Re: Heater fan resistors

Scott Douglas

It is easy to do. First you buy two new resistors, then you remove the front
grill and then you will see them under the left hand head light. Just
remove the two screws holding the resistors heat sink and undo the two plugs
and then replace the resistors and then hook them back up and screw the
complete assy back in to place. It is a 15 minute job and very easy to do.
Do not pay a dealer to do this for you!!

If any body has a EVC older than a couple of years they should check their
heater fan resistors. I have a 95 with 80,000 Km on it and my resistors
were
fried. You can check them with a meter to find out for sure if they are
shot. You might notice that your fan only runs on high. I noticed that the
fan was running on high when I was in city driving or just shut the van
off.
I know that there has been a lot of talk about these resistors but
everybody
should check theirs, just to make sure. They are fairly cheap and easy to
replace by yourself.

Re: CD Changer/Rear speakers

Terry Grogan

Excuse me for not being totally up on this thread, but I recently
replaced my stock tape/radio with an Alpine unit, and therefore
had to replace the speakers with a higher wattage handling
ability. I bought Polk ~4.5" speakers for front and rear. The
fronts came with tweeters for the top of the dash, but the rears
were full range with a built-in tweeter. After the $ warnings
from Circuit City about installing speakers in a van they'd never
seen or worked on I installed them myself with only the normal
'custom' modification problems. I took one door panel off, but
discovered that they could be pushed through from the outside on
the other door. The original tweeters were removed with a hole
saw and the new ones dropped in and taped a little. The really
good news was installing the cross-overs since the hints were that
wiring would have to be done between the door and the dash, etc.
The existing wire was used and the cross-over was just set into
the rather large tweeter cavity and taped a little to prevent
rattling. I was told by a couple of people, and now I believe it,
that I must use the top tweeter and not get only a new combined
speaker for the front doors. For a while during the installation
I was just using the door speaker on one side and the sound
quality was almost non-existent.

So the reason I put in my $0.02s was that the front and rear
speakers are not identical. I don't remember the exact price of
all of the speakers ( stupid combined sale price with the CD and
bad speakers, upgrades, no installation, and the rest of the date
sensitive sales non-sense ) since I had to do it, so I would guess
that they were about $175 total real money.

Free legal advice: distributing 10 to 100 copies of a 100 page excerpt
is probably not within the scope of the fair use doctrine. I'd be
surprised if the manual is not copyrighted, and the fact that only part
of it is being copied is not a sufficient defense. Proceed at your own
risk -- distributor and recipients.

Edward Bevan

Dear Eurofriends:

I'm new to the whole eurovan camper thing. I got interested after
seeing one on the road while I was vacationing with my family. A few
months later I decided
to start some research on it and wound up getting really sold on the
EVC. Although I'll admit honestly that some postings on lists like this
nearly scared me off.
Anyway, after about a month of trying to locate a new one at a
discounted price or find a reasonably priced used one, I gave the
project up. I didn't think I'd
ever get a new one. I told myself that I'd start looking again in the
spring and maybe even go to Canada to get one ( a considerable drive
for me, from NE
Pa.) Then one day very late in Jan 99 I decided to give it a shot and
luckily found a dealer who had gotten stuck with one coming in right
at the year end. A
99EVC. VW discounted the van because they wanted it off the lot and I
got it at dealer cost. as I was driving off the lot I couldn't believe
how cool this thing
was and that I had really gotten it.

Anyway now that you're all bored to death. The content. I've learned
much from postings on this list but after one month of driving, about a
thousand mile is all
( It's a third vehicle in a two driver home ) and only one camping trip
I have a few questions.

1) My CD player ( in dash Panasonic DP22 ) sounds good, but when I take
out the CD, I notice that it's extremely hot. Almost too hot to hold in
my hand.
Anybody have this problem?. I suppose that as long as the CD itself
doesn't melt and nothing else fails, this is OK but it seems like a
poor design. To have that
much heat around the electronics in the dash can't be a good thing and
this is all in the dead of winter.

2) My propane tank doesn't seem to take a full charge, I've had it
filled twice now and it only takes about 2 1/2 gallons ( I'm told a
22lb tank should take
almost 5 gallons ). When I check the tank level it doesn't read full,
the full light flickers but doesn't stay on solid green. Anybody?

3) I'm thinking about getting the awning plus the screen house " add a
room " installed, any thoughts on this, is it worth the hefty price tag?

4) After taking a trip to lake Placid NY I found that the EVC is pretty
good in snow. The Agilis tires are a super all season tire know doubt,
but does anyone
know of a good snow tire for EVC?

5) Any one know of a way to carry a canoe with a EVC. How about just
putting it on the roof with foam blocks protecting the pop-up and rope
holding it
down? Any one carry a canoe this way?

Additional notes:
My big lower cabinet door screws pulled out under very moderate
pressure, the door seemed to be filled with dried up old paper.
My oxygen sensor went bad at 200 miles, of course my check engine light
has been on ever since. It made me feel like a real hard-core EVC owner.
One of my seat belts is defective, a two point on the center seat.
After 3 nights of 10 to 15 below zero weather in Lake Placid, I can
honestly say that my furnace works, It was very comfortable
Yes my van leans to the drivers side too, it's heavier on that side (
isn't this obvious? ) and I can feel it in the handling.

All things considered I do love my EVC, but then again, we haven't know
each other for very long.

Your sincere response is greatly anticipated, E.A.B
.

Re: Eurovan safety

1McCulloch

I paid only 1k more for a new one with 200 miles. If you find one in the
Cleveland, OH area - They'll almost pay you to take it off their lot! Once
the dealer knocked 7k off of the two he had, he sold one to me and then the
other 5 minutes later to another man (really, I watched him buy it!). They
claimed the day was an EV sales record for the state of Ohio. :) I'm just
happy to get the deal.

The cooling fan resistors are behind the headlight. They control the fan in the
engine compartment. It comes on when the engine runs too hot or when the AC is
on.
The interior fan for the heater, cold air, or AC inside the vehicle
(ventilation) is behind the glove box.
I hope that clears up any confusions.

Steve,
First you have to remove the rear seat. Then you take the molded cover off
that covers the hole area of the furnace. There is about 13 screws and then
you will see the furnace. It looks like a big metal box and there is two
screws on the front of it where the big label is, remove those two screws
and remove the furnace face plate. Now you can run the furnace with the face
plate off and see how much heat the thing is capable of putting out. You
will notice that there is another hole for ducting but it is plugged and you
can not access that one because of the fuse box is in the way. If you have
any more questions let me know.

Subject: [ev_update] Re: evc ATF job time

Folks, I have an 80-page "training" manual on the EV, by VW, that's a
self-paced course for the technician. It's written in plain language (eg,
"Want to replace the thing-a-ma-job? Here's what you do: ...... ), it has
GREAT drawings, and it has pertinent parts of the wiring diagram when
necessary. It doesn't cover everything, but it covers a lot. I'd be
willing to make copies for people, and cover my costs. Email me if
interested.

Once again, appreciate any comments on this.
BTW, is there a more descriptive manual than the Bentley?
