
van.? Go without your van for a few days and you'll really appreciate
the versatility of the EV.? We had soccer tournaments the past two
weekends and missed the ability to haul cargo, kids, coolers and two
friendly large dogs.

The carcass is silently sitting at a body shop in Greenville, Texas,
awaiting disposition.? I have no intention of releasing it until I've
settled.? If I know where it ends up, I'll let the list know.? There are
several servicable parts that could be scavenged.? The motor was working
fine with lots of life remaining.

If any of you are aware of a dealer with some inventory or a low mileage
used 99, please email me at 'drj9009@...'.?? Thanks a bunch.

Wow...maybe inflation is really upon us? Many of the '97 readers got theirs
for $300 or 350. Sure is a nice seat but we've used it three times in three
years. Wow...

Re: Snow Tire -Reply

Gary Clendening

Dave,

Drove Flying Carpet for two winters in Maine in described snow, slush, ice.
Worked fine as long as one remembers the thing weighs three tons....very
critical to recall as you try to stop suddenly. The Goodyears seemed
acceptable to me for 40,072 miles in all conditions. After hearing of the
poor wear that others report for the Goodyears, I can only tell of normal
tire maintenance jobs I did...but, I don't ever drive at 80 mph and prefer
travelling below 55 so I can see something as I tour. Of course I'm retired
and have a choice; we even travel on two lane roads instead of those other
fast lane expressways. That may be the difference in tire mileage.

One tire was defective and wore badly...square? The other four were fine
and I have one left for a spare with my new Agilli's from Mich. Looking
forward to a long respite from difficulty but the Goodyears seemed okay.
We're still running the original shocks, too. Again, these seem to be
effective for our demands.

You won't be able to access the fridge with the center seat in place.
However, we find that disconnecting the center seat and rolling it out
of the way is a very quick and easy procedure. If you need the fridge,
use it -- the seat shouldn't be that big a problem.

I purchased my 99EVC in June with an agreement from the dealership
that they would sell me a center bench as soon as they could get one in
offer in writing ). Well after many calls to the dealership and plenty of
broken promises I finally got the call that my seat had arrived. The
salesman couldn't tell me how much it would cost and as I live 50 miles from
the dealership I wanted this information before I made the 100 mile round
trip. I was transferred to the parts manager who claimed that the dealer
cost for the center seat was $848.00. Of course I threw a fit since the
price that I was quoted at the time of the sale was $500.00. Does anyone
have any information on what this seat actually cost? I was finally able to
convince this dealership to sell me the seat for the $500.00 that they
originally claimed I would have to pay. I plan to pick it up tomorrow. The
dealership is close to an amusement park that has a Halloween special so I
think I will camp there for one night to take my son to the park. Any
advise on using the camper with the center seat installed? Should I fire up
the refrigerator or will I not be able to access it?

Getting to the fridge with the seat in is a pain but possible. You will
have to unlock lock from the bolts and slide it back. It will go far enough
back that the fridge door will clear.

Re: Light bulbs for switches?

Chris Noeske

The light bulb wires are tack welded(not soldered) to copper traces, which
are embedded in a plastic that has a low melting point. Mine quit working
because the leads broke at the tack weld. If you try to solder them on to
the circuit the switch plastic melts long before the solder does. If however
the light bulb is burned out you might be able to cut the leads at the base
of the old bulb and solder it to the leads of the new light bulb.

I've just started looking into this myself. The switches have 12 volt
"grain of wheat" bulbs ( a bulb with two wire leads) soldered onto
miniature circuit boards. I plan on desoldering them and resoldering in
new ones from radio shack. I'll post when I see how this works.

Re: Spotted a 92 EVC

Gene Stampfer

FYI

Just happened to be driving by a VW dealer in London, Ontario.
I was surprised to see an EVC on the lot that looked really spotless.
I asked the dealer to let me have a look at it.
This unit looks like it just rolled out of a showroom. It was spotless,
not a mark or scratch anywhere.
The person who owned this unit (and probably his wife) must have spent all
his/their time giving it lots of TLC.
Even the ash tray and cup holders were lined with rubber pads to prevent
scratches.
It is a white 92 Westy, automatic, a/c, central door locks, equpped with a
side awning and rear bike rack.
It has 115,000 km./ 71,500 miles and the asking price is CA $ 23,900 /
approx. $15,000 US
If anyone is interested, I can get more details.

of overdrive, sounds like its slipping. Has anyone else had this
problem?, someone told me it was normal. The trans was just rebuilt
about 20,000Kms ago.

I've got the Agilis on my '93 EV GL and they look really good after 10,000
miles. However, I'm pretty sure there is no 40,000 mile guarantee on these
tires. If you find evidence to the contrary, please let me know. The NTB
manager was adamant that these are "truck" tires and therefore have no
mileage guarantee. In fact, I could find no treadwear rating on the
sidewall.

Friends, what in the world could cause me to have such lousy mileage on the
tires of my 1997 EVC?

My van now has 41,000 miles, and I have gotten only 14,000 miles out of
each
set of tires. The first set were the Goodyear Cargo tires, followed by two
sets of Vredestein. I am near the end of that third set right now.

I keep the inflation at 45-50 lbs. I drive sanely around town, though the
overwhelming percentage of miles I put on my van is on the highway. My
tires
wear evenly, and there is no pulling on the steering wheel: no sign of an
alignment problem, in other words.

My next tires will be the Agilis, where I can get that 40,000 mile
guarantee.

EV WK 5 Passenger + mega gear?

Donald Newman

Hello from a '99 Weekender,

I'm wondering if anyone with this vehicle has yet mounted additional
seat back supports on or behind 'C' pillar , pinning seat in forward
(bed) position resulting in a five passenger vehicle with huge capacity
for 'toys' in in the rear.

It seems like a nice idea for even greater versatility.

$139 doesn't sound that bad and it's an amount I would gladly pay to avoid
all that would be needed in replacing them on a Saturday afternoon. Also,
when you look at your comprehensive deductible if you did have a fire I would
again gladly pay the $139 (this is the insurance geek coming out in me).

Bill Segesser

hi volks,
had the 95 in last week for oil change and deciphering all the weird
electronics behavior (false overheating, dash lights/no lights, funky
digital clock, etc.) & decided to have fuel lines and clamps replaced by
an independent repair shop.

They detected no leaks, but replaced all. I paid $139, which is a bit
expensive (see note below), but cheap compared to the alternative of not
fixing it & my lack of comfort in doing fuel line work myself. Maybe I
can argue with VW to cover this in the event of a recall. ha!

Well, on to the dash "board": ours needs replacing or repair. As our
mechanic says, VW is "quite proud" of this board and wants $390 for it.
Does anyone know if this is available from on-line or other sources
commonly frequented here? If so, I'd be grateful if you let me know.

Also, I intend to keep my old board, and will probably have one of the
electronic techs I work with repair it (if possible).
always handy to have a spare...

I took delivery of my new EVC in June ( giving up my trusty 84 Westy in the
process ). That's when the trouble began. First there was the noises
mostly due to something loose inside the sliding door ), then I discovered
that my Winnie suffered from the dreaded Refrigerator not working on propane
( shorted igniter ) and intermittent furnace syndrome ( my son and I woke up
freezing, the furnace blowing cold air ). Meanwhile I waited for my
optional center seat that was supposed to take two weeks to be delivered.
The dealer fixed the noisy door and the foldout table that had fallen apart
and the shorted igniter. After much back and forth debate I was finally
able to get the dealer to replace the thermostat hoping that would solve my
heater problems, but still no seat. I was told a seat came in but was sold
accidentally. Last month I got a call that my center seat was in but that
the upholstery did not match ( yea like I want that ). Finally yesterday I
picked up my center seat but it doesn't fit tightly on one side. Last night
the furnace worked but the fan ran continuously the entire night. HELP. I
need advise. I live in Delaware but purchased the vehicle in Pennsylvania.
Has anyone had any luck using an exorcist? Faith healer? Lawyer?
Mercenary? Being patient seems to be a bad strategy.
Oh yea. My bus list to port.

Todd,

I paid $450 or so, the gas tank is removed which is a cumbersome procedure
(some of the front suspension needs to come out...)

You really should fix/get the line fixed; I saw Ric Golen's van when I
dropped mine off. I suspect that Ric is VERY fast with a fire extinguisher,
and that had he (Ric) been a milli-second slower the van would have been a
total loss....

VW said nothing about not driving the van when I called. If the problem
(i.e. smell or fuel leaking) comes back again, I'll get it fixed for
sure.
Anyone had this fixed at the dealership and know how much it costs?

That kind of wear indicates an alignment problem. Have you had a 4
