There are some people who have installed a bypass device on the rear heater
hoses of the 93 EV to solve a problem of a leaking rear heater core. All the
hoses are accessible below the vehicle. I would crawl under and trace the
hoses to ensure they are intact. If you do find a bypass, you will then have
to ensure that the heater core is without leaks. If you can't get the rear
heater system working quickly, I would not be too concerned. The front
heater provides ample heat and can be directed aft if necessary.

I was going to mention this, but you beat me to it. Oh well. I'll
point out that my checklist is mostly procedural, that is, things
to DO, not so much things to PACK.

As far as things to bring, I find it easiest just to store almost
everything (kitchen stuff, bed sheets, pillows, flashlights with
batteries, candle lanterns, lighters, first aid kit, etc.) in the
van permanently, so it's always ready to go. My camp kitchen is
mostly small lightweight stuff designed for backpacking or car
camping. Before a trip, all I need to pack is clothes and food,
plus an optional guitar, telescope, camera, etc.

If you borrow kitchen gear piecemeal from your home kitchen, you'll
want to make a packing list and revise it after every trip until
you get it right.

An authorized California dealer just quoted me an MSRP of $37,727 on a
new EVC with companion seat and CD player. Is this real? He was willing
to take $400 off, which makes it nearly $41,000 with tax and license.

Maybe there's some "planned obsolesence" I should be aware of?

The last video I got from VW was the one promoting the 93 EV. Now I have a 93
EV.

Regarding the 2000 EV movie: I also received VW's offer and returned my
postcard to order a copy. Let's see if I can resist the sales pitch for the
2000. Since I have 137,000 miles on my 93, I suspect I am destined to fail.

This was a pretty classy thing for a reporter to do. It makes me wonder if
his radio broadcast is on the internet for those who would like to listen it,
as well as what their website is.

You can change the resistor by taking out the dash and simply replacing it.
Europarts carries them. But to lubricator the fan you will have to take it
out using the previously posted procedure. If you go to that much trouble,
you might as well replace it because sooner or later, the fan is going to
blow the resistor and start squealing again.

As noted in my last post, I am finding gremlins in my MV. I am without a
Bentley for now and would appreciate it if someone could scan any pages
pretaining to the cruise control system, and forward them to me attached to
an email? My symptoms are this; The cruise control worked on our drive
across the country but now it won't respond at all. Is there a relay
somewhere that I can replace or fuse to check?

I got a good deal on my new MV but it seems it is not without it's little
non-functioning items. The rear heater under the passenger side jump seat
is blowing out cold air only. I have the dials on the dash set correctly,
to no avail. My Bentley manual is on back order from the bus depot so I
don't really know where to go from here. On my Vanagon the rear heater has
a valve that you close in the summer to bypass the heat and blow only cold.
Is there something like that on the MV that I am just missing? Please help
we are heading out on a week trip to SOCal. on fri.

I got the same invite to get the movie. Liked the fold out brochure. Nice
to see some advertising dollars going towards rhe EuroVan. I sent in my
card and eagerly await the movie!

The German VW site has a picture of one driving up a
mound of snow. Except for the fact that it is driving
on the snow, it looks like any other EV.

I can't help you with an exact url, someone on this
site posted the site directions to the photo a few
months back.

I have been monitoring the German counterpart to our list, the T-4 Forum.
Recently there was a discussion on fog lights. It was the consensus that the
original are very expensive. In Germany the dealers say that one has to change
the bumper and install one that has some sort of support for the lights. I am not
sure how true that is. The price they quoted was DM1800 for fog light
installation, which is about $900. I opted for a cheap set of fog lights,
drilled 2 holes on the bumper where the original fog lights would be, and
installed the lights. I also got the original switch last time I was in Germany.
I wired them as day-time-running-lighs. Fog lights, however, do not light up the
road much. They give you a wider field of vision, but almost directly in front of
the vehicle. I leave them on at night but they don't make much of a difference.
The German T-4 group has also been discussing 100W bulbs, since even German
owners are not happy with the light output of the EV (even though euro-headlights
are much better in my opinion). Several members of the group use these stronger
bulbs with no problems thus far. One member has been using them for 2 years and
he claims that the reflectors have not been damaged by the excessive heat. He
even claims that neither the German police nor the German TV (inspection
station) has noticed the upgrade. J.C. Whitney sells a number of different
(illegal) bulbs. Another way to go would be to upgrade to Euro-specs headlights
available at Europarts for $150 each.

i know the a2 jettas have the same problem with the headlights . the vw
expert who sold it to me told me to run a bead of silicone around the sel
where the glass from the headlight meets the metal reflective backing . i am
not sure if this works because i switched from the 2 rectangle lights to the
double round H-4's and have had no problems since.

Somewhere I have the part numbers and pricing for the factory fog lights.
I'll look around at home tonight. The pricing wasn't that bad, but still
somewhere around $300.

You don't need a new bumper, but you need to cut holes in the one you have.
This isn't a big issue if you have the black bumpers, but the painted bumpers
can be easily chipped around the cut opening.

There are also fog light kits available from Hella, but not here in the US.
I've been trying to import these for the past few months and hope to have
some good news soon.

I just purchased the Optima Marine Deep-Start battery (Model D900M) for my
'93 EV MV WK. There have been complaints that it's hard to find a good
deep-start battery that will fit into the space under the driver's seat. I
chose the Optima because it is the right type of battery for the application
and because it is completely sealed, it can be mounted in virtually any
position.

To fit under the seat, I had to mount it on it's side with the terminals
facing forward (allowing front access from the snap-off panel). To my
surprise, this fit precisely into the metal base plate that supported the
original battery. The small metal clip that bolted down to hold the old
battery simply turns sideways to fit the exact dimensions of the Optima.
(There is a God!)

Turned sideways, this clip no longer secures the battery to the base plate
eliminating movement, but it does secure the battery from sliding foreward
and backward. Enough pressure will allow you to slide the battery from left
to right, so I used two styrofoam blocks to take up the space on either side
of the battery.

I am very pleased with the battery - it is also designed to be charged via
solar panels and a voltage regulator. I highly recommend this solution as it
requires no customization (aside from turning the clip around) and makes the
limited space a non-issue.

If you would like to see how I did it, i have some photos showing the
orientation of the battery and the rotated clip and styrofoam blocks. Let
me know if you want the specifics. The battery is more expensive than
regular starting batteries, but it'd a totally different kind of battery.
Check out their website to read up
on what makes it so different.
