I've been following the Sprinter yahoo group
()
and found out that Leisurevans of Canada has buit a camper on
a 158 Sprinter. The price is $75,000, I don't know if that is list,
or
selling price.

Also, Sportsmobile of Austin, TX is in the process of converting a
140 Sprinter to a camper ( on spec)(A lot like an EVC I think)
They told me that if someone orders one, they will build on a
158 wheelbase. I'm thinking about it., because it would be nice
to have more space, and things like generator, AC, etc. - Mary

I was wondering if you could lay down the rear bench seat into the
bed configuration and have the double bench seat in place with
passengers seatbelted?

92-93 window swap

nmykytyn1

Hi from Up here in the Hudson Valley Region of NY.

Just purchased a 93 Eurovan GL, and I to saw the Ebay 92 Euro parts
car I've got a hold on the sliding windows. Just wanted to check to
see
if they will fit without too much difficulty. I've checked with
Triumph
Auto Glass they said they can do it if the body style/window opening
is the same. for $75 each side. Anyone out there know if its possible?

Thanks

Re: Michelin Agilis 51 Tires

I've been shopping for tires too. I checked out the Agilis tire at
the local Costco tire shop. They can get them (2-3 days max) and
quoted me $116.00 each including mounting and balancing.

We recently put a set of Michelin Agilis 51 tires on our '97EVC.
The local
Michelin dealer we went to simply called the warehouse in SC and
ordered
them. It only took 3 working days for them to arrive here in
Asheville, NC.
I think its all a matter of whether or not the dealers you've
talked to
really want your business, or just consider having to special
order
a single
set of tires too much of a nuisance to be bothered with.

Just my opinion.

Re: "Desperately Seeking Shocks"

Thomas Isom

I mentioned on the VW_Eurovan group list that my '93 EV GL, which I
just bought about 10 days ago, has Monroe Magnum shocks on the front,
at least (haven't taken a look at the rears -- noticed the fronts
doing an oil change). They are olive green and quite beefy-looking
(large diameter), so they're probably the same ones "toymasters2002"
mentioned. They are very good, at least on my 5-cyl GL. They give
me a controlled ride and handling. They are much, much better than
your typical American OEM-type shock. I was surprised that Monroes
were that good, because when I had Monroe struts installed on a
Merkur XR4Ti I used to own they were so terrible I immediately went
back to the Pep Boys shop and told them they had to take them off
because they were no better than the worn out stock units. I had
some KYBs installed which were OK, but not great.

Anyway, I am a pretty picky car guy and I can vouch for the Monroes.
They may not be adequate for a heavy camper or Weekender, but they
work great on a 5-cyl GL.

One thing we all have to realize with the EV is that your are never
going to get the ride quality of a good car because in the front
you're sitting very close to the front wheels, so all of the bumps in
the road are felt, unlike if you were sitting closer to the center of
a car, where the vehicle can basically pivot around your seating
position as bumps are absorbed front and rear. Of course you're not
actually *sitting* on the front axle like you are on a pre-T4/EV VW
van . . . Anyway, if you want controlled, European-style handling on
your EV you certainly can't have an American land-barge feel. In the
EV, you are going to feel every bump in the road.

Re: 92-93 COMPATIBILITY

I have a 92. The coils are interchangeable, done that. The Fuel
injection system has some differences though, as does the timing
belt, water pump, and transmisson motor mount. Some early 92 models
do not use a serpentine belt. This means that the AC and Alternator
will not fit the 93s. So check out compatibilty before you buy any
of those parts.

Re: Which Hitch-Mounted Bike Rack is best for EVC?

Bill And Phyllis Davidson

I got a Bauer hitch-mounted bike rack but mine is for a 2" class 3 hitch.
It swings to the side with or without the bikes on and you can obtain an
attachment to add 2 bikes for up to a total of 4 bikes. It comes with a
lock that locks the rack to the hitch and also locks that lock the bikes to
the rack. It works great.

Do you use a hitch-mounted bike rack? Do you have to take the bikes
off to open the hatch of the Eurovan? If so, do you also have to
take the rack off? Which hitch-rack do you use, and would you
recommend it?

I just got a 1.25 inch, class 2 hitch installed and want to buy a
bike rack for it. I'm very curious to hear about how these kinds of
racks have worked with the Eurovan.

Thanks!!!

I'm in a similar bind... however, mine has just fallen off.
When I bought the van it was missing and the dealership ordered a
new part
and glued it on using the ultra sticky VW epoxy... however after a
week it
fell off... the epoxy on the inside nooks of the piece was still
wet. I
would have thought it would have set before a week went by and we
had hot
weather to boot.

I'm trying to remove the lock, but can't figure out how to get it
off...any suggestions?
As far as getting it off... why do you need to do that?
You'd probably have to use a heat gun and a stiff metal putty knife.

If this is for your Cabrio the harness is in the car. Look on the right side
of the trunk. Also look behind the existing radio and you will find the other
end of the cable.

To all of you 'lucky' guys putting new Bilstein's on your (nearly)
new EVC's;

If your old set is still good I might be interested in putting them
on my '92 EV with 190,000 kms on the originals. Let me know the
condition and km's on yours and how much you want for them. (The
cheaper the better, thanks!)

Enjoy the ride, boys and girls!

If its like the later years (2000 and on), its just a simple matter of removing the several visible screws and speaker. There are some screws hidden in behind the speaker. Now the trick is that the entire panel lifts straight up instead of the usual out and away from the door. If you attempt to pry out on what you think are the normal panel spring attachments, you'll end up breaking off the molded plastic hook which is part of the entire panel. VW is apparently the sole manufacturer who has deviated from this "standard" design.

Re: fog lights

<PRE>Bumper as in bumper cover/air dam... I don't know if the 2001 U.S. spec is
the same size, I would assume it is. In addition to buying the part and
having it installed it would also need to be painted to match the van. The
estimate here was around $1200 (including the fog lights and wiring)...

VW Van Recipes request

Larry Chase

Volks,

As I work on the Web Site for my upcoming trip, it occurred to me that I might need to prepare a meal or two while on the road for a year or more.

But I can only prepare two dishes, neither which I care for that much :)

Scouring the archives, I got 70+ hits for recipes.

Great ... starting point.

I'll sort through these and post the best.

But I bet there are still a bunch of great ones out there.

So Volks ..... please send your favorites if they aren't in the archives.

To quote one of the recipe postings "camping recipes you can make easily on a small, two-burner stove".

I'll put them on the website for all to reference. One nice neat, all in one place package.

As I come across new ones I'll post them and keep the collection growing.

Re: 02 sensor and EGR valve problems

Michael G. McCarthy

"High quality gasoline"? Is there any reason to thing you were using
something else? Consider the possibility they are blowing smoke.

They never did, so I went to another shop -- privately owned, not a
big dealership. They removed the EGR valve and cleaned soot that
was blocking its ports. This only cost $85.
Soot? I don't buy it. A properly running '98 will NOT create enough soot
to clog anything. If there IS soot, then something is wrong, and what did
your independent do to correct the soot problem?
They mentioned that using high quality gasoline was important. Since
that cleaning, it ran for about a year without any further trouble
(from that part, at least).

For the last six months, the yellow light has been on solid for
another reason, so if there has been any reccurence of the egr
trouble, I won't know about it.

(It so happens that I bought a dealer demo vehicle that has California
emissions equipment on it (I live in Wisconsin). There's this
secondary air pump that has failed, and to replace it is like $700.)

I have a 98 EV. At one point, when the yellow light came on, I went
to the local dealer. They told me I needed a new EGR valve, which
would cost something over $400.

Luckily for me, the dealer screwed up. They said that they would first
check their records to see if there might be a warranty coverage based
on another repair I'd had done recently. Since their computers were
down that morning, they were supposed to call me back later.

They never did, so I went to another shop -- privately owned, not a

was blocking its ports. This only cost $85.

Maybe yours could just be unclogged.

What about general longevity on the EGR valve? I was told the VW
emissions warrenty does not cover these parts, nor does the extended
warrenty I bought, so I might be out several hundred dollars (parts
alone cost over $500). Anyone else have this problem and find a
