I recently had similiar power loss problems.? My '93 Eurovan would loose power and not rev past 3000 rpm.? I thought immediately that it was an oxygen sensor problem.? Unpluging the oxygen sensor seemed to help, but only for a few minutes of driving.? I limped it over to my friends garage and he hooked it up to the OBD computer and it came up with a bad OXS and bad coolant temp sensor.? The OXS had been replaced on the van previously and the code might not of been reset so on Friday I took the cheap route and replaced the $11 coolant sensor.? This morning (Monday) I was back at the dealer buying the $170 OXS .? It didn't seem to fix the problem either.
?
It ends up the cat is toast.? It has a shattered core.? I cut the exhaust and undid one pipe connection and dumped it out this morning.? After putting everything back together, it runs great.? The exhaust rattle I thought I had is gone too.? Turns out it was the cat pieces rattling around.
?
Has anyone on the list priced Catalytic Converters lately?

It's certainly true that a fouled and/or poorly connecte OXS sensor will cause a variety of problems. ??I disconnected and re-connected mine once and immediately could not smoothly rev the engine (it stumbled badly under load in the vicinity of 3000 rpm). ?The problem DID go away with the OXS sensor disconnected, so that's an easy and quick test.

said he had to see it happen . I gave it to them for a week and still no help
as i drove it away from the shop it happened again ,I was so disgusted I
started looking myself even tho it may have voided the warranty.I think the
problem left after i replaced the o2 sensor.I learned to turn the switch off

Re: 93 EVC - Pros & Cons?

Michael G. McCarthy

Sorry, I sent the other email before it was finished. The '93 is the only
widely availalble EV, although there are quite a few other permutations
(other years, engines, campers, Winnebago conversions, etc), most of those
were not here in the US. Basically, there was the '93, the '99, and now the
2000.

I would NOT rely on Ralph Nader for auto advice. Here's the very first
thing he lists for the EV at the site you mentioned:

Engine/Driveablity: Drifts/pulls ?92 G/GTI/J, ?92-93 Ct/F, ?92-94 Co, ?93 E,

The '93 Eurovan drifts/pulls?, and this is an Engine/Driveability problem?
This is an ALIGNMENT problem, and all cars need alignment/re-alignment with
regularity. That seems like a useless list. A '92 GTI has the problem, but
the "93 doesn't?, or the '91?

You could easily pick through the Nader's list and take it apart piece by
piece. For a REAL list of real problems, I'd scroll through this eGroup or
get a back issue of EV Update (email to gregoryw@...). The true
list of problems is not much different than any other vehicle, and generally
better than most. (Ford is reporting in the last few days that they are
having problems with there 3.8L V-6 from the mid 90's....... all those
Windstars with engine problems. Now THAT's a real problem, not
"drifts/pulls".)

We have come across one for sale. It has 50,000 miles on it and

How much should we be willing to pay?

Your problem may be as simple as changing the catalic converter. So you are
cruising down, with 70, then a broken piece clogs the exhaust in you
muffler, and then when you turn your engine off everything returns to
normal. Is that it?
I had something like that before. The catalic converter sometimes breaks in
little pieces, and clogs the muffler. One way to know that your exhaust is
clogged is that your RPM drops down much slower than it did before from
5-6000 to 1000
